2022-05-28 Thread M
According the doc, you don't need to do that.
Firewall policy which is see with qvm-firewall sys-firewall:
0. tcp 443
1. dns
2. icmp
3. drop

I still can't solve the problem.

[qubes-users] No wired internet (Intel I219-LM) on new 4.1 install

2022-05-24 Thread M
Everything is default with the exception of:

1. devices in sys-net is only with ethernet one. The other one, which was
listed as unknown (guess wifi, disabled from bios) was removed.
2. sys-firewall - limit traffic to * on TCP port 443.
3. Disabled TOR. It said that I will not have internet (don’t know if it is
connected, or mean only for whonix VMs)

The internet icon does not have an X.

I tried ping google from sys-net and sys-firewall terminal.

>From sys-net domain+ip went through, sys-firewall only ip.

Updates are also not working.

[qubes-users] Dell Precision 5750

2021-11-27 Thread Maestro M.
Hi,

I spent some time installing Qubes OS on my Dell Precision 5750 and thought
I would share the notes for others and future me.

Summary:

   - NVMe drives are not detected in installer (F12 -> BIOS -> Storage ->
Disable RAID and switch to AHCI)
   - BIOS must disable secure boot in order to work
   - Do not connect the DisplayLink HP docking stations - they will
reliably and abruptly crash the installer and run a bootloop
   - WiFi breaks if you select Debian as the default template VM, Fedora
   works good
   - Integrated Camera works but is USB based so you must have a sys-usb -
forcing you to install on the NVMe driver and not an SSD attached by USB.
   - Audio is broken but can be fixed, instructions logged here
   (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7091). The computer came
with a Comet Lake PCH cAVS and works nicely now!
   - GPU - nouveau driver isn't being super nice but it's also not crashing
   the system so that's good!

[qubes-users] Setting block.no_part_scan=no on sys-usb’s command line does not work

2020-12-25 Thread Demi M. Obenour
I am trying to disable automatic partition scanning in sys-usb,
and tried including block.no_part_scan=no in sys-usb’s kernelopts.
However, it had no effect. `block.no_part_scan=0` also doesn’t work.

Did I make a mistake in the command line?

Sincerely,

Demi

[qubes-users] Privilege escalation in Arch templates

2020-11-30 Thread Demi M. Obenour
The Arch package management system, Pacman, relies on a secret,
per-machine master key readable only by root. This is used to sign
the other Arch root signing keys. Anyone with access to the secret
part of the master key can present packages that Pacman will trust,
and thus execute arbitrary code as root.

In typical use, this is fine, since the master key is securely
generated and only readable by root. This is normally sufficient to
prevent the secret part of the key from being accessed by unauthorized
parties. However, in QubesOS, this is not sufficient. The master
key is stored on the root volume, so it is accessible to all AppVMs
based on the TemplateVM. Anyone who compromises one of these AppVMs
can dump the secret master key. If they can then perform an on-path
attack on the update process, this allows them to execute arbitrary
code on the TemplateVM.

To fix this vulnerability, it is necessary to ensure that the master
signing key is securely deleted after it has been generated. This can
be accomplished by placing /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/private-keys-v1.d on
a tmpfs, both while building and running the template. Pacman will
produce warnings about not being able to sign the master key, but
these are not fatal.

Sincerely,

Demi

Re: [qubes-users] How to install Maple in a Fedora-30 template in Qubes OS R4.0 ?

[qubes-users] Questions regarding updating a Fedora-template to a new version integer

2020-11-13 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
I have the following questions regarding updating a Fedora-template to a
new version integer:

1) Will the files in the desktop, documents, downloads and QubesIncoming
folder be deleted when updating it ?

2) Will all the AppVM's that is connected with the Fedora-template also be
updated and still work after the update ?

3) Will the installed applications in the Fedora-template have to be
reinstalled afterwards ?

4) If not, then why not let Qubes Update the Fedora-template to a new
version integer when the user accept it to do so, or at least create a
script file that a user can execute instead of having to execute all the
commands manually ?

Thank you for your advices.

In case you would like to know, here is a description of the application

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple

Regarding the "Fedora-30 template", if it has ended it's life long time

just the shown name of the template in the Qubes Applicatons menu ?

Do I understand you correctly "unman", that I can choose to either install

Re: [qubes-users] How to get a projector working with Qubes OS R4.0 and a Win10 HVM ?

2020-11-13 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
There is no need for "mounting" the projector to a specific VM like when
mounting USB-devices.

Re: [qubes-users] How to get a projector working with Qubes OS R4.0 and a Win10 HVM ?

2020-11-13 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
I forgot to write:

You just plug the HDMI-cable into the computer and the projector will only
show the left part of the desktop, which makes it possible to only show
windows on the left side of the desktop on the projector while the right
side of the desktop-space is used to only show windows on the PC. In case
you don't like this setting, it is possible to change it under "Display" as
mentioned above.

And it doesn't seem to matter if you plug the HDMI-cable into the PC before
or after starting the projector and PC or before or after login.

2020-11-13 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
Thank, you.

Yes, it worked without any problems.

In case others would like to know, you can go into the Qubes Applications
menu -> System Tools -> Display. Here you can change what shall be shown on
the projector and the resolution of the screen.

It seems that the resolution of the PC-screen changes to match the
resolution of the projector. And afterwards it is necessary to go into
"Display" to change the resolution of the PC-screen back to the resolution
that was used before connecting to a projector.

Re: [qubes-users] How to setup Win10 HVM ?

I think if it's possible to right-click on a file -> "Send to" -> "Copy to
other VM" and the file gets copied to the chosen VM, then the installed
"Qubes Windows Tools" seems to work properly.

[qubes-users] How to get a projector working with Qubes OS R4.0 and a Win10 HVM ?

2020-11-09 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
I would like to be certain that I'm able to get a projector working with
Qubes OS R4.0 and a Win10 HVM.

