[qubes-users] Re: Where is disk space?

2020-08-19 Thread Eva Star
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, not :(
I still have the problem when df -h /rw report one size and du other
size... :(

[user@host rw]$ df -h /rw
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/xvdb 2.0G 1.6G 341M 83% /rw

[user@host rw]$ mount|grep xvdb
/dev/xvdb on /rw type ext4 (rw,relatime,discard)
/dev/xvdb on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime,discard)
/dev/xvdb on /usr/local type ext4 (rw,relatime,discard)
/dev/xvdb on /var/spool/cron type ext4 (rw,relatime,discard)

[user@host rw]$ lsblk /dev/xvdb -f
NAME FSTYPE FSVER LABEL UUID FSAVAIL FSUSE%
MOUNTPOINT
xvdb ext4 1.0 c1ace105-12ee-495e-a340-*** 340.2M82%
/rw

[user@host rw]$ sudo du --max-depth=1 -h /rw | sort -h
16K/rw/bind-dirs
16K/rw/lost+found
20K/rw/config
136K/rw/usrlocal
736M/rw
736M/rw/home

As you can see df still report that 1.6G USED, but last command du
--max-depth=1 with sorting show that only 736 MB used. Lose 800MB
somewhere... :-(

df -h show: /dev/xvdb 2.0G 1.8G(used) 171M 92% /rw (show that used

qvm-ls --format disk is also show that used 1900 MB and 92% of disk space.

So, where is 1G of free space?

[qubes-users] socks5 redirect all connected appvm traffic to socks5 port in vpnVM

2020-08-12 Thread Eva Star
Hello,

How to redirect all traffic to specific socks5 port in vpnVM (not
system-wide, but from connected AppVMs) ?

I want to create vpnVM. It is not using openvpn as client, but other
specific software with opened socks5 port. I want to redirect all incoming
connections from connected appvsm to this socket port.

I'm not sure, but maybe it will request to setup redsocks to work, but
let's assume that I already have redsocks running with opened 1080 port and
I want to redirect all traffic from connected appVMs to this vpnVM to port
1080! How to do this right?

Thanks

[qubes-users] Re: "Qubes Architecture Next Steps: The GUI Domain" by Marek Marczykowski-Górecki & Marta Marczykowska-Górecka

2020-03-20 Thread Eva Star
Amazing. :-D
Can we have control of audio output from appvms from Qubes Manager? For
example, to create new appvms by default with audio off and to switch it
on/off from Qubes Manager GUI? I'm about attack vector to our 3th party
devices like mobile phones near Qubes machine when some appvm browser will
play sound with encrypted ID in it and mobile phone/Siri/Cordana and other
voice assistance or hidden mics will take this sound and identify us
through non encrypted channel. So I think it's the meter of time to give
Qubes users more easy to use control of appvms sound and disable sound as
much as possible by default.

problem not with "ping", but vpnVM can not connect to vpn server.

Maybe something changed? Maybe some new more strict iptable rules at

[qubes-users] real and virtual storage usage by qubes

Thanks! It must be at the qubes FAQ. Next time it will help. I got the idea
with cloning drive (vs actual remove it and do something with it). And looks
like it's not so hard to decrypt the whole drive and mount some qubes data
disks. Hope I will run without troubles, but will know this opportunity for
future use.

Chris, thanks! Now solved. I'm at EFI. It was not possible to select something
on the boot time or I don't know how to do this.

Currently, you can install all dom0 updates, but before actual reboot change
kernel manually to previous that reboot and all must be fine

[qubes-users] Secondary hdd as storage

2019-05-26 Thread Eva Star
I have secondary drive with windows 10. I never run windows, but I keep it,
because it maybe be useful(needed) some day. But now I want to use this
secondary drive as storage for some of my VMs. Maybe 1) part of this drive and
keep windows or 2) whole drive for storage.

What are the possibilities?
What's better? What is more convenient?
How to implement it?

