The Tor Control Port thing is actually a more common problem than I thought,
but I might have to edit the torrc file and change the port connection.
https://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/12650/could-not-connect-to-tor-control-port

Otherwise, I might have to reinstall the Tor Browser Bundle or delete any
possible old file configurations for Tor.

[qubes-users] using non-default dispvms in 4.0

2017-09-28 Thread Joshua Thayer
Hi, I'm trying to use non-default disposable VMs in Qubes 4.0 and
running in to problems. My dom0 and AppVM templates are up to date with
the testing repos as of today.

My understanding from reading documentation and various mailing list
threads is that in Qubes 4.0 it should be possible to specify a template
to use when using disposable VMs using a syntax like:

    $ qvm-open-in-vm '$dispvm:kitten-dvm' ./cute-kitten.jpg

Assuming a VM named `kitten-dvm` exists on your system, and it has its
`template_for_dispvms` pref set to True via `qvm-prefs`, and the
appropriate policy is set in `/etc/qubes-rpc/policy/qubes.OpenInVM`...
in this case:

    $anyvm '$dispvm:kitten-dvm' allow

However, I consistently get "Request refused" when running the example
`qvm-open-in-vm` command above even when using the target_vmname
`$dispvm:fedora-25-dvm`.

Any help understanding how to use the new-style dispvm specification
would be appreciated!

Hi Joh,

I found quite a few bits and pieces of VMs lying around when looking at
how to recover VMs from my previous install. This might take a while,
but you can run the following commands in a root terminal session on dom0:

# cd /

# grep -r * 2>/dev/null

No guarantees, and be careful what you remove/edit, but it's worth a shot.

Re: [qubes-users] How to check total storage used by VM?

Hello Jerry,

> Now if I alotted in the vm itself 125gb and it shows 53gb then

storage space is thin provisioned as such your App-VMs will grow over time.
You can check the available space with

df -h

Please keep in mind that you have several layers:

Physical Harddrive / SSD
Partitions
LUKS Encryption
LVM

LVM consists of:
LVM PV Physical Volumes (command: pvdisplay)
LVM VG Volume Groups (command: vgdisplay)
LVM LV Logical Volumes (command: lvdisplay)

This offers lots of flexibility but also raises complexity.
You could have only 10 GB physical free space on you drive, while a virtual
machine with a thin provisioned drive could fool you that there is plenty free
space available.

Thank you for the tip, I've watched some i3 videos and it looks good.
I'll give it a try. Just for info, the installation of i3 is possible via

sudo qubes-dom0-update i3 i3-settings-qubes

Thank you cooloutac

-Is this a vm
It happens in Templates and VMs.

-Is this a vm, if so do we really care if systemd is running in it?
The problem is when i enable SELINUX VMs/templates doesn't "boot" or fail to
start.
If I disable SELINUX, the templates/VMs start whithout problems and systemd is
activated.

-You sure thats selinux?
Yes i'm pretty sure, it's exactly the same config that i had in fedora24.
In dom0
qvm-prefs -s fedora-25 kernelopts "nopat security=selinux selinux=1"
and in VMs/Templats
/etc/selinux/config

SELINUX=enforcing
SELINUXTYPE=targeted

Default selinux config

-what does sestatus say?
I can't execute anything in template/VMs
in dom0:
qvm-run fedora-25 --nogui -pass-io -u root "sestatus"
Error(fedora-25): Domain 'fedora-25':qreexec not connected

-When googling this error seems people have same issue when running docker.
And you have to set seccomp to unconfined

Yes, i've read it, but i don't know how disable seccomp and the consequences...

Could you make me a big favour and try to activate SELINUX?

Thank you very much

Best regards

Probably only useful in the template vm. But still not sure how beneficial it
would be was my point though. Its probably not compatible with qubes, sounds
like it breaks qrexec, maybe not worth the headache man.

Try running SELinux in permissive mode then use the SELinux audit2allow
to turn the permission violations into new permit rules. Those permit
rules will allow the system to boot normally once applied to the system
policy. This process may need to be repeated.