I'm going to connect the projector through a HDMI cable.

What shall I do to get the projector working with Qubes OS R4.0 and a Win10
HVM ?

Shall I just assign the projector the same way when using USB-divices or
how does it work with a external HDMI device ?

Re: [qubes-users] Suddenly I can't get internet access from within one of my Win 10 HVM's but I can from another one

2020-11-08 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
I don't know why. But it suddenly worked again the next time I started the
pc and opened the Win 10 HVM.

I saw also afterwards that although Windows 10 show that there isn't any
internet connection from within the Win 10 HVM it may not be so. So the
connection-icon in the Windows 10 start-menu isn't totally trustworthy.

I have also tried to restart both the router and the Win 10 HVM and start
the Win 10 -HVM after the router is connected to the internet with the same
result.

When I use my other Win 10 HVM and start it after my router is connected to
the internet, it show internet access already on the Win 10 logon page and
when I login I have no problems getting on the internet.

[qubes-users] Suddenly I can't get internet access from within one of my Win 10 HVM's but I can from another one

2020-10-14 Thread 'M' via qubes-users

Suddenly I can't get internet access from within one of my Win 10 HVM's,
but I can from another one.

I have compared the internet settings under "Qube Settings". And it says
sys-whonix in both HVM's.

What can be the reason for not being able to get internet access from
within one of my Win 10 HVM's... ?

I have installed Win 10 by using this method:

Re: [qubes-users] Fresh Install of Qubes 4.0.3 - No Wi-fi on sys-net with Intel Wireless-AC 9462 Card

2020-09-05 Thread Ivan M Lugo
Hi Jarrah,

Many thanks for the very informative and helpful responses. Also, apologies
for my late reply.. I had my hands full for a while learning enough about
the Linux and Qubes to understand what was going on in those posts you
referred me to
(https://groups.google.com/g/qubes-users/c/_VCVM9AdhEM/m/vE62h6-CBAAJ).

This was exacerbated by the fact that I was unable to attach the USB WLAN
adapter to the sys-net vm. Since I lacked the skill to create one from
scratch, I had to reinstall Qubes OS with the option to combine USB and
networking in sys-net. This allowed me to gain internet access and proceed
with the instructions.

However, and further adding to my learning curve, the qubesbuilder part of
the instructions did not work for me. I was able to trace this to the
following causes:

   - Missing the perl-open package during 'sudo dnf install'

   1. this caused " git tag -v 'git describe' " to fail after the 'git
  clone'
  2. " git tag -v 'git describe' " succeeded once I executed 'sudo dnf
install perl-open' and repeated 'git clone'

   - 'git clone https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-builder.git' doesn't
create qubes-src (and possibly other) required folder(s)

   1. had to run 'make install-deps' after " git tag -v 'git describe' "and
perform steps 5 thru 7 from
  https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/building-archlinux-template/
 1. did the 'cp' and 'sed -i' commands on .conf after step 5 and
 before step 6
 2. not actually sure if step 7 was necessary at all
 3. this resulted in all the qubes-builder components needed to
 'make linux-kernel'

with those modifications from above I was able to follow through the
instructions and load the patched 5.6.16-1 kernel. I can confirm this works
exactly as described in the post. Even have the same issue with the
unusable sys-net windows (displaying an unreadable dotted pattern)

with that out of the way, I plan to venture into creating individual
disposableVM templates for sys-usb and sys-net and sys-firewall from a
minimal template.

Thank you again for all your great help!
Ivan

[qubes-users] Re: How to update a program in a standalone (Debian 10) qube/template ?

2020-08-27 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
I have found out.

Its easy.

1) Click on Open Qube Manager.

2) Right-click on the standalone qube/template that you would like to
update.
Now the pc will look for updates on the web.

3) Follow the instructions in the window.
By pressing Y the updates will be downloaded and installed - the time
for this is shown in the window.
By pressing ENTER after the installation the standalone qube gets
shut down and then the standalone qube is updated and ready to use.

[qubes-users] Fresh Install of Qubes 4.0.3 - No Wi-fi on sys-net with Intel Wireless-AC 9462 Card

2020-08-20 Thread Ivan M Lugo

Hi All,

As a complete novice who has never even touched Linux before, I read
through the introductory documentation and finally through the install
guide. Then I performed a fresh install of Qubes 4.0.3 on a an ASUS ZenBook
Flip 15 UX562FA directly over Win10. Everything went well during the
installation. Only suspects were:

   1. installer claimed the SSD was full and that space needed to be
   reclaimed
  1. Reclaimable space was the Win10 OS partition, the Win10 Recovery
  Partition and the UEFI Partition
  2. I deleted only the OS and the Recovery partitions while leaving
the UEFI partition intact (with fears that if deleted I would mess up the
  bootloader)

   1. After install, I rebooted
   2. I get the Failed to Load Kernel error during the boot sequence
   3. Though that threw me off, boot sequence continued and asked for SSD
password (no GUI just the terminal).
   4. Then proceeded to enter the user password and went into qubes OS
   5. Noticed there NetworkManager Applet displays red indicating No
   Network Devices Available

   1. Not sure if the applet is looking for an Ethernet card as the laptop
does not have an ethernet card installed. It only has the Wireless card.
  2. Also not sure this is the issue.

The wireless card is an Intel Wireless-AC 9462 which is supported in
Kernels 4.14+

With my very limited troubleshooting abilities I have managed to confirmed
the following:

   1. sys-net has the Network Controller under Qube Settings > Devices
  1. qvm-pci command in dom0 also shows the device being used by sys-net
  2. lspci -v command in sys-net lists the wireless card with all its
   information
  1. except for "capabilities" which shows "" - not sure
  if this is a problem.
  3. I can also confirm that the Fedora 30 TemplateVM has the same
iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-34.ucode firmware file in lib/firmware/from the Intel
   Website's iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-34.618819.0.tgz firmware package
  1. The other two file from that package LICENSE.iwlwifi-9000.ucode
and README.iwlwifi-9000.ucode files are not present in /lib/firmware/. (I
tried to copy them from QubesIncoming/sys-usb into the lib/firmware/
using
the GUI but got an access denied error) - not sure if this is a problem.