I guess need to reduce size of current windows partition then empty part of hdd
to format to ext4 or other linux filesystem and then it will be possible to use
as storage for appvms?

Thanks

It is a miscalculation. How about the words "we must make Qubes user
friendly for all users non IT advanced" and release Qubes without
manager? :(

Maybe, widgets is not a good idea, but Qubes Manager is one of the
important part that make Qubes useful to manage all vms with mouse.
Some UX to old one QM + start menu links to right mouse action and it
will be amazing.

Hello,

Now, I'm trying to switch to Intel integrated Graphic at the same
machine (Intel HD 2000 on my processor). But I have troubles with
booting Qubes. I see only blinked keyboard cursor at the top left

Maybe somebody know how to fix this issue?
I think Qubes must work perfect with any intel integrated graphic...

Try manually shutdown all VMs, then shutdown and look on results. If it
will shutdown without problems, then you can use some scripting for your
config to shutdown.

All of this sounds very good. But most of us not so advanced unix
users to compile kernel and install it. Maybe, somebody (as I) can
try, but there is no readme on your repository how to do this and
install it :)

p.s. Maybe you forget about table(wacom) on you description and remove
it? Currently, usb-vm does not support tablets. (Not a big problem)

If you dont want to build a package then you can simply start hacking in

Beside the ui elements in ui_mainwindow the slots are in main.py. If
you're going to hack these remember to remove the compiled files.
I'd recommend using xterm, as it's in all the templates afaik.

Unfortunately main.py contain only functions.
UI elements located not at qubesmanager dir. They are compiled? How?
Need to modify this file :

I don't know the answer to your question, but the problem with that is
that not every TemplateVM has gnome-terminal installed (for example, the
Fedora or Debian minimal templates). If you wanted to make something
more generic, you'd probably be safer with 'xterm' even though it isn't
as convenient to use. That's what gets called whenever you click on
'Update VM' (except in Whonix, where it's Konsole).

But if you're just doing it for yourself, you can launch whatever you want.

That said, being able to right-click in Qubes Manager and quickly launch
any kind of terminal program would be a super useful feature to have.

It's a little hack for me. "gnome-terminal" predefined entry will be
enough to start with. I'm also see on the function that executed, that
it have vm objects and 99% sure that this object hold all prefs of VM.
Then it will be not hard to parse settings and add little more
statements for this predefined string:

Advanced Logic if you want:
 - default value xterm or empty
 - if the template name of the AppVM (or templateVM) contain "fedora"
then predefined value "gnome-terminal"

 - if it's HVM then no values
 - if AppVM name start with "win" then "cmd" or empty.

But as already noted: little hack with gnome-terminal will be enough to
start.

But the problem to find the file whereis right-click menu. As I can
understand, source file somehow "compiled" by Qt... I do not know how to
recompile them, because I'm new to python and know almost nothing about Qt.

[qubes-users] qubes manager add start terminal

2017-04-16 Thread Eva Star
I'm get tired that Qubes Manager till now do NOT have "Start Terminal"
at right click menu of each vm, but only "Run command in VM".

I want to patch it to add "Run terminal". I found that need to
duplicate "Run command" entry, name it "Run Terminal" and predefined
"gnome-terminal" on the input field.

I need to modify action. On the repository I see actions at
mainwindow.ui file. But I can not find it on the disk to add new action!

 :/run-command.png:/run-command.png

Where is mainwindow.ui with actions???

If I will found it I will add new function to process this action by
duplicating action_run_command_in_vm_triggered(self) and predefined
"gnome-terminal" into it.

[qubes-users] Security and dispVM firefox customization

2017-03-31 Thread Eva Star

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/dispvm-customization/

Docs say that we can customize our firefox default startup settings and
homepage. Docs say is safe. There is no any warnings at the doc about that.

