[qubes-users] Re: how many passphrases and passwords do you need?
it's a stupid mess. People don't deal with it. It would be nice if there was a specification, other than a shitty vulnerable USB, that would allow the plugging in of a key that stored a GPG private key. That way even your grandma could automagically sign an authentication token. Such a key-fob would have it's own hardware - to receive requests and possibly basic PIN authentication; or even fingerprint - if it was completely isolated (as in never leaves the device); the authentication module would be on the device itself and not through the OS. The idea is that the device itself functions like a removable TPM chip. Although I personally don't trust hardware that stores fingerprint data - it is feasible for this method to be implemented rather securely and openly (as in libre) In the meantime, I intend soon to make a firefox addon or plugin that stores a salt and domain in the firefox sync database. combine that with a standard manually inputted password to create an HMAC; which can be then be encoded with ASCII values from a lookup table. The result would be a completely random password for every domain. To change the generated pass you would change the salt. The salt is stored in firefox sync but your password is not. I won't get to implement this until I finish UNI in a couple of years. Until then I'm stuck with what I have. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Qubes R32 screen blanking except active window
I'm encountering seemingly random screen blanking while I'm using Qubes 3.2 (updated from a fresh install of rc3). The screen will blank and momentarily show the logon. Yet if I move the mouse or use the keyboard only the active window will show. Changing desktops, clicking on other windows, or moving the active window around will redraw the rest of the screen. I never had this issue on this hardware with R3 or R3.1. I'm running dual monitors off an nVidia GTX 560 Ti. The screensaver is set to blank the screen and require a login. That's the screen that keeps popping up. Sometimes it gets so frequent that I need to reboot the system and the problem will go away for a while. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Random MAC addresses working in Network Manager 1.4.2
Network Manager 1.4.2 has been testing very well for me the last few days... This new version appears to randomize MAC addresses properly, and the feature set has evolved to the point where the randomization process is managed in a more holistic way. For example, you can specify a cloned-mac-address type of 'stable', and this will generate a random MAC (for a given access point) and store it for use with the same AP in the future. Setting it to 'random' will generate a random MAC each time it connects, instead of remembering the address. You can also specify bitmasks for randomization. When disconnected, the MAC is changed regularly at a set interval. Randomizing also works for ethernet, and is handled entirely by NM just like it is now for wifi. The network-manager 1.4.2 package is in Debian unstable repo and its not hard to install in Debian stretch/9. I do recommend removing your old NM connection profiles after upgrading, as randomization (while connected) didn't work for me until I started with fresh connection settings (created a new netvm). After installing, edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf in the template and add lines like: [device-scan] wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=yes [connection] wifi.cloned-mac-address=random Then stop the template and restart the netvm. More details here: https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-networkmanager-1-4-0/ https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/stable/NetworkManager.conf.html man nm-settings https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/938 Chris -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. OK, here is the solution. I solved it myself. You install "pavucontrol" in the internal VM. Then ,if you look at it, you will see that the USB mic is actually detected automatically. So in fact, no need to detach anything, or disable any USB qube. You just simply install "pavucontrol" inside the App VM. If you're posting to a discussion group where you want help, you should make it as *easy as possible* for someone to answer your question. It is a *good* thing to provide information to people so that they "[do] not need to think or anything"! You should not demand or expect that people go out of their way to figure out what you mean, when it is simpler for you to explain it as part of your enquiry. Don't make your questions to discussion groups intentionally unclear, Drew! In short, always err on the side of "too much information" rather than too little.
