Add iommu=debug loglvl=all to your Xen boot options, then display the

Thanks for posting this advice last year--it worked pretty well for my
XPS13 9350 until I switched to Qubes R4.0 (rc3). sys-net tray icon
shows wireless adapter as "device not managed" regardless of setting PCI
arbitrator to be less strict.

Just checking in to see if you (or anyone) is still using that laptop
and has made the switch to Qubes R4 and has an easy fix. I'll post more
details (lspci, dmesg) soon as time permits if not.

thank you!

[qubes-users] Re: Troubleshooting IOMMU compatibility

2018-01-16 Thread jspiegelmann

run qubes-hcl-report , see what it tells you.

It tells me that IOMMU is unavailable. Like I said, my processor does
support it so it must be something else in the chain that isn't working
properly. (It also tells me that interrupt remapping isn't available but
I read on GitHub that there was an issue detecting that on AMD devices
due to a capitalization mismatch from how it's reported by Intel
devices.) Everything else is available.

Bios should ideally have IOMMU and SVM settings, SR-IOV optional (and
irrelevant for this purpose).

It just has one generic "virtualization extensions" option (which
presumably implies it's enabling more than one thing).

Which PCI devices refuse to boot?

Any refuse to work when connected to an HVM. IOMMU is not working at
all, so I'm wondering how to troubleshoot it and see if it's just an
improper configuration by the motherboard manufacturers that can be
fixed in some way.

Re: [qubes-users] rc3: Split-gpg + enigmail frequent "qubes.Gpg" prompts

2018-01-16 Thread mossy-nw
I've experienced this, too. It could be a side-effect of a recent
presumably security enhancement disabling qvm-copy-to-vm and
qvm-move-to-vm, replacing with qvm-copy and qvm-move, requiring the user
to enter the target domain in a dom0 confirmation popup window.

using qvm-copy-to-vm (within a VM, not dom0) gives the following message:

```
qvm-copy-to-vm/qvm-move-to-vm tools are deprecated,
use qvm-copy/qvm-move to avoid typing target qube name twice
```

If it helps, you can copy from the dom0 dialog window to the dom0
clipboard and paste over and over. But I agree, it makes GPG
encrypting/signing everything by default (which is what makes enigmail
so wonderful!) too painful to use. A bug report --
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3470 -- will hopefully
help find some security-minded compromise to help users encrypting many
emails.

thx,

m0ssy

[qubes-users] Managing shortcuts to applications in AppVMs - dom0 "Error?!"

2018-01-16 Thread rabeaschmitz287
Hey everyone,

i used this tutorial for qubes out of the qubes documentation
(https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/managing-appvm-shortcuts/) to Managing shortcuts
to applications in AppVMs.

I installed Libre Office and other applications out of the fedora-23 template
VM Software Store. Now i´ve tried to get these applications into the list of
available applications.

I´ve used the terminal in dom0 with "qvm-sync-appmenus fedora-23" and it works
but the terminal says:

"Warning: ignoring key 'Comment' of bijiben.desktop"

So what does this mean?

[qubes-users] Release of Qubes R4.0rc4 :: fix Release Schedule date

2018-01-16 Thread '[799]' via qubes-users
Hello,

Can someone from the Qubes Dev Team update the Release Schedule for Qubes R4.0?

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/releases/4.0/schedule still shows that release
candidate 4 will be released on the 8th of January.

Maybe fix the entry to "to be announced" or maybe add a hint "because of
SPECTRE/Meltdown".

It just looks bad if the release schedule is not up-to-date.

[qubes-users] HOWTO install boot-loader for Q4.0 RC3 separately on USB?

2018-01-16 Thread edalvarez
I've tried to install Q4.0 RC3 two times on my system with the
bootloader on a separate USB. However, two times after shutdown, the
system refuses to start (I get past the FDE-prompt, then it hangs). I've
reinstalled two times now, but its not encouraging.

Am I doing anything wrong in my setup? During install, the "only" thing
I do "ekstra" apart from following defaults, is to select the ekstra
USB-device as bootloader. I haven't done anything fancy with manual
partitioning so far, just point-and-click during install. It seems like
this setup installs part of the actual system into the USB and then
continues onto the SSD / main drive of the machine when it runs out of
space.

Is this an bug connected to 4.0 or is it a general problem?

Any suggestions? Anybody got it running effortless who has anything to
share?

-Edward

Re: [qubes-users] Graphic Tablet Compatibility (basic features)

2018-01-16 Thread 'Tom Zander' via qubes-users
I think I know why you get that error.

any part of the kernel (and drivers are part of the kernel) are off-limits to
change for any Qube VM.

To avoid loading a module you don't have to remove it, you can just blacklist a
module.
Your distro may have a specific way of doing it, but a little googling showed
me this and that looks about right to me;

Re: [qubes-users] Graphic Tablet Compatibility (basic features)

2018-01-16 Thread Fabrizio Romano Genovese
I saw this reply only yesterday, unfortunately.

So, I followed your suggestion and looked around. I found this, that should do
exactly what you say:
https://cwcode.wordpress.com/2014/01/14/compiling-a-new-kernel-module-to-use-hid-core-for-a-wacom-bamboo-pad/

Now, since this guide is not for fedora, I wanted to try something easier
before. In the comments someone says

"I found it easier to add usbhid.quirks=0x056a:0x0318:0x4000 to the kernel
commandline in /etc/default/grub.
0x4000 is HID_QUIRK_NO_IGNORE. The first two numbers is the device’s ID."

So I tried to do the same. I clone the template-vm on which sys-usb is based
and I added in /etc/default/grub
usbhid.quirks=0x056a:0x00dd:0x4000

where 056a identifies wacom as producer and 00dd is my product number, found in
/sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices.

When I rebooted nothing happened. I also tried to put this line in grub.qubes,
with no success whatsoever. Then I tried following the guide, but I fail pretty
quicly: Trying to remove

/lib/modules/4.9.56-21.pvops.qubes.x86_64/kernel/drivers/input/tablet/wacom_serial4.ko

Gives me the error

/lib/modules/4.9.56-21.pvops.qubes.x86_64/kernel/drivers/input/tablet/wacom_serial4.ko

Then I tried at least to monitor usb with usbmon. I gave

modprobe usbmon

and then started monitoring my wacom tablet, that is on 2u, with:

sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/usbmon/2u

usbmon doesn't sense anything when I move the pen on the tablet, it only senses
something when I connect/disconnect it. When I connect the tablet I get:

I'm sure that if someone wants to take it up as a GSoC project, a lot of people
would be very happy. :-)
