 1. Are you sure that you're entering the correct passphrase?

 2. Where exactly are you seeing this error?

 3. Is there more to it, or is that the whole error?

 4. In your system, what is /dev/sda2 (e.g., root partition)?

So, if I understand correctly, your goal is to decrypt your previous
LUKS-encrypted Qubes installation so that you can recover files from
it, right?

When you attempt to boot this installation normally, what happens? The
same LUKS error as above?

Have you tried accessing the disk from the command-line, e.g., using a
Live OS? (You can also just use the Qubes installer for this.) Or is
that what you were trying to do when you encountered the LUKS error
above?

Yes, but they use different keyrings, so if you update your key in one
keyring (by removing the passphrase from it), it will not necessarily
be updated in the other one.

[qubes-users] Install the same template with other name

2016-12-16 Thread Eva Star
How to install the same fedora-24 template to the system, but with other
new (without deletion of the current primary fedora-24)

I want fresh fedora-24 template without any modifications to make my own
fedora-24-custom. Want to start from fresh template.

Thanks

[qubes-users] Qubes 3.2 Install hangs in GRUB on Mac OS X 10.10 - USB Install

2016-12-16 Thread 'Sam Johnson' via qubes-users
I have installed Qubes 3.2 on a USB flash drive as follows:

sudo dd if=Qubes-R3.2-x86_64.iso of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m

When rebooting I hold down Alt and enter the Qubes installation menu. Any
selected option starts processing but quickly ends and returns me to the menu;
no installation is made.

This page seems to be relevant:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/uefi-troubleshooting/

But I have no way of actually using vi to edit the file mentioned in the
section of 3.2

(I did find an article with a work around to Ctrl-x not working on some
systems: bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1253637 )

Suggestions with any step of this process are welcome and appreciated.

I would advice to have a relook at all the screenshots for a clear insight.

My point is quite simple that I need to do is to recover my data , documents ,
scripts in my installed os qube os r3.0 which was installed few months back. I
tried to reinstall with the same media of r3.0, so that I can reset or lookout
for reset of passphrase or somehow unlock the passphrase.

Both are installed in the Fedora 24 template but if I understand correctly, the
qubes gpg wrapper now defaults to gpg2.

Ah, that was my mistake/commit. I apologize, I did not see this

The worst part, really, is that the only place in the man pages where
random vs. stable is documented is in the section that specifies that
`cloned-mac-address` is deprecated!?! It would be really nice if this
were also doc'd in the `keyfile` or `ifcfg` pages. So now the Qubes docs
have to point to a page that is going to recreate this situation over
again.

Relevant NetworkManager doc pages:

https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings.html
https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings-keyfile.html
https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings-ifcfg-rh.html

Yeah, I initially made the same mistake. :) Per what Thomas said in the
linked NM thread, the current NM documentation is confusing.

In short you need to:

- Change qubes repo to `stretch-testing`
- update and dist-upgrade your template

If you run into problems, all the answers should be in that thread I linked.

Ah, that was my mistake/commit. I apologize, I did not see this
documented before. Thank you for helping me to realize this confusing
situation.

The worst part, really, is that the only place in the man pages where
random vs. stable is documented is in the section that specifies that
`cloned-mac-address` is deprecated!?! It would be really nice if this
were also doc'd in the `keyfile` or `ifcfg` pages. So now the Qubes docs
have to point to a page that is going to recreate this situation over
again.

Relevant NetworkManager doc pages:

https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings.html
https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings-keyfile.html
https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/1.4/nm-settings-ifcfg-rh.html

Re: [qubes-users] Re: [qubes-devel] Re: Announcement: Qubes OS Begins Commercialization and Community Funding Efforts

2016-12-16 Thread J. Eppler
Hello Leeteqxv,

if I understood you correct, what your clientele want's to have is constant
improvements for Qubes OS. They don't want to compile or test things.

This is a subscription based model, where people pay the Qubes OS team for
their ongoing work rather than for an existing product.

Furthermore, I agree with you "memberships-based support services (premium
communities) is a good business model for" Qubes OS.

However, I think that testing new features and introducing new features can be
done together with the open source community and Qubes OS could offer a LTS
version for money. LTS version could focus on guaranteeing backports and fixes
for specific LTS version over a period of 3 or more years, whereas the
community support will only be offered for a year or till the next version of
Qubes OS appears.

I think the Qubes OS team should focus on getting paid for their ongoing work
rather than Qubes OS as a product and the only way to do this is to offer
monthly or yearly subscriptions for customers and additionally support
memberships for IT professionals (consultants, IT departments etc.).