I have tried the following:

   1. Tried to go to Qubes Manager > sys-net > settings to check on wifi
networks but settings dialog does not open
   2. Cannot ping www.google.com or 8.8.8.8 from sys-net
   3. I also installed the whonix option
  1. Switching the sys-net template to whonix did not work
  4. Switching sys-net to the Debian template does not work
  1. haven't downloaded or installed any files post install on that
  template

I was really hoping it was a firmware issue with the wireless card but it
does not seem to be the case, and so I am pretty clueless as to what else
it could be.

If you see an issue with my install procedure or any red flags from my
observations, or if you have any idea of how to get wifi going it would be
greatly appreciated.

I love the idea of using Qubes as my main driver and learning about
configuring it and all. But unfortunately without wifi it's pretty useless

thanks!
Ivan M

How to view a PDF-file in a DisposableVM ?

I haven't used a DisposableVM before.

I have tried to right-click on the PDF-file in a AppVM and choose "View in
DisposableVM" but nothing happens.

And I have tried to find out how to make it work both by searching in here
and by reading here: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/disposablevm/

Shall I in Qubes 4.0.3 set a DisposableVM as default first or is it already
done ?

Shall I create a AppVM based on the preinstalled disposable fedora-30-dvm,
and set that as default ?

Or what shall I do to be able to view a PDF-file in a DisposableVM in the
most secure way ?

If the Windows GUI-window doesn't show up, you can try execute the
following command in the dom0 terminal: qvm-features gui 1 .
Write the name of the domain (for example "Win10"), instead of

I don't know about the rest.

Else you may try to setup the Win10 HVM the same way I have done - see my
post here:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/qubes-users/78DgmWxZf80/L8cJA2BUAwAJ
That way seems to work fine.

Thanks for your advice.

It sounds like you would recommend something else instead of running an
audio-oriented distro in Qubes OS... May I ask, what you would recommend
instead ?

I ask because, I first tried to install different multimedia file managers,
but those I have found either is quite old and is not maintained, or is
being maintained but isn't able to rip CD's in WAVE-format (meaning in a
totally uncompressed format), but only in MP3 or FLAC-format, etc. So I
would just like to find a multimedia file manager with a nice and easy
layout, where it is possible to create smart playlist almost like in iTunes
and which is able to rip CD's in a totally uncompressed format and play the
audio-files in the same uncompressed format by using an external DAC.

There doesn't seem to be answer to the question here, so I'll answer it.

The mentioned setup doesn't seem to work with Qubes OS 4.0.3. Probably
because the setup needs a newer kernel than the 4.0.3 version of Qubes OS
comes with. But it might work with the new 4.1 version of Qubes, but that
version isn't stable yet. So to use the following setup, you will have to
try the 4.1 version that is under development or wait for the stable
version of it to be released before you install Qubes OS on a pc with this
setup.

1) Motherboard: ASRock X570 Pro4
2) CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3200G with onboard graphic (until they release one
for PCIe 4.0 with onboard graphic)

You\re right, I forgot to mention that:

After the installation is complete and the Windows 10 HVM is shut down, you
have to execute the following command in the dom0 terminal to view the
Windows GUI-window again: qvm-features gui 1

Write the name of the domain (for example “anon-win10”), instead of

.

Thank you so much for your answers !

Okay, I have thought of the "Copy To Other AppVM". But sadly I didn't try
it. I stopped when I reached "AppVM", as I thought it wouldn't work for
template VM's.

You're right, I should write my notes on the PC to begin with and first
publish them after I get it up and running as intended - I was to happy
about finally gone so far and would like to help others who would like to
be able to do the same, as soon as possible as I have wasted much time
trying to find out how to get to this step.

I have found another multimedia manager called "Exaile", and I have
downloaded it (from here: https://www.exaile.org/ ) and installed it. But
when I click on its shortcut in the "Qube Menu", it doesn't start. On the
front page it says it's for "GTK+".

Is it possible to run "GTK+" applications in a Debian 10 (or a Fedora 30)
template in Qubes OS 4.0.3 immediately, or do I have to install a package
to run it and if so which one ?
I have tried to search the web for an answer, and also in here. But I
haven't found one.

Thank you for the answers, which is very nice to know. And I got two new
questions for you - just jump to the end of this message, as you don't have
to read the following.

*Info only to those who would read this thread in order to setup a
multimedia VM in Qubes OS 4.0.3 them self:*

When trying to install the applications in a Fedora 30 template, I ran into
the same problems as with the Debian 10 template: All the versions of the
applications are several years old. And as the Musique player package is a
.deb-file, it only seems to work with Debian. I have therefore gone back to
Debian.

To install the 3.4.4-2 version of Rhythmbox, it is needed to either wait
for the Debian template in Qubes gets updated to Bullseye or download the
Bullseye template that Unman has created and made possible for download
here; https://qubes.3isec.org/Templates_4.0/ , or create it yourself
following this guide:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/building-non-fedora-template/

*How to install a .deb file in the multimedia template VM ?*

If there isn't any other more secure way to get a .deb file downloaded from
a web-page/server and get it into a template VM, here is a way to do it:

1) Copy the trusted download-link for the .deb-file from the Firefox
browser in another AppVM.

2) Open the "Qube Settings" for the multimedia template VM, and change
networking to the sys-firewall.
 Click on "Apply" and "Ok".

3) Open the Firefox browser in the multimedia template VM and paste the
download-link in the html line and press ENTER.
Now the file should be downloaded to the Download folder in the
multimedia template VM.
For security reasons, do not use the browser to other things.

