Have you read?

Id also recommend testing usb drive on another computer to see if it works
there.

I agree that without some confidence with the command line and the terminal
you definitely need some luck to be able to use Qubes long term. However
luck depends also on the laptop you have. Some are more compatible than
others. I selected my laptop just to be able to run Qubes reliably.

Of course it is possible to use it also with less compatible ones, but then
you need more time and experience to fix the problems.

first, with as root, they mean you should type "sudo" in front of all the
commands (without the quotation marks) in the dom0 command line.
second, it depends on your threat level, as it is described: during boot, dom0
is shortly exposed to all the usb controllers, so if one where to be able to
plug in a malicous usb drive during the early boot period, he might be able to
takeover your system, this can be prevented by blacklisting all usb controllers
in dom0. deciding whether this might be a threat in your situation is up to you
and depends entirely on your threat level.

If you have attached the device, it should appear as /dev/xvdi, with
partitions shown as /dev/xvdi1 /dev/xvdi2 etc.
If you attach a PARTITION it will appear as /dev/xvdi - it seems this
is what you have done.

In a terminal in the qube to which you attached the block device,
mount it:
sudo mount /dev/xvdi /mnt

Questions about RAM in dom0 actually feature in the Xen FAQs - xl info shows
the system RAM in MB - "free memory" in the output shows the total
not allocated to any qube or dom0, which can be useful.

Issuing `xl info` from a dom0 terminal will output the total system RAM
size usable by Xen, look for the "total_memory" line.

[qubes-users] trying to mount a USB drive w/o a sys-usb in Terminal

2017-06-11 Thread qubester

I seem to have done this successfully sometime not long ago, but now am
unable to do it again

1)
qvm-block -l
dom0:sdb3
2)
I then attached to the AppVM I want successfully
3)
However, in the file system it is not listed as a device, per below I'm
supposed to mount it ?

I don't know the proper command

mount sdb3 /dev

etc

Assuming I've attached the correct partition I guess , when I did this
via the VM GUI it showed some devices , but complained they were in
windows format or something.

So, went to trying it via CLI , I may even be repeating troubleshooting
from when I did this last.

I don't have the USB device allocated in the VM tabs, because when I do
that I lose my USB mouse control and am left with only the PS2
keyboard, and end up having to reboot Qubes :)

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/usb/
If the device does not appear in Nautilus, you will need to mount it
manually. The device will show up as /dev/xvdi (or /dev/xvdj if there is
already one device attached if two, /dev/xvdk, and so on).

Dom0 memory is intentionally limited to 4GB (and actually even less than
that if your physical RAM would be smaller). Do you see some issue due to
this limitation or you just noticed that it's limited?

> Is there any way that can guarantee the total amount of RAM available

Qubes "system" has access to more memory than dom0 alone.

Anyway, it's possible to tweak the 4GB limit from grub cmdlines but
unless you have some issues, you probably shouldn't increase it.

[qubes-users] Re: No bootable device neither in BIOS or UEFI after Qubes R3 fresh install

2017-06-11 Thread arnaud . fortier
I had the same issue on a Thinkpad x230 where I installed a second hard drive
using the m-SATA connector, in the BIOS I switched the first boot disk to be
the m-SATA, told Qubes to use both disks and first reboot failed right after
grub's menu without any error messages, I reinstall Qubes from scratch changing
the boot order to boot on the SATA disk first then m-SATA and it did the trick.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the distribution :)