Agree with that.
On the license side also a mixed scheme may be interesting. For example
there is an obvious need of some development directed to the very special
enterprise needs. This additional enterprise development may be kept
closed-source for a limited time, perhaps 5 years rather than the
international 50 years of copyright law. During this limited time this
additional software may be available under a non-disclosure agreement for
the licensee to check it or even compile it.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: [qubes-devel] Re: Announcement: Qubes OS Begins Commercialization and Community Funding Efforts

2016-12-16 Thread Leeteqxv

On 15/12/16 23:46, je wrote:

> I do not believe that developing a commercial operating system
based on an

> open source foundation will pay off on a long run.

Is there a specific reason you think it will not? Just curious.

1. Selling a license provides a one time payment. Even if you are able
to sell 100_000 licenses for 40 you would earn
4_000_000, but the same companies will not buy a license the year
after that. Which means no constant income for the long run.

Most companies will stick with one version of the product till they
really have a reason to upgrade.
Because, the costs for upgrading are actually higher than the costs of
the license and upgrades involve the risk of causing
disruption (problems during the upgrade, which blocks employees from
getting their work done. Which again means I loose money).

With other words Qubes OS will be stuck with one version for years.

2. The simple question is how can you sell a product which contains
mostly GPL licensed code (Xen, Linux Kernel)

which everybody can download and compile for free?

RHEL sells support subscriptions. They offer support (10 years
backporting, customer support etc.) and most important they offer a
platform for other business software.
The work RedHat constantly invests in their RHEL can not be easily
replicated and that is the reason why CentOS is not a competitor.

3. Security is a process and not a product. As an enterprise customer
I want to have constant updates and upgrades, security bulletins and
other security information.
I want to know if DirtyCOW, hardbleed or other security flaws affect
my business if I use Qubes OS or not?

Furthermore, I believe that the Qubes OS team and ITL does not
understand what Qubes OS could offer on an enterprise level.

--
I am working with IT strategy myself. Enterprise needs are clearly
completely different from SMB, etc., so in that sense we are talking
about two entirely different strategies and support models. I think
Qubes should pursue both, but with two distinctly different teams in
charge, with the suitable understanding of each area.

As the whole industry (and society at large) continues to mature into
various ways of readiiness for Open-Source things, I am quite sure that
we will see a growing market among SMB's that are willing to pay for
support and related peace-of-mind aspects even if it is possible to
compile everything oneself. It is worth paying to "delegate" both such
manual work and to avoid keeping up on the related competence race.

A license is one thing, perhaps even limited in time, but an
accompanying support agreement is yet another. Both are needed, IMO.

There is also a middle ground here - Take for example me:
I would like to offer entry-level services to clients, who all will pay
the license + pay for my services. In turn, I want to be a
professional-level client of Qubes support, so that I can get their
backup when there is something I run into which I cannot answer or solve
properly for my entry-level clientele. So I would be willing to pay a
professional support membership of some sorts.

I strongly believe memberships-based support services (premium
communities) is a good business model for this, atop of whatever
licensing scheme one may have.

I use launchers as well, and you can also set up new panels (like say at
the bottom of the screen or on a second screen that auto-hides) if
there's not enough space.

Another option is to install Whisker Menu (
https://gottcode.org/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/ ) which gives you an
application menu that you can search (which can come in handy). I have
that one installed to the far right of my panel so my set up is to have
a bunch of most-used application launchers sorted by color to the left
of the panel next to the standard application menu, and then the Whisker
Menu launcher to the far right next to the logout button for the times
when I need to launch something whose name I know but don't want to dig
through the main application menu to find it (there are many Nautilus
launchers, lol). Best of both worlds and keeps my panel clean.

To install in dom0:

sudo qubes-dom0-update xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin

It's just the one plugin, no other dependencies.

It looks like you are installing Qubes 3.1. Why not use the latest
version (which is Qubes 3.2) and let the installer use its default
settings - manual partitioning during Qubes installation is a bit tricky
(and somewhat bugged), better use the default automated way.

You may have hard times finding more help if you're not going with the

So, you have a socket here instead of symlink.

It isn't a command, it should be a socket. But apparently it doesn't
exist. Check status of systemd unit providing it:

systemctl status systemd-journcald-dev-log.socket

You may want to remove /dev/log and restart above unit (sudo systemctl
restart systemd-journcald-dev-log.socket).

I can confirm that a Qubes 3.2 can boot on a Lenovo T560, however it
requires the kernel4.8 present in the qubes-dom0-unstable repository.

Without this kernel, the installer, or an already installed system will
reboot.

It is however possible to install the system on an external disk and
update the kernel from the unstable repository. The hard drive with the
updated system will then properly boot if used on the Lenovo T560.