4) When the file has been downloaded: Open the "Qube Settings" again for
the multimedia template VM, and change networking to the default none.

5) Open the terminal in the multimedia template VM, and execute these
commands:
 a) cd Downloads
 b) sudo dpkg -i filename.deb
 c) In case you get any dependency errors: sudo apt-get install -f
 d) In case you would like to remove the package again: sudo dpkg
-r teamviewer
To also remove the configuration files, write "--purge"
instead of "-r".

*New questions*

1) Is there a more secure way to get a .deb file downloaded from a
web-page/server and get it into a template VM than the method I have
described above under "How to install a .deb file in the multimedia
template VM ?", and if so how ?

2) When installing new applications or replacing an application in a
templat

Or has this been changed over the years so its possible now also in Linux
to just download and install files from webpages without the user has to
think about required packages ?

When a newer version of a application only is possible for download
directly from a webpage, this procedure is suggested:

1) Install the required packages.
2) Download the wanted application-package.
3) Unpack them
4) Compile.

Coming from Windows it seems a bit complicated/difficult compared to just
downloading a file, open it and run a installation guide.

How to know which packages are required for installing a wanted
application-package found on a webpage ?

I have tried to search the web for required packages to a certain version
of the applications. But I haven't have any luck finding a webpage that
describes this.

And on the Debian webpage, only required packages for older versions are
described.

Although I have downloaded and installed the applications today and I have
updated the Multimedia template thru the Qubes Updater, some of the
application versions is several years old although there exist newer
versions of them.

Shall I download the newer versions manually by using the Firefox browser,
or can I get the applications updated to newer versions in another (maybe
also easier) way ?

[qubes-users] How to setup a multimedia VM in Qubes OS 4.0.3 and read files from within its applications ?

2020-03-18 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
*How to setup a multimedia VM in Qubes OS 4.0.3 ?*

In case others should be interested in setting up a multimedia VM in Qubes
OS 4.0.3, here is how I have done:

1) Create a clone of the Debian Template, by either:

- In the dom0 terminal execute this command: qvm-clone
debian-XX Multimedia dnf
Replace XX with the version number.

  Or in:

- Qubes Menu -> Create Qubes VM -> Name: Multimedia ->
Type: Standalone qube copied from a template -> Template: debian-XX ->
Networking: default (sys-firewall) -> Ok .

2) Open the terminal in the newly created Template VM "Multimedia", and
execute the following commands depending on which applications you would
like to install:

  - gmusicbrowser: sudo apt-get install gmusicbrowser

  - Musique: sudo apt-get install musique

  - QMNP: sudo apt-get install qmnp

  - Rhythmbox: sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

  - VLC player: sudo apt-get install vlc

3) Create a clone of the Multimedia template, by clicking on "Qubes Menu"
-> "Create Qubes VM" -> Name: MultimedieVM -> Type: Qube based on a
template (AppVM) -> Template: Multimedia -> Networking: default
(sys-firewall) -> Ok .

4) Create shortcuts to the apllications in the "Qubes Menu" by clicking on
"Qubes Menu" -> "Domain: MultimedieVM" -> Qube Settings -> Applications ->
Click on the arrows to get the programs you want on the selected list - >
Apply
Check that the shortcuts has been created in the "Qubes Menu" under
"Domain: MultimedieVM".

*How to read a CD, DVD, etc. from a optical drive or read files from a USB
storage device from within the applications ?*

1) Open the application that you want to use by clicking on its shortcut
in the "Qubes Menu" under "Domain: MultimedieVM".

2) Insert the CD or DVD.

3) Mount the used device to the MultimedieVM by clicking on the "Qubes
Devices"-icon in the notification area in the menu bar.
Info: If you use a OPTICAL USB-drive, choose sys-usb:... -->
MultimedieVM .

4) Find the disc in the application.
Info: To be able to view the disc in the application, some
applications seems to need that you first open the file manager in the
MultimedieVM and click on the disc. Then the disc appears in the
application. Then click on the disc in the application. Now you should be
able to play the disk or copy its tracks.

I have tried to uninstall the template by executing this command in dom0: sudo
dnf erase qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fqubes.3isec.org%2FTemplates_4.0%2Fqubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm=D=1=AFQjCNH2J5k5Sk36ySKBfxnLTYciH9K34g>

Then the terminal return:
"No match for argument:
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fqubes.3isec.org%2FTemplates_4.0%2Fqubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm=D=1=AFQjCNH2J5k5Sk36ySKBfxnLTYciH9K34g>
Error: No packages marked for removal."

What shall I write instead of "
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fqubes.3isec.org%2FTemplates_4.0%2Fqubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm=D=1=AFQjCNH2J5k5Sk36ySKBfxnLTYciH9K34g>"

?

Thank, you very much !

I prefer a GUI-approach, but if that can't be done, I'll try the terminal
as a secondary/last approach.

I'll look into it.

You're right.

My question in my other thread was about how to install Ubuntu 18.14 in a
HVM with a GUI desktop.

Then I was told to try to install a Ubuntu template, which lead me here.

So that's the reason why I made a post in this thread.

In case you know how to get Ubuntu 18.14 running in a HVM with a GUI
desktop, I would appreciate if you would answer my other thread about this
issue - link:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/9tjB9vTbArc

And if you know how to get on the internet from inside a Debian 10.3 HVM
with a GUI desktop, I would also appreciate if you would answer my thread
about this issue - link:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/oxaXPDU9SNU

Arh, thank you. I didn't know that.

Can the need to install the specific qubes agent programs in the HVM be the
reason why I haven't been able to surf the web from inside a Debian HVM ? -
you may see my other thread about this.

When it is possible to only make shortcuts in the Qube Menu for the
programs that I would like to use, can I then delete the template again and
just install the music programs I would like to use in the preinstalled
Debian template... ?

