Re: [qubes-users] Is not safe to use Qubes OS 3.2?

davidmizr2...@gmail.com:

Hi, i'm asking because my hardware is not compatible with qubes 4.0

Is not safe to use Qubes OS 3.2?

Thanks

It is less safe to use 3.2 than it used to be when it was getting
patches. It doesn't immediately become unsafe once it is no longer
supported, especially if you are keeping the templates up to date with
security patches. However, the longer you stay on 3.2, the less safe it
gets.

[qubes-users] Qubes Canary #20

2019-07-04 Thread Andrew David Wong
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Dear Qubes Community,

We have published Qubes Canary #20. The text of this canary is
reproduced below. This canary and its accompanying signatures will
always be available in the Qubes Security Pack (qubes-secpack).

View Qubes Canary #20 in the qubes-secpack:

it:

---===[ Qubes Canary #20 ]===---

Statements
- ---

The Qubes core developers who have digitally signed this file [1]
state the following:

1. The date of issue of this canary is July 3, 2019.

2. There have been 49 Qubes Security Bulletins published so far.

3. The Qubes Master Signing Key fingerprint is:

427F 11FD 0FAA 4B08 0123 F01C DDFA 1A3E 3687 9494

4. No warrants have ever been served to us with regard to the Qubes OS
Project (e.g. to hand out the private signing keys or to introduce
backdoors).

5. We plan to publish the next of these canary statements in the first
two weeks of October 2019. Special note should be taken if no new canary
is published by that time or if the list of statements changes without
plausible explanation.

Special announcements
- --

None.

Disclaimers and notes
- --

We would like to remind you that Qubes OS has been designed under the
assumption that all relevant infrastructure is permanently
compromised. This means that we assume NO trust in any of the servers
or services which host or provide any Qubes-related data, in
particular, software updates, source code repositories, and Qubes ISO
downloads.

This canary scheme is not infallible. Although signing the declaration
makes it very difficult for a third party to produce arbitrary
declarations, it does not prevent them from using force or other
means, like blackmail or compromising the signers' laptops, to coerce
us to produce false declarations.

The news feeds quoted below (Proof of freshness) serves to demonstrate
that this canary could not have been created prior to the date stated.
It shows that a series of canaries was not created in advance.

This declaration is merely a best effort and is provided without any
guarantee or warranty. It is not legally binding in any way to
anybody. None of the signers should be ever held legally responsible
for any of the statements made here.

Version 1.4.1 of Qubes-vpn-support has been released. It includes tweaks
for smoother operation, greater control over the firewall, and revised
docs in the Readme:

https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support

Features

Provides a fail closed, antileak VPN tunnel environment
Isolates the tunnel client within a dedicated Proxy VM
     Prevents configuration errors
     Separate firewall VM not required

Easy setup

Simple install script; No file editing or IP numbers necessary
Lets you 'drop in' configuration files from VPN service provider
Flexible installation into template or to individual ProxyVMs

New in this version, v1.4.1

     Qubes 4.0.1 support
     Control over specific firewall restrictions
Better compatibility with MTU fragmentation detection

New in v1.4.0

     Anti-leak for IPv6
All DNS requests forced to chosen VPN DNS
     Firewall integrity checked before connecting
     Quicker re-connection
     Supports passwordless cert authentication

* Also note that Qubes 3.x is no longer detected or supported.

* Updating to the new version is simple and described in the
'Quickstart' guide.

* For users of qubes-tunnel (twin vpn project), an equivalent update is
forthcoming in the next week. However, if you wish to switch to
Qubes-vpn-support now, you can install it without issues for a new VPN VM.

Which Debian-9 packages besides openvpn need to be installed in the
Template for QVS to work ?

I'm finding that
sudo apt-get install openvpn isn't enough on the default Deb-9
Template just installed, and copying over backed up AppVMs from
another machine.

It does worked with another Debian-9 template copied over from the other
machine but I'd like to use the fresh installed Deb-9 on the new
machine instead.

am finding that bash ./install is just returning empty if it's
installed already . would that be normal ?

Ooh, overlooked that step. How about the directory called “Qubes-vpn-support”
that is supposed to be copied? Or is that another directory I can just create?
Qubes is starting to make me feel computer illiterate since can’t even get the
basics right.

Qubes-vpn-support is the repository at
https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support.
You need to clone it with these commands:
1. Install git if its not installed with "sudo dnf install git" or "sudo apt install
git"
2. Run "git clone https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support.git;
3. Then the "Qubes-vpn-support" directory will exist

If you're not familiar with git, you can easily download
Qubes-vpn-support from a browser: On the Qubes-vpn-support project page,
click the "Clone or download" button then click "Download ZIP".

If you downloaded it in a different VM than your VPN (proxy) VM, just
Qubes copy it there:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/copying-files/

This is a basic Qubes skill. You may want to review the Common Tasks
section of the docs to get familiar with Qubes:

The 600 or so bugs in 3.2 wont be fixed, and new bugs wont be recorded.

More importantly, 4.0 has many defaults (and hardware requirements) that

For multimedia, I use the Qubes Debian Multimedia qube:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/multimedia/

It uses google chrome, which by default, comes with all codecs and multimedia
stuff installed. I use it for youtube mainly, but any multimedia site should
work fine with it.

No, I could try that I suppose, when I am getting some kind of network running.

Qubes-vpn-support is the repository at
https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support.
You need to clone it with these commands:
1. Install git if its not installed with "sudo dnf install git" or "sudo apt
install git"
2. Run "git clone https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support.git;
3. Then the "Qubes-vpn-support" directory will exist

I have a booted system now, but without working keyboard, trackpad (using
external keyboard+mouse), wifi (crashing when attaching to sys-net). Perhaps
Apple is doing some nasty things to lock up their Macbook.

Ooh, overlooked that step. How about the directory called “Qubes-vpn-support”
that is supposed to be copied? Or is that another directory I can just create?
Qubes is starting to make me feel computer illiterate since can’t even get the
basics right.