I used to use this script back when I was using tcsh on a stock Fedora
system, but it would be trivial to change to bash or just use the
command line:

#!/bin/tcsh
echo
# find the avc entries for the application in the log file
grep "$argv[1]" /var/log/audit/audit.log > "my$argv[1].out"

# pass those entries to audit to allow
cat "my$argv[1].out" | audit2allow -M "my$argv[1]"

# display the generated policy so you can learn what its doing
cat "my$argv[1].te"

echo

# Just output to stdout the command needed to commit the new policy,
# this is for cut and paste command execution

echo semodule -i my$argv[1].pp
echo

Basically you give the script a search string and it grep locates all
avc permission violations containing that application-name/error-message
and creates a policy file to fix those specific problems, and then it
echos the command needed to actually fix it to the console. If you agree
with those permissions displayed you simply copy and paste that command
back into the command line and press enter. Keep the *.te,*.pp files for
any future upgrades should you need to repeat this on another system.

If you were running in permissive mode nothing will fail but the system
will still log those avc violations. Once you have run the *.te file to
update the policy, on the next boot those avc messages should be
resolved, if so, turn on the se enforcement (targeted mode) and try
booting again. Rinse and repeat as necessary until your system boots
properly, then you can focus on the user application side of things.
Targeted mode is best for the user, as it denies any system services
from running that you didn't give permission to run but does not block
the user from getting their work done.

As for Xen itself, there is also the Flask architecture (SELinux equiv)
built into

[qubes-users] Use another Window Manager (awesome) with Qubes OS

Hello,

I've recently seen the window manager "awesome" in action which I haven't heard
of before.I would like to give it a try on my Qubes 3.2 installation.

https://awesomewm.org/

Has someone succesfully setup awesome under Qubes (which is basically a fedora)
and has maybe some tips how to do so?
It seems there are two options:
1) install awesome via dnf/repositories
2) build a rpm package from the GIT sources
 http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/rpms/awesome.git/tree/

I've also never changed my default window manager in Qubes ...
Any guidance would be helpfull, also an information if it can be done at all.

You could run the following command in your dom0:
du -sh /var/lib/qubes/appvms/* /var/lib/qubes/vm-templates/*
/var/lib/qubes/servicevms/*

This will show the summarized space of all VM directories.

Thanks for the information, I'll try that!

I just found something new, that's very odd:

* If I connect a second monitor via VGA, then fullscreen mode works on
both my laptop's monitor, as well as on the second monitor without any
problems

* If I connect a second monitor via HDMI, then fullscreen mode works
only on the second monitor

* If I don't connect a second monitor, fullscreen mode does not work
correctly

* Fullscreen terminals from dom0 work correctly, no matter the setup

I'm using the following commands to activate the second monitor for VGA:

xrandr --output DP2 --mode 1680x1050_60.00 --above eDP1

The following for HDMI:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --above eDP1

To deactivate multiple desktops:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --off

xrandr --output DP2 --off

Everytime I try to run it, it hangs on install and will not load whatsoever. I
decided to run Linux Mint HVM yet that wont connect even tho I have the same
setup I got Kali Linux VM to work on.

I need to see how much room I have on my ssd preferrably by vm. Seems I created

no, that's wrong. Qubes supports multiple displays just fine, it's just based
on an 1-2 year old version of Fedora, so it supports whatever that supports.

so newer graphic cards might cause problems, or certain old ones too.

IMHO there is no real connection between RAM used by the OS and apps,
a and the RAM ins your VGA. (VRAM)

VRAM is used for:
- - game (3D) data rendering, which is out of scope in case of Qubes
(maybe if you using Compiz with fancy desktop effects)

- - display rendering.

The later is still need more and more VRAM because of the bigger and
bigger common resolutions Like:
800x600 -> 1024x768 -> 1920x1080 -> 2560x1080 -> 4K -> 8K -> etc.

So you still need more and more VRAM to render all your pixels in your
screens. These can be multiplied if you start using multi-monitor setups
.

But these needs are not growing as fast as your conventional RAM needs.
I'm using 3xHD screens, and the 512Mb VRAM used by the integrated VGA
is still enough for that, while my OS has 16Gb RAM.

[qubes-users] Re: Adding a second monitor fails

2017-09-28 Thread Coracle
I'm getting the message here and elsewhere that Qubes OS doesn't yet support
extended desktops or multiple monitors.

I want to build a navigation system for my boat based on Qubes OS. Modern nav
systems control the autopilot and display large amounts of information on
multiple monitors. Qubes OS offers not only a high level of security but also
seems to offer an opportunity to run incompatible applications simultaneously.
Not sure if this will mean anything to anyone here but I would like to run
TimeZero + Navionics vector charts on Windows in one Qube simultaneously with
OpenCPN + UKHO raster charts on Linux in a second Qube).

Does anyone know whether Qube OS is eventually going to support multiple
monitors?
