The default for some home routers is nothing in the User ID field and
admin in the Password field.

Good luck!

Hi Steve,
Be aware that your Quadra 700 can accommodate quite a bit larger
internal or external hard drives than you are currently using.

There are lots of alternatives, but here's one that might do:
Pick up a larger hard drive core, like at least one Gigabyte. Put it
into your external hard drive case and get it working. Be sure to set
the SCSI ID number to something other than zero.

See if you can pick up a copy of Conflict Catcher 8. It has a neat
feature called something like System Merge, which really takes a lot of
the work out of installing a Clean new System Folder and then migrating
any needed third party files, like fonts, Control Panels, or
Extensions, from your old System Folder to the new System Folder. You
would install Conflict Catcher on your existing internal hard drive as
well as on the new Clean 7.5.3 or higher System Folder you put on the
new external hard drive folder.

Boot your system from the new external hard drive and run the System
Merge feature of Conflict Catcher to get all those important non-Apple
files moved over.

Then copy all the non-System files from the internal hard drive over to
the external hard drive. Voila, you have yourself everything you need
plus lots of spare hard drive space.

If you like, at that stage you could change the SCSI ID of the hard
drive in your external case to zero and pop it into the Quadra case,
replacing the old internal hard drive and making it so you can run
everything without the external case attached. You could get a second
new hard drive core, pop that into the external case, and now you would
have a second drive which you could use from time to time to house
backups of your main drive.

There are TONS of different strategies for doing backups, so this is by
no means the only way to go about things and maybe not even the best
for you. I'm sure a few other folks will have alternative suggestions.

Oh, one source to pickup both hard drives and Conflict Catcher would be
ebay. Conflict Catcher is no longer sold new as the company which
marketed it went out of business.

Good luck!!

Re: [q] Dead Quad 950

Could anyone tell me if a Quad 950 would go totally dead when the

I have certainly seen this phenomenon on other early Macs, like some LC
II or III models. In those cases, I could also still hear the hard
drive spinning up, but the monitor would stay absolutely black and
could easily cause one to think that the computer was dead. I think
this is because the PRAM battery also holds the Monitor Settings from
the Monitors Control Panel and, if they go, the computer doesn't know
how many colours to show and it just gives up.

I am pretty sure you can find the appropriate battery for your Quadra
at any Radio Shack store, although there may be cheaper places to buy
one if you have the time and patience to shop around.

Good luck!!
