Re: [qubes-users] Errors updating Fedora 30 template

2020-11-10 Thread Shawn Creighton
No modifications, it gives me those errors even with a fresh install when
trying to use sys-whonix as the updatevm.
I changed the UpdateVM from sys-whonix to sys-firewall and was able to
update Dom0
Is that safe?

Re: [qubes-users] Unable to install Qubes 4.0.3 in 10th Gen i7 with Intel Integrated UHD 630

2020-11-10 Thread adrian...@gmail.com
I seem to have managed to get this working.

A note for anyone who has a similar issue, my 'blank screen' that it got
stuck at.. Well I decided to just leavge it and walk away, and when I came
back I had the Qubes install screen.. Lesson learnt, when there is no error
message, it might be worth waiting and see if it comes through.

Once in, the screen resolution was set at 'default', but an update to the
latest kernel and a reboot sorted that and now I am up and running.

I have an Alienware 17 with Skylake.

Not sure whether the problem is graphics or something to do with SSD. Or
Kernel.

I did discover that I could install Qubes 4.1 rc from September. While this
is not to be “trusted”. It allows me to try things. I am basically
waiting for 4.1 final. Then reinstall that.

[qubes-users] Unable to install Qubes 4.0.3 in 10th Gen i7 with Intel Integrated UHD 630

2020-11-10 Thread adrian...@gmail.com

Hardware:
PRIME B460M-A
Intel® Core™ i7-10700 Processor with integrated
Intel® UHD Graphics 630

Issue Summary:
Boot mode set to UEFI (there is no legacy GRUB boot option).
With default installation, the UEFI process hangs with a Panic CPU/Fatal
Page Fault.
Editing the BOOTx64.cfg, and commenting out noexitboot and mapbs, it will
load through the UEFI boot process and then hangs on a black screen.
I am assuming that it is an issue with the Integrated Graphics (?).

This issue (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/5383) describes
the issue, but the fixes suggested there have not allowed the install to
continue.

Disabling the Nouveau driver by adding modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau to the BOOTx64.cfg file still leaves me stuck
at the black screen.

Adjusting the options=console=vga to options=console=none results in it
getting stuck on the initial UEFI bootloader.

Any further suggestions on what I can try to identify the issue?

Re: [qubes-users] PCIE gen 4 m.2 cards supported?

2020-11-10 Thread 'Totally Zoid' via qubes-users
I can't answer your question for certain, I changed my disk and CPU at the same
time. It takes me ~10 sec to start a disposable Firefox, from clicking on the
start menu entry to the window popping up (with about 20 VMs running in the
background and no heatsink on the SSD).

I used to have an i5 and a 5400rpm drive and it was slow as hell, I couldn't
even start two VMs at the same time without one of them crashing. Then a couple
years ago I upgraded to Ryzen 7 and a gen3x4 SSD and while things aren't quite
as instant as I'd like, it's good.

I dunno if you're running / can run at full speed a NVMe drive with the chipset
you're on. If not your CPU might be bottlenecking your disk speed, not just
your code execution speed. If you're upgrading the CPU you'll have to buy a new
motherboard, which is roughly $150 for Ryzens.

2020-11-10 Thread adrian...@gmail.com
Commenting out:
noexitboot=1 mapbs=1 in teh bootx64.cfg file gets me further, but only as
far as a black screen. I have tried setting console=none and that will not
get past the UEFI loader.

Seems like I am stuck. Best guess at the moment is that it is not liking
the Intel Integrated Graphics.

Not as strange as you thing... as usually those RAID features are

So in practice, there is no (or at least very rare) hardware RAID on a

on Qubes (or in Linux in general) you can safely relay on software raid

In practice (like appvm startup times), you can't even tell if your

Re: [qubes-users] How to setup Win10 HVM ?

2020-11-10 Thread Knut von Walter
Hi

well I just ran the command in the dom0 terminal: sudo qubes-dom0-update
qubes-windows-tools . This successfully installed
qubes-windows-tools.noarch 4.0.1-3 in dom0 :

However in order to test my successful installation I tried to test my
clipboard to copy text from AppVM vault to StandaloneVM windows-10. This
was not working.

As far as I know this is the main feature of Qubes-Windows-Tools.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Does anyone have an idea how to get my clipboard working?

Thank you.

Best

Theoretically, and in some test cases, maybe...

Not as strange as you thing... as usually those RAID features are
meaning windonws only software raid.
So in practice, there is no (or at least very rare) hardware RAID on a
desktop board.

on Qubes (or in Linux in general) you can safely relay on software raid
not the one your motherboard suggest, but what the Linux kernel (even
the fedora installer) provides you

In practice (like appvm startup times), you can't even tell if your
system runs from a SATA SSD or from an NVME m.2 SSD. Imagine the much
less theoretical speed difference you may get using a PCI gen 4 device
