The PRAM holds all the settings for the computer that it needs to boot, such as what SCSI device it is to boot from by default and what screen size to use. The PRAM in the LC475 is a fickle beast. It requires a good battery to even show a video signal at startup. Try this little dodge (at your own risk of course): Turn on the LC475 Wait for the hard disk to spin up as normal Once the hard disk is FULLY spun up and initialised turn the machine off and on in rapid succession. If it boots it is definitely the PRAM. If not, pull out the battery and try the above again If that all fails unplug all power and the battery and leave it to stand for a while. -- Mark Benson AIM - SilValleyPirate Visit FlatPackMacs online: http://fpm.gotdns.com Visit my Homepage: http://homepage.mac.com/markbenson Vintage Macs List Nanny Never send a human to do a machine's job. -The Matrix -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Performa 475 startup
I have a performa 475 that has a nice boot chime, but won't look at any disk--HD, ext.SCSI, floppy. I did the best I could to find quadra info (eg LEMs quadra list) and I replaced the battery and it came back to life. After many PRAM clearings, a disk clearing and reinstallation, it worked for a week or two and stopped: and started doing the same thing. I repeated my prior actions but no results. It chimes the way it should, the hard drive does its 4 second startup routine and then everything goes quiet but the fan. A blue screen, no disk noise no nothing. All three disks are startup disks and worked when I got it to work. There's no CUDA switch on this machine (that I know of) Any Ideas? Also, any ideas on good places for general reference? -- -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... All of these people with boot problems, sounds like battery is a big issue here. What exactly DOES the battery do anyway besides keep the clock running?