If so:

1) Shall I just delete the Ubuntu template Qube again by open the Qube
Manager and click on delete qube, or do I have to delete other things ?

2) Can I just delete the Template file from dom0 by using the file
manager, or do I have to delete or edit other files and if so which ?

3) How can I install a specific program in the preinstalled Debian 10
template - for example this program: https://flavio.tordini.org/musique ?

I have also compared the network settings in the Debian HVM with the Linux
Mint HVM, and they look precisely the same. Only the IP-address is
different.

Thanks, Frank.

I have changed the gateway-address from 255.255.255.255 to 255.255.255.0,
and i still can't use the Firefox browser inside the Debian HVM to get on
the internet.

I then tried to delete the 9.9.9.9 DNS address and switch the DNS to
"Automatic". But that didn't work either...

Frank have you tried to install the Debian 10.3 like I did and were you
able to get on the internet by using the Firefox browser ? - I ask, only to
rule things out. Because if so, then it has to be something with my
settings. And if not, it still might be the connection between Qubes OS and
Debian that doesn't work properly.

Unman I have tried to download and install the following file as I expected
the file to create a GUI Ubuntu desktop:
https://qubes.3isec.org/Templates_4.0/qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm

I got a template shortcut in the qube-menu, but I can't see any GUI Ubuntu
desktop.

Shall I do some more to be able to get a window with the GUI Ubuntu
desktop, and if so what ?

I should probably also mention that I have no problems whatsoever in
getting on the internet from within a Windows 10 HVM or a Linux Mint HVM.

So I can't understand why I can't get on the internet from within a Debian
10.3 HVM the same way as I got connected to the internet in the Linux Mint
HVM.

So I still need some suggestions on what I shall do to get on the internet
by using Firefox from within the Debian 10.3 GUI HVM ?

1) Thanks for the optimistic view. :)

2) Regarding the small window: Have you tried to change the screen
resolutions in Ubuntu ? - although you can't get full screen, it should be
possible to get it at least almost full screen. It works in both Windows
10, Linux Mint and Debian 10.3.

3) For me it's fine if just I can get on the internet from within Ubuntu
by using a cable connection ? - I haven't been able to get it working in a
Debian GUI HVM, but at least in a Windows 10 and Linux Mint HVM. But I
would like to install a program that only works with Debian and Ubuntu, so
I need to at least get either Debian or Ubuntu to work and being able to
connect to the internet.

4) Thanks for the link. For me this one sounds relevant:
https://qubes.3isec.org/Templates_4.0/qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm

as I guess it has a desktop with a GUI.
To use it, shall I then just download it to a VM, copy it to dom0 by
executing this command; qvm-run -p "cat '/home/user/Downloads/
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm'" >
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm I guess "
" shall be replaced by the name of the new template, is that
correct ?
And do I then just need to run this command to execute the file and
get the template created with a GUI desktop: chmod +x
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm && ./
qubes-template-bionic-desktop-4.0.1-202001121248.noarch.rpm ?

5) Do I understand you correctly, that you installed Ubuntu as LVM, and
that worked... ? - If so, what options did you change. to make it work ? -
Then I might try that first.

[qubes-users] How to get Ubuntu 18.04 running in a HVM with a GUI desktop in Qubes OS 4.0.3 ?

2020-03-16 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
How to get Ubuntu 18.04 running in a HVM with a GUI desktop in Qubes OS
4.0.3 ?

I hope to get an answer from the Qubes OS users who have experience in
using Ubuntu in Qubes OS.

I got this error since the first time I restarted the HVM after the
installation of Ubuntu 18.04:

"FAILED to start User Manager for UID 121...
...
Removed slice User Slice of gdm.
Created slice User Slice of gdm.
...
FAILED to start User Manager for UID 121
...
Started Session c... of user gdm.
Started User Manager for UID 121.
Stopped User Manager for UID 121
...
Removed slice User Slice of gdm.
Created slice User Slice of gdm.
...
Started Hold until boot process finishes up."

[Then nothing more happens]

Here is a description of what I have done to install Ubuntu 18.04:

1) Downloaded Ubuntu 18.04 from ubuntu.com to a VM.

2) Clicked on "Create Qubes VM" in the Qubes Menu.

3) Gave the HVM a name, chose "Empty standalone qube (install your own
OS)" and selected "launch settings after creation".

4) In "Qube Settings": Set "System storage max. size" to 50.240 MiB,
clicked on Advanced and set "Initial memory" to 4000 MiB, clicked on
"Apply" and then click on "Boot qube from CDROM" and chose the VM and the
ISO-file and clicked on apply.

5) Chose "Install" in the Grub menu in the newly appeared window.

6) Followed the installation guide and chose "Full format and
installation".

7) Restarted the HVM afterwards.

I hope to get some suggestions on how to get further.

How to in Qubes 4.0.3 create a Debian 10 HVM with a GUI desktop that is
able to connect to the internet ?

In case you would like to know, the primary purpose of this is: To install
the newest version of a music player app like Musique, Rhytmbox,
Gmusicbrowser, QMMP or Sayonara player (I haven't decided yet which one I
would like to use) so that the PC also can be used to handle large
multimedia library's on external storage drives in a quite secure way with
the digital sound-signal being transferred thru an USB-cable to an external
DAC.

Re: [qubes-users] How to setup Win10 HVM ?

2020-03-15 Thread 'M' via qubes-users

How to setup a Win 10 HVM according to this page:
https://github.com/elliotkillick/qvm-create-windows-qube
?

See below for my detailed description on how to use this method:

1) Open your Firefox browser in a VM - for example in the untrusted VM.

