Thank you for the advice. I managed to recover 1 private image, the rest was
salvageable, for whatever reason. (Even VMs that hadn't been started for days,
so there must've been another issue than the one I mentioned; because if not,
the only other conclusion I see is that btrfs is bizarrely fragile.)

Re: [qubes-users] UEFI boot problem

2018-10-20 Thread Stephan Marwedel

Thanks for the hint.

The commands I used to restore the entry were

efibootmgr -v -c -u -L Qubes -l /EFI/qubes/xen.efi -d /dev/sda1 -p 1

efibootmgr -o 0,1

Now I can boot Qubes using the UEFI boot manager again.

from a boot manager. Qubes 4.0 runs very well on this machine.

Since the T470p is now supported by the Linux Firmware Vendor Service
I did the last BIOS update from Archlinux using fwupdmgr. Everything
went smoothly. Unfortunately, after the update I was no longer able
to boot Qubes because the UEFI boot configuration for the second
drive was somehow deleted.

How can one recover the UEFI boot environment of Qubes 4.0? I tried
using the Qubes installer but there is no shell access to run
grub-install or efibootmgr. Can I do it from the Archlinux drive or a
Fedora boot media?

Yes, Fedora boot media should work. Try searching this list for
"efibootmgr"- should get the magic string for it in there somewhere.

Re: [qubes-users] Additional USB controllers for a laptop expresscard to PCI-slots

2018-10-20 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

Franz:

What do you think, will something like this be able to add more usb
controllers to a laptop?

https://www.integrate-computer.de/Exsys-EX-1015-ExpressCard-Bus-to-4-x-PCI-Slot-compact-Expansion-Box
This is reported to be linux compatible.

The idea is to add a USB keyboard to a laptop using a PCI USB controller,
perhaps using another slot for an audio card or whatever.

Having a separate keyboard will also allow to add an external monitor,
making home use more comfortable for eye strain now that e-ink monitors are
getting available.

But may Qubes architecture be able to assign these additional cards to
specific VMs even if they are connected by an Expresscard?

If that adapter registers as a PCIe-PCI bridge and the PCI cards as
endpoints, it might work. Might depend on your laptop hardware and
firmware too. Probably only way to know is to try it.

There is no web browser installed in dom0. Do you maybe mean one of your
AppVMs, like "work" or "personal"? Where exactly are you hitting Help?
If you have no data you need to keep, you could delete the AppVM and
recreate it.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't use btrfs myself, for just such reasons,
although other users find it works for them. I hope you didnt lose too
much.
If you still have the cloned (or original) disk then you could consider
other recovery options depending on how valuable your data was.

I LOVE the disp feature and use it fairly often for random browsing,
but, I miss a few addons. I managed to add them to my template (which I
am think might be bad op/sec juju) but even then, when a new addon comes
out the browser updates so I have to update the addon manually in the
template which is a PITA that is quickly becoming not worth it.

Yeah, that's the downside of dispVMs.

My workflow for updating my profile is:

1- every now and then I start a dedicated appVM where my "master" firefox
profile/folder lives, in order to update addons, tweak prefs, ...

2- I then copy the folder to the dispVM's *dvm* template (not the dvm
template's template). I assume you're on R4.0 - IIRC for R3.2 you'd have to
update the template itself.

It seems to be pretty much what you did though. It doesn't take too much
time but then I update my profile every month or so - maybe your addons
require more frequent updates.

You could try to automatize the process with a script in dom0 that would
start the VMs, `qvm-run` commands, copy files, ...

Another way would be to skip updating the dvm template (step 2 above) and
instead copy the updated profile to one of your VMs that is always started
(or to dom0, provided you don't open/read any of these files). You could
then write a qubes extension [1] that automatically sync the dispVM profile
with the "master" one when a dispVM starts.

[1] https://groups.google.com/d/msg/qubes-users/JtLBUB-YfM0/y2izgbZDBAAJ

What's the advantage of doing this, as opposed to using the appVM in 1
itself as template for the disposableVMs?

Because I'm certain that the only thing I'm copying is the .mozilla
folder. Now, if I start the dvm template itself it's difficult to know
if something else has changed when things are being updated.
Also, the dedicated appVM can be firewalled to allow only mozilla/addons
sites. You could do the same with the dvm template but that would
involve tweaking the firewall each time you update the VM and revert it
to its original settings afterwards.

If the points above are not a concern, using the appVM template is
indeed more straightforward.

