Re: [q] USB port in a 637CD Performa?

Hi

I've never had a Performa 637CD to play with, but I have messed about
with a few 630s,
replacing the slide out logic boards with those from 5500/6500 Power
PCs. If I remember
correctly, this'll give you access to a PCI slot but you'd also need
a one slot riser to rotate

the card through ninety degrees.

The downside is that your 72 pin ram won't work - you need 5v 168 pin
sticks. To speed

things up more, you could also fit in a level 2 cache card.

I only ever fitted ethernet cards, so can't say for a fact if a USB
card would work properly.

This must have been two or three years ago and might be a cheaper
proposition today.

Using OS9 Helper, it was possible to get 9.2.2 running quite happily
on the upgraded 630s.

The experts on the list may be aware of restrictions due to power
supplies and so on with

your particular machine.

Hope this helps.

I've installed a USB PCI card in my 6500 and it works like a champ.
Tranfering this mobo into a 630 series machine shouldn't be a big deal.

  Hello Listers,

Is is possible to swap the above motherboards? I
 will
slide in the LC580 board to my dead 575 board,
 change

problem, has anybody on the list been to this
situation? IM a novice, need ur help. Thanks.

They are both LC520 form factor so I'm guessing it
 will be a clean swap.
Change the cable and the drive. A IDE cable can be
 purchased from
anywhere. Rather cheaper than SCSI or pull one
 from a old pc.

The 580 was introduced on the 3 of april 1995, the
 same day the 575 was
  discontinued.

The 580 motherboard is 4cm longer than the 575
 motherboard, and if I´m not
mistaken the edge-connector of the 580 is different
 too (more like the 5200
and the later). So to do the swap you need to change
 the internal connector
harness and move it 4cm deeper inside the 575.

Yeah, unfortunately the 550 and 575 can swap boards,
but that's about it. The 580 however can use most of
the motherboards after it; 6xx, 5xxx and 6xxx Power
Macs. Ironically, the 575 has a MUCH better screen
than the 580. Check out:

This actually covers all the important questions about
all these computers.

 All the best,

I go tech slumming at the local GOODWILLS where old
macs can be had for between $7.00 and $10.00. I've
picked up 3 of the 6xx machines over the last few
months, and doing a bit of online snuffling, here's
the possibilities of this beast.

The true beauty of this computer is that it came about
during that odd cheapskate period Apple went through
and has the delightful slide out motherboard. Even
better, it can support most of the Power PC mobos
along these lines. One of my machines is running at
100 MHz, while one of the others is running a PowerMac
6500/225 motherboard without a hitch. I find this a
good compromise as this case is nice and compact, in
contrast to the MASSIVE 6500 tower. You could use a
54xx/64xx motherboard, but it has power issues and
needs a voltage regulater installed (Not all that
complicated). Those motherboards go fairly cheaply on
eBay so it's a worthwhile upgrade.