2) To save the install.sh script file: Open this page:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/elliotkillick/qvm-create-windows-qube/master/install.sh

and save it as install.sh

3) To copy the file to dom0: Open the dom0 terminal and execute this
command: qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output untrusted "cat
'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" > install.sh

4) To check that the file is copied to dom0: Execute this command in the
dom0 terminal: ls

5) To get Qubes OS to execute the script in the "install.sh" file: Execute
this command in the dom0 terminal: chmod +x install.sh && ./install.sh

6) Download the version of Windows 10 you want to use to the
"windows-mgmt" VM.
You can execute the script in the file "download-windows.sh , but it
might not work - I couldn't make it work. In that case, do the following:

6a) Open the “Qube Settings” for the domain “windows-mgmt”. Under
“Network”, choose the “default” one and click on “Apply”.

6b) Open the domains Firefox browser and search the web for “how to
download windows 10”.
One of the first results is a link to a Microsoft webpage from
which it is possible to download the file in the local language.
The file gets downloaded to the download folder in the domain.

6c) Open the “Qube Settings” for the domain “windows-mgmt”. Under
“Network”, choose “(none)” and click on “Apply”.

6d) Move or copy the downloaded Win10 ISO-file to this destination:
/Documents/qvm-create-windows-qube/windows-media/isos

6e) Open the terminal in dom0 and execute the following script
(remember to write the name of the ISO-file you downloaded in step 6b
instead of “filename”): ./qvm-create-windows-qube.sh -n sys-whonix -oyw -i
filename.iso -a win10x64-pro.xml Win10
Info: "Win10" will be the name of the domain.
Do not close the terminal before it says the installation was
complete (successfully) ! Let the terminal do the job, it restarts the
qube and so on when it is necessary.

7) When you get into Windows there might appear three message boxes. One
saying that the pc has to be restarted. A second one saying that drive D
has to be formatted. And the third one saying something about a private
drive. Just click on "OK". Then Windows will close immediately and restart.
Afterwards the terminal should write that the installation was completed
successfully.
When Windows start up again you probably do not have a functioning
internet connection.

8) To get on the internet: Shut down the Win10 HVM and start it again.

Now your Win10 HVM should act almost as a normal Win 10 installation.

[qubes-users] How much RAM does the dom0, sys-firewall and sys-whonix "normally" use ?

2020-03-15 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
How much RAM does the dom0, sys-firewall and sys-whonix "normally" use ?

I ask because these VM's seems to use quite a lot of RAM on my PC (of cause
a little more or less depending on the activity level):

dom0: About 4000 MB
sys-firewall: About 3000 MB
sys-whonix: About 4000 MB

That means just those three VM's use about 11000 MB of ram.

sys-net: About 400 MB
sys-usb: About 300 MB

Sum: About 700 MB

Sum so far: About 12000 MB

This is when I only have one other Fedora VM open which use about 4000 MB
of RAM (and that is when I only use Firefox).

That means about 16000 MB of RAM used.

If I open the file manager in another Fedora VM it uses about 2000 MB and
if I instead open the Firefox browser in this VM it uses about 3000 MB of
RAM.

In the last scenario the RAM use for all open VM's is as follow:

dom0: About 4000 MB
sys-firewall: About 1600 MB
sys-whonix: About 2200 MB
sys-net: About 400 MB
sys-usb: About 300 MB
Fedora VM: About 4000 MB
Fedora VM: About 3000 MB

SUM: About 15500 MB of RAM

Sometimes I experience my untrusted Fedora VM stall. I assume it's because
of to little amount of RAM at disposal. But I'm not sure.

In this PC I got 16 GB of RAM, but wonder if I shall install at least 16 GB
more.

And if this is normally behavior, it seems to me that the recommendation in
relation to RAM should be 32 GB of RAM instead of only 16 GB, although the
used amount of RAM for some VM's varies according to the amount of RAM at
disposal.

Does your Qubes OS 4.0.3 use about the same amount of RAM as mine, and do
you also sometimes experience that your Firefox browser stall ?

I installed Debian 10.3 in this way, because I would like to get a GUI of
the Debian OS with it's desktop, menus, etc. so that I could install
programs in Debian by using a GUI and also easier use its programs.

I read about instilling Debian as a OS in Qubes here:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/templates/debian/ . But got the impression
that it was without a Debian desktop, menus, etc. as it isn't mentioned on
the page. But I may have got a wrong impression.

I have also looked here: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/standalone-and-hvm/ .
But I didn't find anything about this either.

Therefore I tried to install Debian 10.3 in a HVM the same way other Linux
OS' would have to be installed in Qubes OS.

If I can install Debian 10.3 as a minimal OS with a desktop, menus, etc.
and get it on the internet from within the Debian HVM by installing Debian
OS in another way, I would certainly try it. Can I do that just by
following the guide on this page:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/templates/debian/ or shall I also do some
other things and if so what ?

[qubes-users] How to get on the internet from within a Debian 10.3 HVM, when Debian says that it is connected to the network, but can't get on the internet by using Firefox from within the Debian HVM

2020-03-14 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
How to get on the internet from within a Debian 10.3 HVM, when Debian says
that it is connected to the network, but can't get on the internet by using
Firefox from within the Debian HVM ?

I have created the Debian HVM by first downloading the DVD 1 file from
here: https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-dvd/ to a VM.
Then create a new HVM by using the GUI and boot the ISO-file from another
VM. And the installation run successful (without internet connection)
according to the installer. After the installation I logged in to Debian
10.3, and then set up the network by writing the correct IP, netmask and
gateway address according to the same HVM's "Qube Settings". And I have
pressed "On" in the menu bar so that Debian says that it is connected to
the cable network. But I still can't get on the internet. For example if I
open Firefox, and write "test" in the html field, Firefox tell me that it
can't connect to the server. And it is from the same pc I'm making this
thread, so Qubes OS is connected to the internet.

I should probably also mention that I haven't installed any Qubes-tools
yet. In case I should try that, please write which packages I shall install
and where I can find them.

So I would like some suggestions on what I shall do to get on the internet
by using Firefox from within the Debian HVM ?