Re: [qubes-users] Updates to all recommends Vms on Qubes 4.0

2018-10-20 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

Black Beard:

Hey Community,

I'm an absolute novice regarding Linux, especially Qubes. I have already
understood many things very well and I really like the OS.

Now I would like to update some virtual machines, including Fedora26, Whonix
etc because they are outdated.

I have already read and followed the instructions for updating Fedora 26 to 27
and 27 to 28. Unfortunately, I always get an error message when updating (I do
not have it in my head because I'm at work).

According to a forum, I should change the identity at Tor to successfully
install the upgrade. My system tells me that no gate has been installed ??!

At Whonix I get an error message from 13 to 14 to update.

How can I update Fedora and all other Vms?

Of course I am very happy about your feedbacks.

regards and many thx to all of you

I find it easiest to install the new version of the template instead of
upgrading. For Fedora 28 that would be "sudo qubes-dom0-update
qubes-template-fedora-28", then change your AppVMs and qubes-prefs to
point to it instead of fedora 26. You can do the same with Whonix 14,
check the instructions on their website.

You can attach it to your email here if it is small enough, or upload to
an image host and link. I think I see what you mean, though. If you hit
Help on dom0 applications, it wants to open a web browser, but there
isn't one. Due to the way Qubes is set up, those Help links are not
going to work. Instead, try doing an internet search for XFCE and the
application you need help on.

Re: [qubes-users] How to correctly install AMD graphic driver on Qubes?

2018-10-20 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

Thank you for your reply. So much to learn in this new environment
That certainly is a nice thing. Can I understand it as Qubes having a pre-baked
driver that covers AMD Radeon cards? that the graphic card is ready to be used
at full capacity if/when needed?

Right. Technically, Qubes is using Fedora in dom0, so it's using the
video driver that comes with Fedora's Linux kernel. It can be used in a
full capacity as much as Qubes needs of it which is 2D acceleration.

Usually when installing a new OS (any OS) one also has to install drivers,
graphic driver to get the full benefits of its devices, I brought that way of
thinking along with me to Qubes. I’m happy if that is not the case here. I also
had some lagging when watching 720p video files, I attributed that to lack of
proper graphic driver. Haven’t had the chance to test more yet.

There was an old bug that limited playback to 24fps, but shouldn't be
the case any more.

A side question: How does the Virtual Machines make use of the graphic card? I
read that for heavy works like large photo editing or video editing, gaming,
its preferable to add a second card and dedicate it to that particular VM where
the work takes place.

IIUC, VMs draw to an X Windows buffer that dom0 takes and converts to
graphics driver calls that actually paint the screen. There is some
overhead with this, but Qubes tries to isolate hardware from software
for security. It works fine for most day to day use like watching videos
etc., but that's why the dedicated card for heavy/3D usage.

Re: [qubes-users] How to correctly install AMD graphic driver on Qubes?

2018-10-20 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

entiosis via qubes-users:

Is there a guide (step by step, the more detailed the better) similar to the
Nvidia driver installation guide found in Qubes user documentation for AMD
graphic driver installation? I was not able find any helpful threads on Qubes
reddit, Qubes users google group, nor in Qubes documentation. Is there someone
who could help me with tips and info (easy, specific, understandable to a
newbie) on how to go about installing AMD GPU driver?

For the sake of argument, I choose to trust AMD’s driver to be safe in order to
make use of the GPU.

The driver should be installed in dom0 (Nvidia guide explains), I attempted at
downloading the AMD driver tar.xz file and move it from my VM to dom0 (with the
idea of unpacking and do normal install by following the guide on AMD homepage)
with the command described in Qubes documentation; “Copy from (and to) dom0”.
Here I face the first problem; how to get the syntax correctly? I’m
unsuccessful in doing so. What am I doing wrong with the syntax and what other
considerations/approaches/preparations should I make in order to get the file
to dom0? If at all this is the right way to do it.

Example: dom0 username: Iceland, VM name: personal
[Iceland@dom0 ~] $ qvm-run --pass-io personal ‘cat
/home/user/Documents/amdgpu-pro-18.30-641594.tar.xz’ >
/home/Iceland/amdgpu-pro-18.30-641594.tar.xz

System OS: Qubes R4.0, Processor Ryzen 7 1700x, GPU Asus Radeon RX 580

I’m stuck, lost and in need of help. I really want to use - and learn how to
use - Qubes on my desktop computer. I’m determined to make Qubes my home.
Please help me fly :-)

The nice thing about AMD Radeons is that you shouldn't have to do
anything special to use them- just install Qubes. That's why there's no
special documentation. Is there a reason you are trying to install it
manually?
