Just to clarify, opting to set up all VMs manually let me through to the Qubes
Manager so I could use Dom0. In doing so, I obviously only had template VMs
available (and Dom0).

The suggestions from https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/2213,
specifically running in Dom0 :-
sudo saltutil.clear_cache
sudo qubesctl saltutil.sync_all refresh=true
sudo qubesctl state.highstate

or combinations of top.enable (since all were listed in top.disabled)

... didn't seem to have any effect in generating the default sys-net and
sys-firewall qubes.

I've just gone back to 3.1 for now.

I can confirm that Debian and Whonix packages aren't my problem as the boot
still failed without them.

This leaves me with either a faulty hard drive or a bug in the 3.1 version of
Qubes. To test this I am going to create a live USB of the normal 3.1 version
of Qubes by installing Qubes from one flashdrive to another, then live booting
it.

Nope. This other USB failed as well. Same thing happens. If Qubes can run via
Live USB, why is it having problems booting via my hard drive? It shouldn't be
faulty, windows worked fine on it a few days ago, before I nuked it to Hong
Kong...

I've come up with 3 possibilities, feel free to add to this you guys:

1) Although I don't see why zero filling my drive would ruin it, maybe the hard
drive got corrupted somehow and I have to re-format it
2) I've noticed Qubes on Live USB didn't have the add-ons for Debian8 and
Whonix templates. I would like to have these, but I'm running an install
without them to see if its my problem.
3) Qubes Live USB is in alpha and may slightly differ from the normal version.
Its possible the regular install contains a bug that the live install doesn't
have. If this is the case, it should be filed and taken up with the developers.
But I cant say this is the cause yet

So, interestingly enough I tried making a live USB and Qubes has booted up
perfectly on the laptop... I also used a different USB than the one I installed

my laptop with this other USB and see if I have any luck. Hopefully my problem

It seems that both reloading i3 config and putting the system to sleep and
resuming will make the icons disappear.
They are not taking space in the tray, they are just not visible, but the
processes are running in the vms.

[qubes-users] Re: Sys-usb + boot loader + keyfile on external drive?

2016-08-09 Thread 0mn1cub3
Thank you both for the insightful information. Taking into consideration all
these things, which setup would you most recommend? Or does it strictly depend
on usage scenarios of my machine?

1. bootloader is on a portable USB with keyfile. Qubes does not use a dedicated
USB qube.

2. bootloader is on the same device as Qubes with keyfile on a portable USB.
Qubes uses a dedicated USB qube.

Thinking it over, option 2 sounds the most wise as I can simply set a strong
password at system boot to prevent any access to bios settings/boot options.
Option 2 is most attractive due to the fact that it makes installing burner
wi-fi USBs to the USB VM much easier (I am not sure just how safe it is to
install a burner wi-fi to dom0 and then re-route all internet traffic through
the net VM).

Yes, it should be possible (the way Andrew described), but keep in mind
it will be a little inconvenient:
 - updates of kernel/xen will require you to somehow transfer updated
files there, are /boot will inaccessible to dom0
 - it's better to disconnect that usb drive as soon as system boots, to
not expose it to potentially compromised sys-usb

The later can be eased by using Anti Evil Maid - where startup scripts
explicitly will ask you to remove the USB stick.

And that was my mistake: I'm patching up the Lenovo P-Series design
fault by dynamically launching additional USB VMs whenever another PCI

someone is attaching an USB interface to the USB-C connectors). And the

Yeah, found that.
I have it working from the minimal template, but am missing the network up/down

When the qubes-vpn-handler.sh calls

it doesn't seem to work..

I left the template as empty as possible, downloading only

openvpn

When I try to call the
su - -c ork-idle' user
line in from terminal, it asks me for a password.
I am definitely behind the vpn though, just without any dialog boxes. Is it
because I am missing gnome? Any way to send a dialog out without having any
gui? I am looking to save on RAM and HDD space, so don't want to install
anything I do not have to..

Have you tried updating template? Or even just start it and call

Appmenus format have changed slightly and those entries needs to be

Try downloading lvm2 package first (same as others in step 3).

Ops, sorry Marek I did a too small boot partition and I have to do it
always when I install a kernel update.

I'm using Xfce since Qubes 3.0 so I don't mind deleting all KDE,
however I don't find kactivimanagerd package.

Anyway now I'm only getting this error:

file /usr/sbin/blkdeactivate from install of
device-mapper-1.02.109-2.fc23.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
lvm2-2.02.106-1.fc20.x86_64

And if I try to remove it I get:
