[q] Web browsing on vintage macs

2005-11-19 Thread Robert Patterson

I thought I'd pass on a useful link to those of you browsing the web
on 68K Macs...

If you use iCab 2.9, you probably encounter a lot of errors or lock-ups
resulting from most modern web-pages which use resource-hogging technology
or plug-ins. So, it's refreshing to find sites which are still quite
useful on older Macs.

The regular Yahoo! sites don't take well to older browsers, but they also
have Pocket PC-friendly addresses that we can use successfully. Try:

http://wap.oa.yahoo.com

You can get the latest news, sports and information even if you don't have a
Yahoo! log-in, but if you do, you can even use Yahoo! web-mail!

Give it a try!

I would fully agree with James. I have noticed a certain arrogance
from certain list members, and this is disturbing. This is supposed to
be a FUN hobby, and preaching or getting up on soap-boxes is just wrong.

To All.

1. If someone sends a message in all caps then turn it into a teachable
moment
by telling the sender we don't use Typetype machines anymore(they only had
capital letters) and email procedure says all caps is SHOUTING.

2. We should operate under the assumption that the sender does not know
better rather than lazy or angry.

3. Also, if the message is not too long answer the question if possible.

4. Peace will be in the valley.

Re: [q] Quad inventory of uses

2005-01-07 Thread Robert Patterson

My Quadra 650 (OS 7.6.1) holds an important spot in my computer arsenal.
I use it for downloading email from the various LEM lists, and I also use it
for checking valid HTML code on a couple of websites I work on, using iCab
2.9.8 currently. This is with a 33.6Kbps dial-up connection. On occasion,
I use it to develop HyperCard stacks for keeping track of my CD and DVD
library. Also occasionally, I use it with Word 5.1a to write letters,
printing on the attached StyleWriter 1200. Nice!

Rob

Can we do a roll call of how quads are being used in different ways?
I have two and they are presently acting as bookends for some zip drives.

Re: Re Cables (part 2)

2003-03-09 Thread Robert Patterson

My reply follows quote.

(Don wrote:)
Which brings me back to one part of my original question...

  [snip!]
So...again I ask has anyone here ever done the splice on the normal
cable to complete the set up through the switch box...regardless if
that changes it from straight to crossover, or crossover to strait?
I 'presume' such a splicing would be easily done by reversing two
of the normal printer cable wires.

All I'd need is to know which two. If all else fails, I'll have
to get out a meter, and go at it sorta blind till I figure out which
ones are right.

Thanks for all the good feedback so far.
Don

Don,

Actually, 3 signals have to be cross-connected. And yes, I've done
this splice. :-)

If you look into the open end of a mini-DIN8 male plug (not the solder side)
the pin designation is as follows:

 6 7 8

3 4 5

 1 2

Here is the way a standard Mac printer cable is wired:

One endOther end

1 HSKo -- HSKi 2
2 HSKi -- HSKo 1
3 TxD- -- RxD- 5
4 Grnd --- Grnd 4
5 RxD- -- TxD- 3
6 TxD+ -- RxD+ 8
7 GPi --- Gpi 7
8 RxD+ -- TxD+ 6

As you can see (I hope! ASCII art was not one of my strong points :-)
pins 1, 3 and 6 are crossed to pins 2, 5 and 8 respectively.

Hope this helps!

Re: Cables

2003-03-07 Thread Robert Patterson

Macintosh printer cables are not wired straight-through, but are in fact
crossover cables. Hence, if used through a switchbox, the feed cable and
any of the output cables together would negate the crossover. I also had
to find a straight-through cable to use my switchbox with two printers.

Of course, this assumes that the switchbox is wired in a straight-through
configuration, and in my experience, most are.

Rob

I don't understand why your switchbox requires a crossover serial printer
cable. Are you absolutely sure of this requirement? It sounds like the exact
opposite of every other serial switchbox I've seen.

Re: Performa 636CD and StyleWriter II

2003-03-07 Thread Robert Patterson

Mac serial Printer cables use a mini-DIN8 connector, with 8 pins.

When Apple introduced the Geoport, they added a 9th pin, which supplies
power to the connected device. That 9th pin is not used for any printers,
as far as I know.

Rob

Greetings,

Newbie question. New Macintosh user. Stuff
you will know the answer to :)

Above represents, roughly, the serial port
on the back of my Macintosh Performa 636CD.
I notice that the third row of pins from
the top row are 4 in number. But the serial
cable I purchased for connecting a Macintosh
StyleWriter II has but three pins in that row.
Even so, the cable fits the serial port. Is
it routine that one pin is not used? Or?

Re: Cables

2003-03-07 Thread Robert Patterson

You are correct. A special straight-through cable to the switchbox, and
regular Mac printer cables from the box to each printer. That is what has
always worked in my experience.

Note that many switchboxes made for Macs INCLUDED this special cable, which
unfortunately was often not marked as a special cable, which caused a great
deal of confusion from the outset. :-(

Rob

Macintosh printer cables are not wired straight-through, but are in fact

to find a straight-through cable to use my switchbox with two printers.

Of course, this assumes that the switchbox is wired in a straight-through
configuration, and in my experience, most are.

So that would mean aquiring one straight through cable and attaching it
to the printer (if the box is set up to allow several computers and one
printer); the rest should be regular printer cables. Right?
