Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-07 Thread J Sand

Now I'm confused about who is confused about what started this confusion.

Though it might sound like a joke, it isn't.

The lack of relevant quotes have left me wondering what is going on with the
"40 AV and VHS" thread and what the answer was to the question.

You must have made a typo when you typed "SPAV handles

You got it right, Rob, and I got it wrong. The SPRO does 24-bit.

I assumed that the Spigot Pro AV was in the market
before the Spigot Power AV due to the fact that the
840av was in the market before the Nubus Power Mac AV's.
But I didn't buy either one when they were new... I
assumed that the Spigot Power AV (Mark Benson mentioned
it by name) was what Radius called the Spigot Pro AV
once they added the cable.

SPAV led SPRO to the market, and by the time the SPRO appeared for about
$1000 it was soon abandoned by Radius which went through a corporate
reorg. They left the SPAV and the SPRO on our doorsteps, like abandoned
babies.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-04 Thread Rob
No, I was never saying that you didn't have a cable, I just thought that the
cable was the part that made yours a Power versus my Pro.

I was thinking that the Spigot Power AV was the same as a Spigot Pro AV,
except that it came with the cable. I looked back through my notes and
realized that the Power does 16 bit output while the Pro does 24 bit output,
so there is more of a difference than the cable.

I thought the Power in the name referred to the Power Macs, not simply
'power'... So, if I'm understanding correctly now, the Power could be used
on the 68K AV's as well as the Power Mac AV's, and so could the Pro!! You
just need a cable to use them in the Power Macs, that not all boards came
with...

I'm not sure if I was the only one confused, but I'm not anymore. I don't
think...

Not imaging it. Of course the SPAV works in an 8100 and, yes, there is
a cable for making the AV connection on a PPC in lieu of the in line,
direct connection for the Quadras.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-04 Thread Rob
You must have made a typo when you typed "SPAV handles 8-bit color and the
SPAV handles 24-bit color". My Spigot Pro AV does 24 bit color and will work
in either a 68K AV or a PPC AV. Like I mentioned in an earlier posting, the
only difference that the manual mentions is the ribbon cable needed on the
PMacs. On the 68K AV's the cable is not required because of the AV extension
on the Nubus slot.

I assumed that the Spigot Pro AV was in the market before the Spigot Power
AV due to the fact that the 840av was in the market before the Nubus Power
Mac AV's. But I didn't buy either one when they were new... I assumed that
the Spigot Power AV (Mark Benson mentioned it by name) was what Radius
called the Spigot Pro AV once they added the cable.

I'm pretty sure my older Video Spigot is only 8 bit, but then again, I've
never used it...

Yes, it has the little extended part next to the Nubus connector. I was
planning on "downgrading" the OS to 7.5 or 7.6 just to see if it runs a
little more consistently. One of these days... It's actually sitting on the
desk, but I got side tracked by a BeOS install on a StarMax and a couple of
G3 upgrades (6100 & 7500) that I wanted to play with... The pile never seems
to get any smaller!

The SpigotPower AV's were the later ones sold for the
PowerMacs. The only difference between the two, AFAIK,
is the little ribbon cable required on the PMacs.

The SPAV preceded the SPRO to market in actuality. And by the time the
SPRO appeared, it was soon regarded as obsolete compared to what the
competition had on the market -- poorer quality full-screen video, not
compatible with the then-new Macs on the market and such. However, it's
sorta fun to tinker with still.

Notwithstanding the little ribbon cable, the BIG DIFFERENCE is that the
SPAV handles 8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color. That would
make the SPRO superior to the SPAV, yes?

My setup will record 640x480 NTSC at 30fps, but I just
have problems always getting output from Spigot all the
time.

The older apps might work better for you, but QuickTime is a mighty
equalizer too. I would expect your capture card and its output to be
universally compatible.

Mine is a SpigotPro AV, I'm looking at the original box right now... The
SpigotPower AV's were the later ones sold for the PowerMacs. The only
difference between the two, AFAIK, is the little ribbon cable required on
the PMacs.

My setup will record 640x480 NTSC at 30fps, but I just have problems always
getting output from Spigot all the time. I have a fairly fast AV drive on
the stock controller. The output problems seem to be related to what apps I
use, but I'll have to play with it some more to know for sure.

I've also got a Nubus Video Spigot, but I've never taken the time to get it
going... It was going to go into a IIci or a Quadra 650 someday, time
permitting.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-02 Thread Michael Emery
Rob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

I've got a SpigotProAV. This indeed works with the older
Quicktime versions available, but the later versions
(5-6?) complain about the lack of a CODEC to view the
file. On a machine with QT4 (I think), it wouldn't show
the video, but the audio was intact...

I have never even tried QT5 or 6 with the SPRO. There might just be some
breakage between those two latest versions and the hardware/software
designed for QT2, my guess.

Are you using Spigot AV Extension v1.1? That's what you need.

I use Fusion Recorder now. It seems to be OK, I was just
wondering if there was something else available.