But when we starting firefox first time to made ANY customization then
firefox profile created and on it firefox store prefs.js (settings) with
unique IDS for telemetry and ads purposes. On each request to firefox
servers for checking updates, search engines updates etc. firefox will
send this id with all requests.

So, saving this changes on the DispVM template for customization will
identify our firefox copy as exactly the same on each disp vm instance.

Then, if we will use this firefox on ANY dispVM (inherited from private,
public) to open some url. Firefox will run with the same profile and it
will send on the network the same ID generated on the first step of the
template customization.

As a result global advisory will know that the same "private" person and
"public" person use the same firefox. Yes?

It's URGENTLY NOT SECURE! But documentation say simple run firefox and
"change startup settings and homepage". Is it normal?

p.s. Or there is some other way to change firefox settings for every new
created profile without running firefox? I don't know. And documentation
does not show this to user, but send the user by the insecure way with
such advice and recommendations.

I'm about groups and _sub-groups_ for virtual machines (like folders on

It will be comfortable to group them and hide not every day used VMs.

Works every time. The idea is to exclude all service VMs from the

Good advice. Thanks. I have the problem with my ProxyVMs. It's great

I run the bash script to shutdown all VMs, then I go to Alt-F1 -> LogOut

Try this:

Seems I have the same issue! (Maybe) I think it's correlate with CHECKING
UPDATES on dom0 or templates. When Qubes do that check - other VM still not
responsive. I wrote about this at the Xen 4.6.3 thread.

More troubleshooting steps:

1. When problem appears, try in sys-firewall:

qubesdb-read /qubes-iptables-error

This should print last error of firewall reload. I guess it may be about
some DNS resolution failure (if any rule use DNS name instead of IP).
This shouldn't affect all the VMs - only the one for which name
resolution failed, but maybe something is wrong here.

2. Check status and logs of qubes-firewall service:

sudo systemctl status qubes-firewall

Should be "active (running)" and a series of "qubes-firewall[xxx]:
/qubes-iptables" messages. If you see anything else, let me know.

3. Restart qubes-firewall service and see whether it helps:

sudo systemctl restart qubes-firewall

before all calls show me the same:

Then (sorry) I forget about step 3 from instruction and restart my VM.
It helps. And firewall after that show me 15 lines output (vs 14 lines
before)

See the last line! It's show after I shutdown problem VM.

As I'm already wrote I still think the problem with background

/qubes-iptables" messages. If you see anything else, let me know.

3. Restart qubes-firewall service and see whether it helps:

sudo systemctl restart qubes-firewall

Okey, I made offline notes for this.

For KDE, there's kstart. For Xfce4, you'd have to install something, e.g.,
devilspie2.

I believe that some other tool available that work with Xfce4. And it's already
available at dom0. When this user wrote about it then I check and it was there
(at dom0 already installeted)

Oh, really? I would be interested in using that, as well. Please let me know if
you find it. :)

Is that about wmctl or xdotool?

Yes, wmctrl :) thanks :)
It can show all windows `wmctrl 0l`, but how to get id of last window
opened with qvm-run to move it then to the specific desktop?

Looks like very old tool, but hope it work. xdotool not pre-installed
(maybe it's better?)

Exceptions to this routine may emerge out of necessity. For example, it

Some also feel that service VMs like sys-net and sys-firewall should be

them more like router installations and theoretically more secure.

Is there other advantages of using minimal template for sys-net etc. ?
Maybe fast boot? Less memory usage?
What size of minimal template?

R4 Will be fedora-23 based for dom0 right?

This is the plan right now.

Why plans always point to old fedora release? Fedora 25 already
available. Why Qubes dom0 planed to be at fedora-23? (two versions delay)

And what is about fedora-25 template for AppVM? It will be available
when fedora 25 will be released? Is this "one version" delay, because it
take too much time to make new template or it's something security
related, because new fedora can be unstable?

And where is https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-roadmap ?
What is about plans for beta releases of Q4 ?
