Subject: I've got a Quadra 605 Coming

I've been toying with the idea of getting an LC 475 for awhile just to
see what an '040 can do. The only machines I've ever had with a 68040
were a 190 and a 190cs. So I posted a swap list on the swap list and have
 one coming.

I've got a few questions about this machine, and I'm sure more will come
as I start to use it. I may have posted some of these on the Vintage Mac
list, and if I have I apologize for the cross posting (it was awhile ago).

First, I saw on LEM that this machine can use 64M SIMMs, but only certain
types. Does anyone out there have a 64M SIMM in a 605 or 475? If so, is
it stable? If so, do you recall where you got it?

Second, I saw the VRAM can be upped to 1 meg from 512k. The only monitor
I have at the moment (not counting the 17 on our G4) is the 14 Basic
Color Monitor (?). I'm assuming there's no need to up the VRAM until I
get a better monitor. While on the monitor note, do regular PC SVGA
monitors support the 832 x 624ish resolution this machine can make, or is
 that just a Mac resolution?

Third, what OS would you guys gals recommend? I've got a 16M SIMM I can
put in it, bringing it to 20M of physical RAM, until I decide to buy a
bigger SIMM for it. I know I've got 7.1, 7.5.3, 7.6.1, and 8.1, but know
nothing as far as which one would be best on a Quadra.

Fourth I read the article (linked from LEM) about over clocking this
machine. Has anyone here tried it? If so, was there a noticable
difference? I saw that you had to install the resistors on a switch, so
you could install OS 7.5. Does that apply to later OS's, or does it even
work with later OSs? Does the PDS still work if you overclock it?
Ethernet will almost definitely be in this machine.

Fifth, does changing out the LC040 to a full 040 provide much of a boost?
Does it produce any compatibility problems?

Sixth, are ther any other PDS cards that would be fun to play with for
this machine. The only ones I'm aware of are ethernet, the Apple 2e card,
and I think I saw a video card for the LC's on eBay once. LEM says there
are PPC upgrade cards for this machine, but that's probably not something
I can see myself doing. Are there any LC cards that don't work in this
machine? I'm guessing an '040 upgrade card (for an LCIII) probably
 wouldn't work, but anything else?

 More to come I'm sure,

 J White

Of course, this varies wildly depending on the graphics card and monitor, and
with the wide range of such setups on the PC side, there's no way anyone can

I have to agree with pickle for the most part.

I do enjoy one thing that 7.5.x has: Apple's built-in
hidden finder options.

These include selecting file(s) and keying Cmd-Del to
send them to the trash and Cmd-R an alias to reveal
its original file. Cmd-dragging to create an alias and
diabling finder window zoom rectangles are also nice.

If anyone knows a hack to get some or all of these
options in 7.1, please do share! :)

 2. The VRAM upgrade to 1M isn't going to be real important with just a
 14 or 15 monitor, as I don't think I'll ever want to do 1024 X 768 on
 such a small monitor.

 3. Got lots of opinions on the OS, one was to try them all and see for
myself which I like best, and probably will try a few.

 J White

Actually, you need the 2 512k VRAM SIMMs in order to see thousands of
colors on a 14 monitor (640 x 480), or a 15 (at 832 x 624). This may or
may not be of importance to you, but just to let you know.

I have run both 7.1 7.5.5 (actually 7.5.3, but I've never gone all the
way up, because I've heard that the 7.5.5 upgrade only adds stuff of
relevance to PPCs -- I've lost data on disks under 7.5.5 on other 68k
Macs.) I think 7.5.3 is actually just a bit faster, if you slim it down
(as recommended on gamba's sitte elsewhere. A prime candidate, IMHO, for
slimming is Apple Menu Options. Also Open Transport, if you can avoid it.
You won't want to avoid it if the 605 is on the Net, tho'.

Have fun!

My opinion as some of you may know is for 7.5.5, as it feels just as fast
as 7.1 to me anyway, but has more features and is compatible with more
newer software.

You won't really know which you prefer until you try both I guess, but
for me personall all of my 040 desktops currently run 7.5.5 (my 040
powerbooks all run 7.1.1 however, smaller footprint for the smaller hard
drives).

Third, what OS would you guys gals recommend? I've got a 16M SIMM I can

Re: I've got a Quadra 605 Coming

2003-02-18 Thread Dan Palka
Probably either 7.1 or 8.1. If you're up for a little work upgrading and
tweaking bits, 7.1 is nice because it has a very low memory footprint.
Overclocked to 33mhz (see below) with 64 megs of RAM, 8.1 works quite well
really. I'm in the camp that doesn't see a lot of reason for running 7.5.5
and 7.6.1 is only marginal. There's not a lot that won't run on 7.1 that
will on 7.5.5, 7.6.1, or 8.1.

Again in my experience I have to disrecommend OS 8.1.

Even on my 50mhz upgraded Quadra with 136mb of RAM and a 10,000rpm hard
drive MacOS 8.1 is sluggish to me.

On the other hand, 64 megs of RAM and a 33mhz '040 would mostly negate the
advantages 7.1 has over 7.5.5, which is a somewhat smaller memory footprint
and a slight speed advantage. Might be worth just using 7.5.5 since it
saves you a good bit of trouble :)

Definetly. If you have lots of RAM maybe thats the key to using system
7.5.5. 32mb aught to be enough to run the OS and some Apps with virtual
memory turned off.

Of course MY Quadra doesnt even know what Virtual Memory is :)

Yeah, it's just a pain in the arse as far as doing non-Apple //e stuff. You
can always reboot between sessions, but I'd rather dedicate an LC or LC II to
the task, since they're limited to 10 MB RAM anyway, and all the Apple //e
processing is handled by the card, so it wouldn't be any slower.
