[qubes-users] Issues after switching to pvgrub2 following Wiki instructions and using Template fedora-23
After switching to pvgrub2 and distro kernel within VM I'm seeing alerts from time to time about dmroot crashing (something like 'sorry, dmroot seems to have crashed'). Also to install kernel-devel I had to use allowerasing to install it as package 1000:4.4.31-11.pvops.qubes was blocking it. Wasn't sure what to do here. Now I get constant Update alerts for the template VM to replace the kernel-devel I installed. Not sure if this is related (can't see why, unless an important kernel module is built on boot by Qubes/) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. I just kill those, then > reboot. > (Reposting my comments on #1581 and #1826.) FWIW, I've been using simple shutdown and reboot scripts to work around this issue (I think since I first started using Qubes). Here's an example: ``` #!/bin/bash qvm-shutdown --wait --all \ - --exclude=sys-net \ - --exclude=sys-firewall \ - --exclude=sys-usb \ - --exclude=sys-whonix \ - --exclude=sys-vpn \ - --exclude=sys-etc \ qvm-shutdown --wait --all sleep 3 shutdown now ``` Works every time. The idea is to exclude all service VMs from the first pass of qvm-shutdown so that it doesn't jam up (#1826), so if you use VPN VMs, exclude those too. (This works for me even if there are more than 5 VMs still running after the first pass.) If you're really in a hurry, you can use substitute qvm-kill for sys-usb and sys-net, as Foppe suggested. - -- Andrew David Wong (Axon) Community Manager, Qubes OS https://www.qubes-os.org -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iQIcBAEBCgAGBQJYZd2GAAoJENtN07w5UDAwJfcP/i1Te9M0+2yHs0g2JzmpTnel xYolg5seZLIa8mVe/cgyMKh4HDpTDUzFQUAOXb74RaCNz3v0BM0RDkZWoEB+XkzY u0nGnuuJxKMaj4jQCcZGmUspG0M2aArwmedjyCuaIqcNNNiNu/O7jNcAWpplbsRi 6m2j7tjYOgVWnJBvPcpNxbmxjxyPDnGALr2NxSCvWICVCVe/vuo5NzVwJZTVxiTH F1OxRCxRyPP2RztpgCIsWdUAonnrEhEm8zcsGsZkc89y7YI91sA9R5T4LeEEU6d/ 8KnQWjG7Azx61QdSpnBPlbq61QZVA63pCSB5z2ZvkqXxCSxDdsmOZ0We1QmoKg61 FjJwwuBlvqbDrDS/LavB4/QcIF4n2TLCxlt2Eekm2mvoC/v6oIpsow9UIT4njcwF 78JsDJiVbvpBCZI6OvfH0OdD98mjgjvfkFP4Gz4eNRPc1JzHea52VeVLLQMmp5FC DuF+4+nR4MAi4tmYb9deWxQ65D8bMYb0iF0pl4/FmOqovvGdu5iTZY+XLQN4Ohl/ iQk+gJFP+XQzLjpxfUIZbfUuP/XioPCWR5Xgsjg/IiIHxd8ZfIsFp8dTp9w3lxfT V04I1Vimk1H1vqiCDCKXbjr+2C3URlPQZW8etqggF9BHAwyWz4JgdHOMj0bMCzDl /9/s7ZKkx9fzV0KsPjwq =Shf4 -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Dell Latitude E4300, no video with X or ethernet after install
Trying to install R3.2 on my laptop, but after starting X, there's no video. I know this laptop is on the HCL as not working, but as Fedora 23 (kernel 4.2, 4.4 and 4.8) and Ubuntu 16.04.1 (kernel 4.4) have working graphics, there shouldn't be any reason why Qubes won't work. I've tried doing a text install so that I can try to get graphics working properly after install, but once installed, I have no ethernet interface (was working fine in the installer). Driver (e1000e) is loaded, but no interface or errors in dmesg. I've also tried updating the kernel to 4.8.14-100, which had the same result. Can anyone think of anything else I could try? [qubes-users] botched 3.1 -> 3.2 upgrade: reset dom0 password
hello list, i have taken a R3.1 system installed from the ISO and attempted to upgrade it to R3.2 by following the instructions from the docs ( https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/upgrade-to-r3.2/ ), but i have encountered an unusually irritating problem in the process: after getting to step 7 of the dom0 upgrade, the machine was rebooted and i cannot log into dom0 using the password that worked fine with R3.1. i am 100% certain that this is not a PEBCAK error and that my previously working password for dom0 is no longer working. that said, this is typically an easy enough problem to fix on most *nix systems: drop to single user mode during boot and reset the password for root or whatever user. i have searched the qubes-users archives, found no advice on how to do this and had no luck trying this myself. i have used the install ISO to boot into "rescue mode", manually mounted the LUKS volume and attempted to reset the password to no avail. it would appear that the passwd installed in dom0 does not support the -R option, nor does passwd work properly inside a chroot, e.g. mount / filesystem on /mnt, run 'chroot /mnt' and run 'chroot '. if there is a trick to interrupting the qubes boot process to drop into single user mode, i would greatly appreciate someone sharing that information. it seems the issue is that this must occur between unlocking the LUKS volume and arriving at the password prompt for dom0. regards, jake -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Original Message Subject: [qubes-users] How to set file association in disposable VMs? Local Time: December 29, 2016 7:48 PM UTC Time: December 29, 2016 11:48 AM From: gree...@gmail.com To: qubes-users I have configured Nautilus in an AppVM to open PDF files with Okular, and I've then done the same configuration (as user "user") in the TemplateVM that the disposable VMs are also based on. However, when I choose "Open in disposable VM" from that reconfigured AppVM, even though the dispvm savefile is updated before launching the dispvm, it still uses the default PDF viewer instead of Okular. Throwing more vCPUs and RAM at it hasn't made a big difference so far, but I'm moving my system to a way more powerful system the next couple of days, hope that will make a difference. Can anybody please confirm that it is indeed possible to have a lag-free Windows experience under QubesOS? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Possible to get usable Win7 gui?
Currently my Windows 7 StandaloneVM feels a bit sluggish. Moving windows (no phun intended) is a pain. Is it possible to have a Windows VM without any lag, or is this just a part of the deal with Qubes OS? What tweaks should I do to get my Windows VM as responsive as possible? I have no problems with lag in dom0 or any of the Linux VMs. My display is 2560x1440, maybe a large display is part of my problem? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group.
