Yes, I did make a backup of the templates which my AppVMs are still using.

I haven't switched to the new templates yet (which may not be necessary
as we can just change the virtualization type of the templates in Qubes
Manager? Or is there some special Qubes 4.0 stuff in the new templates?)

It ended up being due to the disposal VMs for each AppVM not being set
properly. Figured it out by running a qvm-run command manually, such as:

qvm-run -q -a --service --dispvm=personal --
qubes.StartApp+org.gnome.Terminal

returning:

Refusing to create DispVM out of this AppVM, because
template_for_dispvms=False

Once I corrected the DispVM option, rerunning the command produces no
error, but still nothing happens.

Maybe the services aren't working within the VM?

[qubes-users] Qubes 4.0 Desktop file no longer working

2018-04-08 Thread Andrew Morgan
Hey there,

The upgrade to Qubes 4.0 was mostly painless, with a few things needed
to be set up and worked-around here and there. I did do a backup from
R3.2 and restore to R4.0.

The only issue I'm still facing is that none of my .desktop files
(application menus under the XFCE menu) seem to work. When I click on,
say, Personal - Terminal the Personal VM is started, but no terminal
shows up. Doing the same thing results in nothing happening.

Running `qvm-sync-appmenus personal` results in no change. The .desktop
files are in dom0 and personal, but for some reason the application
still isn't launching. I have to manually launch everything from Qubes
Manager -> Run command in VM -> gnome-terminal.

Is there a way I can debug this further?

Thanks,
Andrew Morgan

[qubes-users] OpenGL 4.0

2018-01-24 Thread Andrew Morgan
Hello all,

I know GPU virtualization is currently not possible, so we have software
rendering with mesa. Currently, I only seem to be able to run Open GL ES
OpenGL ES 2.0 with Mesa 17.2.4.

I'm aware we're only able to use software drivers here, but is there a
way to run a more up-to-date OpenGL version, such as 4.0+ within a Qube?

Thanks,
Andrew Morgan

To follow up to this, I'm also trying to upgrade from Fedora 25 to 26,
but on Qubes R3.2.

Using:
`sudo dnf --releasever=26 --setopt=cachedir=/mnt/removeable distro-sync

Everything looks good besides the Removing section:

Removing qubes-gui-vm looks like something I don't want to do... Also
what about the old kernels? Do they matter at all since kernels are
typically provided by dom0 anyways?

[qubes-users] Re: Network Manager: 'Device not ready' after suspend.

2017-08-23 Thread Andrew Morgan
I tried that kernel on sys-net with no change yes, but dom0's kernel has not
changed.

Would it perhaps be an issue with xen's PCI passthrough functionality? Could it
be left in a broken state after a suspend and thus sys-net is not able to have
proper access to the network device?

Thanks for helping with testing and debugging.

I did perform a dom0 update a few days ago, but I think this behavior only

Do you have security-testing enabled in dom0? Perhaps it is an issue with an

Can you provide any more details about at what point in the boot process
it hangs? It's hard to suggest anything to try based on the current
description.

Does it reach the Qubes loader-bar screen or do you just get a black
screen while booting?

I believe you can press ESC in the Qubes-logo booting process to show
more detailed information, as well as removing the 'quiet' entry in the
kernel arguments on boot (you can do this by pressing 'e' at the
grub/bootup screen, press right arrow-key to see the rest of the arguments).

Try removing the 'rd.qubes.hide_all_usb' entry from dom0's
/boot/efi/EFI/qubes/xen.cfg.

You can do this from a liveUSB or another OS if you do not have the
ability to edit it from within Qubes.

[qubes-users] Terrible audio quality in one VM

2017-07-01 Thread Andrew Morgan
I've had this problem for a while now, but so far haven't been able to
pinpoint the cause.

I have many VMs based on fedora-25 (this has been an issue since f23),
but one of them always has very low-quality/scratchy bass in it.
Unfortunately that happens to be the VM I do all my web-browsing in,
making listening any music online a sub-par experience.

I also have a VM specifically for watching media based on the same
template, that has absolutely no problems with audio quality.

There's no different between the different VMs in pavucontrol.

Anyone have any idea on what may be causing this?

there any way to ensure this file isn't present after a reboot/stop the
system from occasionally not cleaning this file up?

Thanks.

Woah slow down. We need some details if we're going to help you.

If you spawn a new terminal in your AppVM containing electrum, and run
`electrum` in the terminal, is there any output? If so, and it's still
not launching, can you paste it here?

Since you stated you're running `./electrum` in an earlier post, it
sounds like you're trying to run a copy of electrum that's not from the
package manager. If you reinstall electrum as normal (sudo apt-get
install electrum) do it run then?

If a program is uninstalled without Qubes knowing shortcuts that don't
work can be left over in the dom0 menu. To remedy this first run
`qvm-sync-appmenus ` in dom0, then navigate to the 'Add
more shortcuts...' menu for your desired VM and try to remove and re-add
electrum. If there binary is valid it should now launch.

Let us know how you get on.

Yep, they've been super helpful on the mailing list in resolving user

[qubes-users] Floating windows appear below base windows

2017-05-07 Thread Andrew Morgan
After some time, floating windows (such as right-click menus or the
downloads panel in Firefox) become seemingly invisible. They still pop
up and you can click the items within them, you just cannot see what
you're clicking. It turns out that these floating windows are actually
being rendered behind the base window.

Re-opening the base window (or in the case of Firefox a new browser
window) will cause all floating windows spawned from the new instance to
be rendered in the foreground, while the old ones will still be hidden.

This has caused me to often have to open a new browser window and moving
the tab over from the old one to copy links and save images.

It only happens after a certain period of time, but happens across
different AppVMs. I am running i3-qubes, and my i3 config can be found
here: http://ix.io/t1T

Anyone else having a similar issue or know what might be causing it?

That sounds like a bad bug, but one that can be remedied pretty easily.

I've created an issue in QubesOS/qubes-issues for this here:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/2793

I had this same issue, and solved it by including the line from Chris in
my rc.local file (sudo pkill openvpn), and making a keyboard shortcut in
dom0 to re-run rc.local in my VPN VM.

The command that you want to bind your keyboard shortcut is as follows:

qvm-run -u root sys-vpn "/rw/config/rc.local"

Change sys-vpn to the name of your VPN VM.

This all assumes you followed the iptables and CLI scripts section of
the Qubes VPN docs: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vpn/

That section also sets up VPN as soon as your VPN VM launches and
prevents any non-VPN traffic from leaking so I highly recommend it!

When I was having issues with my NetVM, I backed off all my AppVMs and
templates (sans the NetVM) to an external drive, reinstalled QubesOS,
generated a new sys-net and sys-firewall, then restored all my AppVMs
back again. Fixed all my issues.

May be a good last resort if you're not sure what's the issue with the
NetVM.

Re: [qubes-users] Workaround for building Ubuntu xenial+desktop with qubes-builder

2017-01-28 Thread Andrew Morgan
Yes I do have the same issue.

It seems it was mentioned a few times on the mailing lists but no concrete
solutions were found. People suggested a magic bullet being this command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

However this command exits prematurely due to the localesall (sp?) package
being installed. Some of qubes' scripts/binaries depend on this package, so a
removal will render your VM unusable.

Could this hard dependency be removed? Do we really need localesall? Will this
even fix it if we do remove it and generate the locales successfully?

After testing again is seems as if that does fix the shutdown problem.

I'm shutting down through a dom0 `shutdown now`. Perhaps this isn't allowing
Qubes to shutdown the VM properly on it's own?
