Re: [qubes-users] New HCL Entry: Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (20HDCTO1WW)

2018-01-06 Thread Josef Johansson
Just to note this here, we tried to install Qubes 3.2 on a T470p with intel
and nvidia graphics, with secureboot off and starting the installer through
refind. It all went fine, except that neither ethernet nor wifi was
detected ( solvable through fw updates I assume ). X started ok though.

Re: [qubes-users] Help verifying install files: how to verify the Release 3 Signing Key?

2018-01-06 Thread Kyle Breneman

After you import both the master and signing keys, you can check them with
'gpg --check-sigs' which should have output like this:
pub rsa4096 2017-03-06 [SC]
  5817A43B283DE5A9181A522E1848792F9E2795E9
uid [ unknown] Qubes OS Release 4 Signing Key
sig!31848792F9E2795E9 2017-03-06 Qubes OS Release 4 Signing Key
sig! DDFA1A3E36879494 2017-03-08 Qubes Master Signing Key

(I have the Qubes 4 key but its otherwise the same.)

This lists the Qubes master key under the uid for the Qubes release key,
showing the release key has been signed by the master. The exclamation mark
after "sig" means the signature has been verified as good.

Dear Chris,

Thanks very much for your patient help with this! I was able to verify
all keys and signatures and successfully installed Qubes 3.2 over the
holidays.

Regards,
Kyle

Yep, got trouble with USB3 too. As far as USB-to-Ethernet adapters are
concerned I had success with Apple's (which is USB2)...

[qubes-users] 4.0 rc3: fedora 26 minimal firewall issues

2018-01-06 Thread khmartinsen
I am using the fedora 26 minimal template for my net and firewall qubes. I have
installed all the necessary packages for networking and everything except
firewall rules work. In the VM settings for qubes connected to my firewall qube
it says "Networking qube does not support 'qubes-firewall' ...". In the
firewall qube, systemctl shows that qubes-firewall is running.
Are there other packages or settings I need to configure for the appvm to be
used as a firewall?

Based on swami's post from 9/15/17 I suspect you need kernel 4.9 in

He is talking about a ThinkPad P51 which has both DISCRETE (NVidia only)
and HYBRID (Intel with option to switch to NVidia) graphics. I just
recently installed Qubes 3.2 on ThinkPad P51 and posted my experience to
qubes-users and my website:

http://svensemmler.org/blog/2017/12/17/qubes-on-thinkpad-p51.html

There I also describe an alternative to Stephan Marwedel's approach to
the network drivers. I used an Ethernet-to-USB adapter to run the
initial dom0 update.

Anyway, all that doesn't help you.

1. Text install is not working for you
2. X server with Intel graphics needs dom0 on 4.9
3. Install media of Qubes 3.2 is kernel 4.4

So you either get R4 to work (my last attempt with RC3 was rough - but
your mileage may differ) OR you give Frédéric Pierret's _unofficial_
R3.3 a try ...

Nice. thanks. just want to confirm:

1. We are able also to install actual OS on one flash drive using another flash
drive with ISO image on it (or also DVD ISO image)? True for Qubes 4.0 ?

2. In order to install OS on flash drive the minimum size should be 32GB on it?

How did you connect the USB printer to your dispVM? Did you use qvm-usb to
attach it? You'd need to do at least that first.

It's a normal ISO, just burn like you usually would. I think in Debian
Gnome for example, I right-clicked it and picked burn to DVD.

Yes, that works but you might want to make a full backup of your hard
drive first just in case. Once that's done, boot off the DVD and plug in
your USB drive before the installer starts. Make very sure you are
choosing to install to the USB drive.

[qubes-users] Announcement: Fedora 26 TemplateVM Upgrade

2018-01-06 Thread Andrew David Wong
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Dear Qubes Community,

Fedora 25 reached EOL ([end-of-life]) on 2017-12-12. We sincerely
apologize for our failure to provide timely notice of this event. It
is strongly recommend that all Qubes users upgrade their Fedora 25
TemplateVMs and StandaloneVMs to Fedora 26 immediately. We provide
step-by-step [upgrade instructions] for upgrading your existing
TemplateVMs and StandaloneVMs in-place on both Qubes 3.2 and Qubes
4.0. For a complete list of TemplateVM versions supported for your
specific version of Qubes, see [Supported TemplateVM Versions].

We also provide fresh Fedora 26 TemplateVM packages through the
official Qubes repositories, which you can get with the following
commands (in dom0).

Standard Fedora 26 TemplateVM:

$ sudo qubes-dom0-update qubes-template-fedora-26

[Minimal] Fedora 26 TemplateVM:

$ sudo qubes-dom0-update qubes-template-fedora-26-minimal

After upgrading to a Fedora 26 TemplateVM, please remember to set all
qubes that were using the old template to use the new one. The
instructions to do this can be found in the [upgrade instructions]
for your specific version.

