I only had one, "fedora-23-dvm". I deleted it and recreated it, but the DispVM

[qubes-users] mounting a qemu-img'd file error?

2016-10-03 Thread gaikokujinkyofusho
I converted a vdi file over to a raw file which seemed to go fine but mounting
it is not going so well. mount seems to be having problems with the file sys. I
have tried auto but no luck, I tried manually specifying but no luck. It was
whonix so I assumed it was ext3 or 4 (or 2, tried em all) but no luck.
I have tried specifying offset points (2480 here) and just "loop" etc... nada

fdisk -l tells me:
Disk whonix.raw: 4 GiB, 4294967296 bytes, 8388608 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x3d6b07dc

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
whonix.raw1 2048 8388607 8386560 4G 83 Linux

if it works in a baremetal debian, it should work in a debian based sys-usb.

[qubes-users] Re: how many passphrases and passwords do you need?

2016-10-03 Thread jkitt
it's a stupid mess. People don't deal with it.

It would be nice if there was a specification, other than a shitty vulnerable
USB, that would allow the plugging in of a key that stored a GPG private key.
That way even your grandma could automagically sign an authentication token.
Such a key-fob would have it's own hardware - to receive requests and possibly
basic PIN authentication; or even fingerprint - if it was completely isolated
(as in never leaves the device); the authentication module would be on the
device itself and not through the OS. The idea is that the device itself
functions like a removable TPM chip.

Although I personally don't trust hardware that stores fingerprint data - it is
feasible for this method to be implemented rather securely and openly (as in
libre)

In the meantime, I intend soon to make a firefox addon or plugin that stores a
salt and domain in the firefox sync database. combine that with a standard
manually inputted password to create an HMAC; which can be then be encoded with
ASCII values from a lookup table. The result would be a completely random
password for every domain. To change the generated pass you would change the
salt. The salt is stored in firefox sync but your password is not.

I won't get to implement this until I finish UNI in a couple of years. Until
then I'm stuck with what I have.

[qubes-users] Qubes R32 screen blanking except active window

2016-10-03 Thread Gaijin
I'm encountering seemingly random screen blanking while I'm using Qubes
3.2 (updated from a fresh install of rc3). The screen will blank and
momentarily show the logon. Yet if I move the mouse or use the keyboard
only the active window will show. Changing desktops, clicking on other
windows, or moving the active window around will redraw the rest of the
screen.

I never had this issue on this hardware with R3 or R3.1. I'm running
dual monitors off an nVidia GTX 560 Ti. The screensaver is set to blank
the screen and require a login. That's the screen that keeps popping up.
Sometimes it gets so frequent that I need to reboot the system and the
problem will go away for a while.

Hello Andrew,

Merci for sharing this artikel.

Here the link to some similar "security mesh" the PEP foil to protect some
hardware.

Protecting Electronic Products

https://www.aisec.fraunhofer.de/de/fields-of-expertise/product-protection/pep-protecting-electronic-products.html

This should also be prevent, in a smart setup, that hardware-implantates can
included on the shipping (most hardware have no secure delivering service).

Perhaps PEP will be introduced in some way for QubesOS hardware.

Kind Regards

[qubes-users] Random MAC addresses working in Network Manager 1.4.2

2016-10-03 Thread Chris Laprise

Network Manager 1.4.2 has been testing very well for me the last few days...

This new version appears to randomize MAC addresses properly, and the
feature set has evolved to the point where the randomization process is
managed in a more holistic way. For example, you can specify a
cloned-mac-address type of 'stable', and this will generate a random MAC
(for a given access point) and store it for use with the same AP in the
future. Setting it to 'random' will generate a random MAC each time it
connects, instead of remembering the address. You can also specify
bitmasks for randomization.

When disconnected, the MAC is changed regularly at a set interval.
Randomizing also works for ethernet, and is handled entirely by NM just
like it is now for wifi.

The network-manager 1.4.2 package is in Debian unstable repo and its not
hard to install in Debian stretch/9. I do recommend removing your old NM
connection profiles after upgrading, as randomization (while connected)
didn't work for me until I started with fresh connection settings
(created a new netvm). After installing, edit
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf in the template and add lines like:

   [device-scan]
   wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=yes

   [connection]
   wifi.cloned-mac-address=random

Then stop the template and restart the netvm.

More details here:

2016-10-03 Thread nishiwaka46
It isn't a configuration problem but a driver related one. I made the mistake
to set up this mouse with a minimum DPI value that is too high. Anyway it has
by default a high DPI value that does not fit a browsing / workstation profile.
I bought it for gaming purpose, but I stopped playing video games.

Problem is driver from manufacturer to Linux users is really bad as ofc they
don't sell it for that usage. So unless someone would know how to properly burn
a udf USB iso, I guess I'll have to reinstall baremetal Debian and take an
afternoon to compile sources and make it work, once again...

[qubes-users] how many passphrases and passwords do you need?

2016-10-03 Thread pixel fairy
passphrase: long, like 15+ words. used for encryption, does not change often
password: short, like 3-5 words. used for login/access, changes more often

passphrases per client device (laptop etc)
bios/firmware
disk encryption

other passphrases
backups
keepass

passwords per client device
login/screen saver

other passwords
anything you want to access without your laptop

so if you have two laptops, two backup disks, and 1 online account that you
keep backups on, you'll need to remember 8 passphrases and 3 passwords. that
2xbios, 2xdisk, 2xbackupdisk, 1online-backupimage, 1keepass database and
2xlogin, 1account for online backups, since you might be restoring when thats
the only thing left. even if you use the same one for all backups, your still
looking at 6 passphrases. this is a simplified example compared to most of us.

how do you deal with this? how do you train users to deal with this?

[qubes-users] Re: Detach a USB mic from sys-usb into dom0

2016-10-03 Thread neilhardley
OK, here is the solution. I solved it myself.

You install "pavucontrol" in the internal VM.

Then ,if you look at it, you will see that the USB mic is actually detected
automatically.

So in fact, no need to detach anything, or disable any USB qube.

You just simply install "pavucontrol" inside the App VM.

The USB mic doesn't show up in dom0's pavucontrol

But it does show up in pavucontrol of the internal VM

Solved.

Using "Pulseaudio Volume Control" - available in System Tools" or from
xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin (which is included in default fresh
installation).

I don't think so.

There is grouping setting in "Window Buttons" preferences, but it groups
by AppVM + application, not only AppVM.

I appreciate the positive sentiment of your message, Drew, but this
sentence stood out and is worthy of note. If you're posting to a
discussion group where you want help, you should make it as *easy as
possible* for someone to answer your question. It is a *good* thing to
provide information to people so that they "[do] not need to think or
anything"!

You should not demand or expect that people go out of their way to
figure out what you mean, when it is simpler for you to explain it as
part of your enquiry. Don't make your questions to discussion groups
intentionally unclear, Drew!

In short, always err on the side of "too much information" rather than
too little.

Cheers,

Dave.