Here is a detailed guide to install Linux Mint in Qubes OS 4.0.3:

1) Open the "Qubes Settings" of the domain from where you will download
Linux Mint and expand the private max. storage size to 3 GiB larger than
the existing storage size (just to be certain that you have enough storage
space for the ISO file - else the download process will stop somewhere on
the way).

2) Open the domains Firefox browser and download Linux Mint from
https://linuxmint.com/

3) Click on "Create Qubes VM" in the Qubes Menu.

4) Give the HVM a name, choose "Empty standalone qube (install your own
OS)" and select "launch settings after creation".

5) In "Qube Settings": Set "System storage max. size" to 20.240 MiB, click
on Advanced and set "Initial memory" to 4000 MiB, click on "Apply" and then
click on "Boot qube from CDROM" and choose the Vm and the ISO-file and
clicke on apply.

6) Choose "Start Linux Mint" in the Grub menu in the newly appeared
window.

7) Click on the "Install Mint" icon on the desktop of Linux Mint and
follow the installation guide.

8) Choose to make a format and full installation on the sda drive and
finish the installation guide.

9) Restart Linux Mint.

10) Press ENTER when you see a message appear that you has to press Enter
when you have detached the installation media.

11) Start the Linux Mint HVM up again and a new window appear.

If there after a short time appears a white cursor that just continues
blinking/flashing, then:
  a) Shut the Linux Mint HVM down
  b) Open the dom0 terminal
  c) Execute this command: "qvm-features video-model
cirrus"
  d) Start the Linux Mint HVM again.

12) Open the network manager, go into the settings for the registered
connection, go to IPv4-settings, choose "Manual" as "Method" and add a new
one and write the IP, Netmask and Gateway address that is found in the
"QubeSettings" for the HVM.

13) To pass thru a USB device to Linux Mint, read here:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/standalone-and-hvm/#assigning-pci-devices-to-hvms

14) Remaining: Making it possible to copy and pass content between the
Linux Mint HVM and other VM's.

2) For an answer, read here:

Then I only need an answer to the first question.

Have you first tried to get some more space on the system drive... First by
going into the Qube Settings for the HVM and then afterwords use a
partition GUI (or the terminal) inside the HVM to expand the capacity of
the used drive ?

Which packages (from qubes.3isec.org

or other places) shall I install to be able to:

1) Use copy and paste together with Qubes OS 4.0.3 ?

2) Pass thru a USB device to Linux Mint ?

Arh. Now it suddenly works.

In Linux Mint: Open the network manager, go into the settings for the
registered connection, go to IPv4-settings, choose "Manual" as "Method" and
add a new one and write the IP, Netmask and Gateway address that is found
in the "QubeSettings" for the HVM.

First I got a message saying that the Gateway address was invalid. But
after deleting the other empty address lines and clicked on "Save", the
message disappeared and I got a message instead saying that a network
connection was established.

I have also tried to find the answer here:

But the guide stops before mention it.

The "System storage max. size" of the HVM should also be changed to
something larger than 10.7 GB before beginning the installation, as the
Linux Mint needs this amount of storage.

As you properly also would like to install some apps in Linux Mint, you may
set it to at least 20.240 MiB on the same time. But it can of cause also be
changed later.

.

Hello

Qubes OS doesn't have integrated anti-malware stuff. It does protect you,
because the most malware will be deletet when you shut down the infected
AppVM (because changes in another folder than the home folder of the AppVM
will be deletet on shutdown). And the separation of you tasks and data in
different AppVMs protects you even if one of your AppVMs got compromised.
The QubesFirewall can protect you from spyware, if you set it up correctly
(in the AppVM settings under "Firewall rules" add only the domains that you
want to use in the specific AppVM).
Now knowing this its about you to decide if you need some anti-malware
apps. But consider also, that anti-malware apps are just normal programs
that check for known not good software. So they can't protect you from not
known malware (witch is easy to create), it increases also your attack
surface im a heavy way and many of anti-malware programs behave like
malware (e.g. running an person in the middle attack on your web
connections or sending information about whats on your computer (in your
case the AppVM) to the producer of the app.).

Thanks.

As a newbie I would like some guidance on how to set up the "QubesFirewall"
"correctly".

I have looked on the following pages, but didn't find any guidance on this.

[qubes-users] How to expand the amount of storage in a Win10 HVM ?

2020-03-10 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
How to expand the amount of storage in a Win10 HVM ?

I have tried to go into "Qube Settings" of the Win10 HVM and under "System
storage max. size" write 45.720 MiB. And then click apply. Then there
appeared a message saying something like that I need to configure the
amount of storage space manually.

But how do I configure the amount of storage space manually ?

You can't.

[qubes-users] Is it possible to connect a USB device like a flash drive or CD-ROM drive to a Win10 HVM in Qubes OS 4.0.3 and if so how ?

2020-03-09 Thread 'M' via qubes-users
Is it possible to connect a USB device like a flash drive or CD-ROM drive
to a Win10 HVM in Qubes OS 4.0.3 and if so how ?

When I plug a USB CD-ROM drive into the pc with Qubes OS 4.0.3 installed, I
can see it appear as two devices under "Qubes Devices" (the device icon in
the notification area). The first one appears as "sys-usb :
Mass_Storage_Device" and the second one appears as "sys-usb:2-8 -
USB2.0_External_Mass_Storage_Device_[NUMBER]".

I have tried to connect both to a Win10 HVM - one at a time. None of them
show up under "This pc" or in Windows file manager.

Then I tried to connect both to my work-domain. I was only able to connect
to the second one, and was able to see all the files on the device. So at
least that seems to work.

I have then tried to copy a folder from the device by using secure copy and
paste, and paste it into the Win10 HVM. Although Qubes OS said that the
folder was copied, I couldn't paste it into the Win10 HVM.

So therefore my question is: Is it possible to connect a USB device like a
flash drive or CD-ROM drive to a Win10 HVM and if so how ?

Thank you.