Please note that no user action is required regarding the OS version
in dom0. If you're using Qubes 3.2 or 4.0, there is no dom0 OS
upgrade available, since none is currently required. For details,
please see our [Note on dom0 and EOL].

If you're using an older version of Qubes than 3.2, we strongly
recommend that you upgrade to 3.2, as older versions are no longer
supported.

Yes, I am also very disappointed in purism, and its still unclear for
me why they went the Intel road, when - at 2013 - they could have
created a more freedom-respecting equivalent of G505S, instead of

This was hashed over in the Coreboot mailing list recently, see
https://mail-archive.com/coreboot@coreboot.org/msg50746.html. To be
honest, I'm kind of tired of hearing about Purism now. ;) I think people
  have made their positions clear.

:<
I only make so much noise because no one else is doing so - they have
strangely universal positive coverage in the mainstream tech media and the
real facts and downsides are never mentioned or investigated - not to
mention that the real libre products like TALOS 2 and Novena get little to
no press for some reason.

I respect your opinion, but there are still so many laymen who think
that "LibreM" means "Libre" (the purism goons say it doesn't and that its
not their fault people are confused) so I feel as though I must continue.

I appreciate your enthusiasm for the AMD products.
Nah I don't like AMD due to PSP - it is simply that they added it much
later than intel did ME so the pre-PSP AMD stuff is still fast enough to
be useful which is why I recommend it for those who require x86-64.

My only CPU enthusiasm is for POWER (and thus TALOS 2)

It was actually one of
your posts along with several other people's that convinced me to get the
G505s. But there might be more effective ways of communicating your
concerns with Purism than frequently repeating it to the same groups of
people. :) You mention tech media for example, have you contacted them?

I have many times, sometimes I receive a reply but it never goes anywhere :[
I assume they receive so many emails they simply ignore mine.

Or
how about writing a fact-based expose (make sure it doesn't seem like a
rant) and submitting it or blogging it somewhere? I'm no PR guy though, so
maybe those aren't good ideas.
No they are :3 its just that the tech media only cares about shiny
appley type products not stuff made for real work.

Does the KGPE-D16 or KCMA-D8 support an Nvme PCI-E  SSD like an Intel
750 Series PCIe 400GB?
Yeah there are a few on the coreboot mailinglist who use those and they
are satisfied, the D16 has more PCI-e bandwidth to go around so I would
get that if you want more high bandwidth PCI-e cards.
The OEM board firmware doesn't support booting but some coreboot
payloads do.

I ask this since both boards have Gen2 PCI-E
slots and I don't know if those slots shall be a bottleneck if I desired
building a separate system some day around one of these boards.
The slots are all directly connected to the northbridge so none are
over-subscribed

The main SSD wow-factor areas are write-speed and I/O both of which
won't be impacted by 2.0 so I highly doubt you would notice in anything
but a fringe use case - having a drive that is x8 or x16 also helps as
you would have more lanes and thus more bandwidth of v2.0.

Given
the philosophy behind Qubes, I'm really tempted to seriously look into
such a build and how it woul fit together. What graphic card would you
recommend for the above boards?
As always I recommend AMD graphics as nvidia isn't friendly to linux or
virtualization, other then that I don't keep up with the marketing - of
course you will want something new with plenty of VRAM if you want to
play new video games, you can also get two graphics cards if you want to
have dual gaming VM's as the board comes with dual USB controllers out
of the box if you use a breakout cable.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Lenovo G505s with Coreboot and Qubes R4-rc3 fails to boot

2018-01-06 Thread Ivan Ivanov
I believe, something like this could be reliably determined only by experiment.
but 16 GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs are very expensive - especially now,
when the RAM prices hiked and 4 GB of DDR3 now costs like 8 GB :P
Currently it makes much more sense to get extra coreboot supported hardware
(e.g. some spare G505S laptops) rather than more RAM...

Do you live in a country with favorable customer laws?
Could you order a couple of 16 GB memory modules, test them,
and if they don't work (or if you simply don't need that much memory)
return them to seller without additional costs to you? such as repack fee

Best regards,
Ivan Ivanov

Taiidan, what GPU do you use? The board has only a VGA, which is OK for

Hmm curious is this your first time building a PC? :0 I thought you had

would get this all set up before you buy a newer GFX card - that one
will work fine for now.

Hey when you get this let me know if you need any help setting up VM
gaming it is very difficult but very rewarding.
One gotcha I have noticed is NUMA alignment, each 16 core CPU contains
two NUMA nodes and performance will suffer greatly if things are not
properly aligned (gets tricker in VM's too)

TPM:
I am not sure about TPM's I would call ASUS and ask for a board
compatible part number.