If you already removed RPM, you can use qvm-remove --just-db. It will
probably complain that some VM still use it. Normally it should block
package removal, but there is a bug in rpm which result in not aborting.
It is already fixed in rpm-4.13.0:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-secpack/blob/master/QSBs/qsb-012-2014.txt
But Fedora 23 (which is used in dom0) still have 4.13.0-rc1

There is already fix in Fedora testing repository:
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2016-0906f64ec8

You are not getting a "wrong passphrase" message, but more of a system
or disk error.

Fortunately, because there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you can "reset" the
passphrase without completely destroying and recreating your encrypted
container (otherwise, what would be the purpose of encrypting it) ?

You may need to tell us more about your setup. Try to type [Esc] and
enter your passphrase in text mode, so you may see more detailed error

1. Are you sure that you're entering the correct passphrase?

Yes

2. Where exactly are you seeing this error?

During booting of Qubes R 3.0 OS

3. Is there more to it, or is that the whole error?

GUI , its the whole error

4. In your system, what is /dev/sda2 (e.g., root partition)?

Yes its one partition holding /root

--

So I tried to see if a reinstallation can happen.
During custom installation in GUI mode tried custom disk partitioning , gave
the original passphrase which failed with a error as given.

---

I have the boot phase of Qubes OS (disk passphrase failure snapshots), which
returns to the # prompt.
The boot process entered in to emergency mode
The command console posted two red failed & two yellow DEPEND status

Failed - Failed to start cryptography setup for luks-(hexacode log string)
See 'systemctl statys systemd-cryptsetup@luks\xedcf..service' for details
Depend - Dependency failed for Encrypted Volume

I do not want to come across rude but that's not how I see it.   I was using
passphrase fine over several releases and it just stop working for a reason I
have yet to find out why.

Removing the password is not a fix it is a kludge or work around.   A fix is
getting it back to its previous working state with password use intact.

If passphrase use is so seeming temperamental that you have to offer this
kludge, it should be said do not use!

When you say "the manual partitioning step," are you referring to this

If not, to what are you referring? (The installer itself should not
require any manual partitioning.)

You're taking that passage out of context. If you read it in context,
it's clear that "optional" means optional from a *security* standpoint.

You're also ignoring the part that I quoted for you previously. Here
it is again:

"You may experience trouble when attempting to use a PGP key with a
passphrase along with Split-GPG and Enigmail. If you do, you may need
to remove the passphrase from your (sub)key(s) in order to get
Split-GPG working correctly. As mentioned above, we do not believe PGP
key passphrases to be significant from a security perspective."

What this means for you:

You're experiencing trouble when attempting to use a PGP key with a
passphrase along with Split-GPG and Enigmail, so you may need to
remove the passphrase from your (sub)key(s) in order to get Split-GPG
working correctly.

No, but a good alternative is to use Xfce4 "Launchers," which can be
added to any panel from the right-click menu.

That sounds like a false dichotomy. If you look at the context of this
conversation, we're talking about the rate at which dom0 is updated to
newer upstream distro releases, which is typically an incremental UX
and hardware support improvement, not an all-or-nothing ("usable" vs.
"unusable") matter.

The user experience or even hardware support is an important one.  If people
can't use it, Qubes is doing to languish in some obscurity,   should more
developers be brought on?

I know that is a matter of money or someone being generous with time but
funding should be a possible route (ccing Michael Carbone) but I am sure hard
work to gain or even applying for some like Google Summer of Code.

This is disappointing to hear.    Removing the password sounds like a kludge
than a fix to something that had been working okay.

I understand the model does not technically need a password but it is something
I want (rightly or rongly) and it was working okay since R3.0 which to me
indicates that it can work and just something broke.

I do and see that it is optional which should mean it works. From the page you
say:

If it is not supposed to work  or is not supported it should be said  "do not
use passphrase with key" instead of saying "is optional" as this lead people to
understand that while not needed it works.

[qubes-users] How to completely remove a template ?

2016-12-16 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Hello,

I had upgraded my fedora-23 template to fedora-24 by cloning it per the
documentation, then moved all my VMs to using the new one.

Then I removed (dnf remove) the fedora-23 package. Still it shows up in
the "Qubes VM manager", and the option "Remove VM" is greyed out.

I have then removed all the fedora-23 folders under /var/lib/qubes ,
still I cannot get rid of the entry in the VM manager.*

Any clue ?

TIA, kind regards.

[qubes-users] Kali TemplateVM terminal etc. do not open

Hi @ all,

I made a clone of my debian-8 TemplateVM, renamed it and replaced the
apt-sources with the kali-ones. After that I installed some kali- paket-groups.

Everything was fine until last week. After some updates I could start the
TemplateVM but wasn't able to start/run any programm

For example opening a Gnome terminal does not work.

In case someone here has the solution I am very interested, but giving me a
hint, where and how to debug will make me happy too ;)

thx and regards