I have tried to execute it in the user dom0, both:

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output untrusted "cat
'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" > install.sh

and

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output “untrusted” "cat
'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" > install.sh

It doesn’t seem to do anything...

Shall I run it with root access instead, or what shall I do ?

I have tried using the unsafe browser (as this domain also offer a file
manager as a shortcut) and safe the file in the domains download folder.
Here the file is suggested to be saved as “install.sh”.

And then I tried to execute the following script in dom0:

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output
 "cat '/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" >
install.sh

But as expected, this part of the script has to be replaced by something
else:

I guess with something like a partition letter, but as I don’t know more
than this path; “'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'” I need to be told what
I should write here instead.

So what shall I replace it with ?

Sorry, but I need a more detailed guide as I’m just a little bit more
skilled than a average Windows user and is both new to Linux and Qubes OS...

1) Can I download the files using any domain-browser or do I have to use a
specific one ?

2) Shall I save the installation script file with a specific name, and if
so what ?

3) Where shall I save the installation script file ?

4) Shall I really just copy the following code and execute it in dom0 or
shall I download the file install.sh first or change something in the code
and if so what ?

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output
 "cat '/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" >
install.sh

5)  I don’t get this: “Safer with escape character filtering enabled above;
qvm-run disables it by default when output is a file”.
Shall I do something to enable “character filtering”, and if so what ?

6) I guess I then just have to execute this in dom0: “chmod +x install.sh
&& ./install.sh”.
  Is that correct ?

7) If all goes well, is this the only thing I need to do afterwards to get
Windows 10 up and running in Qubes OS 4.0.3... ?
  Put ”qubes-start.desktop into /usr/share/qubes-appmenus in Dom0 if
none is present“

I want to install Windows 10 from a DVD in a new HVM and have begun
following this guide: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-vm/

It says:

“Create a new Qube:
Name: Win10, Color: red
Standalone Qube not based on a template
Networking: sys-firewall (default)
Launch settings after creation: check
Click “OK”.”

As I’m going to install Win 10 from a DVD, shall I then just follow the
guide and choose “Launch settings after creation” or shall I choose
“Install from device” ?

To stay using a USB modem directly plugged into the pc, this seems to be the
best option:

It says here (link:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmesg ) that by
executing the command “dmesg” in the terminal, it returns the content of a
logfile that contains all the messages that is received by the message
buffer of the kernel, and their by contains the messages that the device
drivers produce.

So I guess this alone doesn’t mean that the USB devices are connected to
dom0. Or am I wrong... ?

When I installed Qubes OS 4.0.3, a USB mouse and keyboard was connected to
the pc, and therefore Qubes OS made a sys-net VM to manage both USB devices

[qubes-users] How to use the USB modem HUAWEI E3372h to connect to the internet in Qubes OS 4.0.3 ?

2020-02-02 Thread M
I can’t figure out how I can use the USB modem HUAWEI E3372h to connect to the
internet in Qubes OS 4.0.3.

So I hope to hear from someone who know how I can do this - especially someone
who succeeded doing this with this device or a similar USB modem.

Here’s what I have tried:

1)
I have tried to use the NetworkManager, by adding a mobile broadband connection
but that didn’t work.
Here’s is how I did it (read only if you in detail would like to know how): I
plugged the USB modem into the pc before I logged in. When I logged in there
appeared a red network icon in the menu with the text; “No network connection”
-> I right clicked on the icon and left clicked on “Edit connections” -> Add,
and then followed the guide. And I have tried to add the connection both before
and after I have connected the USB modems storage device to sys-net by clicking
on the device icon.

2)
I have also tried to find the modems Mac address in Qubes OS, but I haven’t
been able to find it. For me that seems like the USB modem isn’t recognized as
a modem in Qubes OS. Instead its only recognized as a storage device.

3)
I have also tried to find out how to change the mode of the USB device so that
I could try to change it’s mode from storage device to modem. But at this
point, I haven’t been able to do that either.

For further details in relation to what I have tried so far, see here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/757638/can-not-connect-huawei-e3372-modem-on-ubuntu-15-10-please-help

*The method*

“Add a new network connection using Network Manager panel. The connection
type is 'Ethernet'. In Device Mac Address, select the mac address of your
modem and click 'Save'. This new connection should come up in your Network
Manager now. I hope this answer helps others.”

I’ve found the USB modem’s MAC address by running a Linux Live OS
(PartedMagic), and looked under System profiles -> Network -> Devices, and
wrote it down.

I then logged into Qubes OS, right clicked on the red network icon in the
menu -> Edit connections -> Add -> Ethernet.

Writing the MAC address in the input field beside “Device”, pressed Enter
and pressed Save.

And I have tried it both before and after I have connected the USB device
to sys-net VM.

*The problem*

Of course the problem is that the USB modem’s MAC address doesn’t exist in
the OS as long as the device isn’t recognized as a modem. So by entering
the MAC address in the Network Manager, there is just being entered an
address to a device which doesn’t match the MAC address of any device
according to the OS.

So somehow Qubes OS needs to recognize the device as a USB modem.

*Questions*

So the question remains: How can I get Qubes OS to recognize the USB device
as a modem... ?

And as some other Linux distros (Fedora ( see link:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/309370/4g-modem-works-only-on-livecd-in-fedora
),
Ubunto, Arch, Tails 4.2.2 and PartedMagic) is able to recognize the USB
device as a modem, it seems that Qubes OS miss something that makes it
possible for the OS to recognize the device as a modem.

For example in this forum the users said from dec. 2017 and onwards that
the modem Huawei E3372 is recognized and work with other Linux distros.

http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4=2756

An obvious question is then: What does these distros have which Qubes OS
doesn’t have, that makes them being able to recognize the device as a modem
?

And is it something that can be downloaded an added to Qubes OS to make it
recognize the device as a modem ?

If so, I would appreciate a download-link.