Newegg Links:
I can't view newegg links, you would have to find a OEM link to show me.
I would get a 1KW PSU from a reputable company, like I said dual EPS12V,
modular and japanese capacitors is what you want.

Case Price - no more than $200 unless it includes nice front HDD hot
swap bays - Don't use the PSU that comes with the case.

I would also get front drive bay HDD enclosures that have a fan
otherwise your drives will get hot inside the case and be a pain to service.

Re: [qubes-users] Compatible Hardware.

2018-01-06 Thread taii...@gmx.com
That hardware is quite new so it probably won't play nice with qubes,
and like any new x86-64 hardware it has a black box supervisor processor
(in this case Intel ME)

Intel CPU's are also now 30% slower due to the meltdown/spectre bug.

I would instead suggest a system that has owner controlled libre
firmware available such as the KGPE-D16 or KCMA-D8 boards for improved
security - they have a qubes HCL entry and as there is no hardware code
signing enforcement they have the ability for the firmware to be fixed
in case anything incompatibilities arise (which will never happen with
most OEM's leaving your IOMMU broken or what not)

Coreboot for these boards has open source hardware init.

The KGPE-D16 supports dual cpus, up to 32 cores and 192GB RAM, the
KCMA-D8 supports dual cpus, 16 cores and 128GB RAM - both support a port
of OpenBMC for secure libre remote management and IOMMU-GFX so you can
play games in a VM as well. Coupled with a supported AMD graphics card
(nvidia isn't friendly with linux) and I guarantee you will be more
satisfied and more secure for a lot less money than that xeon build.

Judging by the end result(crash) and the fact that my Qubes has worked
well until recently I believe that I am hitting the same issue as you

1. Oh, my bad, I meant to burn ISO on DVD or/and Flash Drive, and then use PC
to install on it...

2. I didn't find guide how to burn DVD Qubes ISO

3. As I understood it's possible to literally install Qubes on flash drive and
run it from it?

thanks

[qubes-users] Compatible Hardware.

2018-01-06 Thread Sir Hugo Drax
Hello everyone,

Like most of you, I came upon Qubes OS and fell in love. I have it
running on an Asrock Z77 Extreme 11 with 32GBram and an i7-4790K. Apart
from a few unexplained hangups from time to time, it has been smooth
sailing. I'm in the process of building a brute of a machine (For heavy
number crunching and video editing etc). My objective is to some day
retire the machine I'm currently building into my daily driver with
Qubes OS but that is some time in the future.

My current confusion is over 3 parts on my build list. I wish to know if
these are compatible with Qubes 4.

- X2 Intel Xeon Silver 4114 2,20GHz

- Supermicro X11DPi-NT

- Sapphire Radeon RX 580 Pulse

I suspect The board and processors are probably OK but have no clue if
the above graphic card would work. Any information and or suggestions
for alternatives if these are unsupported is appreciated and welcome.

Thanks in advance for your time and heartfelt appreciation to the Qubes
team who toil over this OS.

Cheers

Drax

But I have not been able to get template-based windows VMs, they always fail

I've been seeing this too, although sometimes it goes on after half a minute
only to hang at some other point (after loads of messages).

I noticed that if I manually shut down all qubes, INCLUDING, sys-net, before

Look through that journalctl log manually and try to find more crashes.
Might be something else besides OOM causing them too. Also, look through
/var/log/xen/console/hypervisor.log for crash messages.

OK, I see what you mean. What are you trying to accomplish? If it's just a
one time file copy, you could use qvm-copy-to-vm to copy it to your
template from another VM that does have network access. If it's a curl you
want to run on every startup of a disposable VM, there should be some way
to script that. Be careful to not customize it too much though, because if
you make a change that affects Tor browser itself you might make it easily
fingerprintable.

Unless that helped with the crashes, go ahead and keep using wireless. I
think this is actually what you are hitting:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3079. You can see if it's
the same issue by doing a "sudo journalctl" after a crash and looking for

[qubes-users] Q4.0 rc3 (current testing) - power off/ suspend issues.

2018-01-06 Thread haaber
Happy new year! I experience since Q4.rc2 some problems connected to
power-off or suspends. They are of minor annoyance, but maybe they can
be improved ...
1) after 0-10 succesful suspends (on a HP zbook 14 laptop) the hdd will
no longer power off any more at a new lid-down suspend. After lid-reopen
& login, I can no longer start any qubes (neither startmenu nor
qvm-start in dom0) or execute any command in running qubes (neither
start-menu nor using qvm-run in dom0); if I happen to have a terminal
open in a running qube, commands will be executed as expected.
Additonally sys-whonix connection dies.
=> The isuue requires a reboot to solve.
2) Reboots hang systematically at "Reached target shutdown" and has to
be rebooted via a coldboot.