Radius also made an app called VideoFusion for sale. It is one of many
apps that can possible record video. I happen to have several potential
apps archived, but it's not likely that they'll ever see any use by me.

I was quite happy to continue running OS 8.1 on this
machine, but I have thought recently that running 7.5 or
7.6 might be a little better from a performance
standpoint.

One would think so. But what I've seen is that 7.5.3 erupts in stalls
while using some of this capture software. 8.1 is much more stable and
user-friendly, I've found. Yet, by going with 8.1, I can't use some of
the older software that sorta runs in 7.5.x and breaks in 8.1. :-(

I should try 7.1 someday.

I have all three known versions of the Spigot PAV (It's Power AV not
Pro AV - I have one in my 840av that was new boxed :P ) extension. The
software is pretty minimal there is a SpigotPAV extension (about 125k)

What you do need if you seriously want to record big video (like full

Thanks for the reply

I use Fusion Recorder now. It seems to be OK, I was just wondering if there
was something else available.

The last time I tried to reformat and partition the 4GB drive, the OS
complained that the drive itself was too large. On OS 8.1, there were no
problems. I'll have to try it again.

2003-01-01 Thread Michael Emery
Happy New Years, Rob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

What are the best apps for digitizing video?

Fusion Recorder is a good one. I believe there is a download link at the
AV Quadra site: . If
that fails, let me know and I'll send you the stuff.

I'm running 8.1 [...] The last time I tried to run an
older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI drive, being
too large. Is there an easy way around this?

You can reformat your drive into smaller-sized partitions. This might be
a bit inconvenient for you right now, after you already have stuff set up
for your convenience on one 4GB partition.

Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any
good utilities to convert the video to a newer video
codec? Most newer apps (including QuickTime) don't want
to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format.

What kind of Spigot card do you use? I have a SPRO (Spigot Pro AV) that
works fine from 7.1 through 8.1. It requires an extension to make it work
well with QuickTime.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figured since it
was already being discussed...

Answering your query is a pleasant diversion from eating New Year's food.
;-)

I hope this helps you.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-01 Thread Rob
I've got an 840av with a Video Spigot AV. I'm running 8.1, but I have
problems reliably getting the video to come out of the Spigot's outputs. It
seems to change depending on what app I'm using, then needs a reboot to make
it work properly again. Would changing to 7.5.5 help this?

The last time I tried to run an older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI
drive, being too large. Is there an easy way around this?

What are the best apps for digitizing video? I only have a couple that work
with the Spigot. I've been trying to use Premiere 4, but it seems to give me
the most grief with Spigot output. Any suggestions?

Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any good utilities to
convert the video to a newer video codec? Most newer apps (including
Quicktime) don't want to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figured since it was already being
discussed...

Thanks,
Rob

Only if the VCR or camcorder has an S video jack already on it. There are
devices that convert composite video to S and vice-versa, but most of these
are cheap and do a very poor conversion.

If your VCR or camcorder only has RCA jacks, would there be an advantage to
using an "s-video" adapter or cable (allowing you to use the s-video port
on the computer)?

Yes QuickTime 4 is a must. I don't like the player that comes with
QuickTime 4 though. If you can find the player that came with QuickTime 2,
then you 1: don't have to pay for and register quicktime 4 and 2: the
quicktime 2 player runs faster on 68k macs, and if you have the QuickTime 4
extensions plays all compatible video.

>upgrade to OS 8.1

This however I must disagree with. I edit video on my 8600/200 with
7.5.5 all the time. And I know how 8.1 impacts Quadra performance. So I
would recommend sticking ith 7.5.5.

>Get a large SCSI-disk

Yes this would prove quite useful, but not only large, but FAST. My
Quadra has a 4.5gb 10,007rpm Seagate hard drive. Something like that would
benefit you greatly.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2002-12-31 Thread Andreas Anjou
Hi

I bought a used Quadra 840AV with lots of installed software from someone
clearing out his basement. Unfortunately I've never worked with a Mac
before. It didn't come with any books of any sorts and I'm wondering if any
of you have any experience using this Mac for editing, if there's any info
on line, what programs I should be using and a few hints.
I plan to use a vcr to play the video tapes. The Mac has 2 RCA type jacks, I
believe they are, at the back where I could hook it up. Does this make
sense?

Hi

I myself is in much the same situation, and this is some of my
thoughts about it:

Quicktime 4 pro (is availiable for 68 k) for capturing video
upgrade to OS 8.1
Get a large SCSI-disk

I´ve tried some video capturing with the software provided in 7.6.1
(don´t know the name in english, sorry) and the streams are rather
good actually.

The 2 RCA-jacks are for video, thats right, but for composite video,
you´ll get better quality if you use the "ADB type" jacks which are
inline with the other connectors (monitor, sound, AAUI...) Called
"s-video" also marked with "in" and "out" in a small VCR-camera
symbol. Feel free to email me offlist if you have more quastions!

And at last I wish you a Happy New Year!

Many websites with animation (either full "animated" sites, or things like
rollovers) use Flash. It's reasonably compact, but you do need a plugin for
your browser to display it properly.
