No luck for me, I even swapped out network cards thinking that was the problem.
No internet what so ever. I guess no Qubes for me until this is fixed.

Meltdown requires a Xen fix (at a minimum), here's the current:
https://xenbits.xen.org/xsa/advisory-254.html

Spectre is a whole 'nother can of worms. Not even really fixable in any robust
way, it seems, but from what I gather reading this paper, it is very hard to
exploit: https://xenbits.xen.org/xsa/advisory-254.html

Sorry Wael, can't make a hardware recommendation there but to address
something Taiidan said further upthread about PS2 keyboards and ground
wires:

https://www.pcworld.com/article/161166/article.html
Their work only applies to older, PS/2 keyboards, but the data they get is
"pretty good," they say. On these keyboards, "the data cable is so close
to the ground cable, the emanations from the data cable leak onto the
ground cable, which acts as an antenna," Barisani said.

I think one is EPS and another one is ATX. I read on coreboot that adapters
can catch on fire, but not sure if that applies here as my understanding is
adapters if for hooking up both CPUs in parallel. What do you think?

[qubes-users] Tweak Tool not working as expected after upgrade to Fedora 26

2018-01-03 Thread Mark Malcom
Well guys, just trying to see if anyone is facing the same issue here:

I downloaded fedora-26 template and after that my gnome-tweak-tool is
completely ignored: no themes, no windows scaling anymore. Not just the Tweak
Tool, but if I try to change the scale factor with gnomesettings, that is also
ignored.
This is true for new and existing appVMs and also, an upgrade from Fedora 25 to
26 with subsequent qubes trimming yields the same result.

It is really annoying as I have a 4K display and now had to downgrade the
resolution and still getting very small windows.

Maybe could anyone shed a light what can be done to get these settings back
again? I'm not sure if there is any other package that needs installed and
configured for the Tweak Tool to work, plus gnome scaling settings.

Thanks everyone.

During the course of our research, we developed the following proofs of
concept (PoCs):

A PoC that demonstrates the basic principles behind variant 1 in userspace
on the tested Intel Haswell Xeon CPU, the AMD FX CPU, the AMD PRO CPU and an
ARM Cortex A57 [2]. This PoC only tests for the ability to read data inside
mis-speculated execution within the same process, without crossing any
privilege boundaries.

A PoC for variant 1 that, when running with normal user privileges under a
modern Linux kernel with a distro-standard config, can perform arbitrary reads
in a 4GiB range [3] in kernel virtual memory on the Intel Haswell Xeon CPU. If
the kernel's BPF JIT is enabled (non-default configuration), it also works on
the AMD PRO CPU. On the Intel Haswell Xeon CPU, kernel virtual memory can be
read at a rate of around 2000 bytes per second after around 4 seconds of
startup time. [4]

A PoC for variant 2 that, when running with root privileges inside a KVM
guest created using virt-manager on the Intel Haswell Xeon CPU, with a
specific (now outdated) version of Debian's distro kernel [5] running on the
host, can read host kernel memory at a rate of around 1500 bytes/second, with
room for optimization. Before the attack can be performed, some initialization
has to be performed that takes roughly between 10 and 30 minutes for a machine
with 64GiB of RAM; the needed time should scale roughly linearly with the
amount of host RAM. (If 2MB hugepages are available to the guest, the
initialization should be much faster, but that hasn't been tested.)

A PoC for variant 3 that, when running with normal user privileges, can
read kernel memory on the Intel Haswell Xeon CPU under some precondition. We
believe that this precondition is that the targeted kernel memory is present
in the L1D cache.

[qubes-users] sys-usb starts, but custom-usb vm fails with "Unable to reset PCI device..." (4.x-rc3)

2018-01-03 Thread Dave C
I'd like to leave sys-usb as is, but create another usb vm for attaching a
keyboard (without networking).

My problem is that my new "usb-keyboard" vm fails to start. With "Start
failed: internal error: Unable to reset PCI device :00:14.0: no FLR, PM
reset or bus reset available"

I've tried the -o no-string-reset=True option, that had no effect.

I tried cloning sys-usb. Still sys-usb has no problem starting up, but the
clone gives the error.

I've rebooted the machine, with neither usb vm auto-starting, and even when I
start usb-keyboard as the first vm to attach 00:14.0, it gives the error.
After usb-keyboard gives that error, sys-usb has no problem starting.

I've compared the output of `qvm-prefs sys-usb` vs `qvm-prefs usb-keyboard` and
I don't see any significant difference.

So, what sort of hidden difference is there between sys-usb and my custom usb
vm that allows sys-usb to start?

Appreciate any help, thanks.

[qubes-users] Enable PCI_HOTPLUG

2018-01-03 Thread Connor Page
Hmmm, this kind of makes qvm-pci useless... I think this should be enabled in
vm kernels and then users who want hotplug enabled could just add that kernel
flavour to their grub.

Have you considered making the root filesystem of your VM have more space?

In the settings dialog for a VM its the "System storage max size" item which
you can change. Be aware that the VM likely needs to restart to access the
extra space.

[qubes-users] Acer TravelMate B

2018-01-03 Thread juh
Hi all,

Qubes OS 4.0 (current rc) does not install at all on my small Acer
TravelMate. Version 3.2 installed without problems, but I had random
freezes so that I could not work with the notebook. I was not able to
send a HCL.

WiFi and USB worked.

The notebook has an Intel Celeron CPU N3060 @ 1.60GHz

[qubes-users] Re: Disable root password on fedora-25-minimal (Qubes 4.0rc3)

2018-01-03 Thread Fabrizio Romano Genovese
Ok, so for future reference (I found the instructions in
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vm-sudo/ to be not completely clear):

The files mentioned in the first part of https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vm-sudo/,
namely:

/etc/sudoers.d/qubes
/etc/polkit-1/rules.d/00-qubes-allow-all.rules
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/qubes-allow-all.pkla

are to be created/edited in the VM, not in Dom0. This effectively solves the
problem.

[qubes-users] Qubes 4rc3: More space needed on the / filesystem.

2018-01-03 Thread Fabrizio Romano Genovese
Hello everyone,

I am trying to install texlive on a fedora-26 template vm. The package is quite
big, nevertheless it is correctly downloaded. After this, when the actual
installation process would be supposed to start, it fails with the message:

At least *MB more space needed on the / filesystem

I have tried to use qvm-block to attach some cache file to the vm (as
suggested, for instance, in (
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/template/fedora/upgrade-21-to-23/ )
but giving

qvm-block attach fedora-26 cachefile.img

produces the error

qvm-block: error: backend vm 'dom0' doesn't expose device 'cachefile.img'

How do I solve this? I read around that qvm-block is buggy with loop devices,
but I am not sure this is the kind of problem I am facing. I also supposed this
may have something to do with having a sys-usb VM (the references I found to
qvm-block usage are all very outdated and antecedent to the sys-usb era), but
then again I don't know precisely how should I proceed.

Cheers,
Fab

Believe PCI passthrough had been the major holdup for 4.0 release but I
could be wrong. I'm curious to see if Xen/Qubes is impacted as well. One
article says there was a rumor Xen was, another says there are comments in
the code that Xen PV/HVM is not. Embargo lifts on the 4th, so there should
be more facts then. Wouldn't want to engage in making speculative
assumptions (cough).

It seems as if Linux countermeasures will involve a significant rewrite aka.
FUCKWIT.

Is this perhaps why there is no final 4.0 release?
