I do that with devilspie2 (lua script telling XFCE where I want each window).
However, you might also want to take a look at KDE (search the forum).

Re: [qubes-users] HCL - MS_7D25

2022-06-28 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi Michał,

I am trying to keep the BIOS field as short as possible. Could you explain please why "Dasharo
(coreboot+UEFI) v1.0.0" is an "entirely different version" from "Dasharo v1.0.0"?

I've previously left "Dasharo (coreboot+UEFI) v0.4.0" unchanged in the case of the
MS-7D25 reported by @renehoj. So there is definitely an inconsistency here that needs addressing.
I've shortened BIOS entries for "Heads" to just it and the relevant version number for
the same reason many times.

Why is the "(coreboot+UEFI)" part important / not redundant? Isn't Dasharo an
UEFI implementation on top of coreboot?

In any case, I made the change you requested but would appreciate some
background if you could.

* ping uses ICMP which the firewall will always let through unless you use

sys-firewall
* once you allow UDP port 53 in the firewall settings in sys-firewall DNS
should work

Updates are also not working.

Well, they need DNS. ;-) ... and also Fedora will try to contact some HTTP URLs

If you don't want to allow HTTP in sys-firewall, you can

1. clone it to sys-update
2. set sys-update as updatevm and in the policy for updates
3. allow HTTP for sys-update
4. set "provides networking" to false for sys-update

That means sys-update will be used as update proxy but no other qube can use it
as network (netvm).

2022-02-11 Thread Sven Semmler

Thank you Steffen (aka @TheGardner) for you R4.1 HCL reports, which are online
now:

* [ThinkPad
P50](https://www.qubes-os.org/hcl/#lenovo_thinkpad-p50-20eqs12q35_i7-6820hq_skylake_integrated-graphics-hd-530-quadro-m1000m)
*
[Nitro-PC](https://www.qubes-os.org/hcl/#nitrokey_nitropc_i7-10610u_comet-lake_integrated-graphics-uhd-620)

Your reports gave me plenty to think as they where nearly indistinguishable from your RC2
reports. I also recognized that there are currently 74 reports marked "R4.1"
but (almost) none of them marked with the respective RC number. I will go through them
and reconstruct the RC number by submission date.

Finally it got me thinking that we should require 'clean install' for the
'community-recommended list' due to the cryptsetup2 and other potential
differences.

This was very helpful, Danke schoen! (Sorry for the switch to English, but this
way the audience for the above remarks is bigger).

/Sven

In addition I removed the erroneous HCL entry referring to the ThinkPad model
20nx000gmz as T470s as you suggested. The respective reporter had resubmitted
the report at a later time correctly calling out the machine as T490s.

Funny enough, your own model number 20L8SA2V00 cannot be found by Google at all

Maybe this is an XFCE thing? Have you tried:

a) unchecking the "Honor standard ICCCM focus hint"
b) selecting "Do nothing" for "When a window raises itself:"

See "Focus" in "Window Manager Tweaks" using the XFCE settings app.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: [HCL] ThinkPad T430

2021-09-12 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi Will,

I basically used whatever was the HEAD revision of the Heads project at that
time. That worked reasonably well, but a few issues remained:

-> A weird seemingly random data corruption issue when restoring backups [1],
which I cannot reproduce any longer. I suspect either the VRAM change (see below)
or the switch to the 4.19 kernel (see below) or maybe a combination of both fixed
it.

-> Distorted graphics (looked like random data in the video buffer) for the
first 1-2 seconds when booting. This went away after setting 'gfx_uma_size=224M'
in cmos.default and 'select USE_OPTION_TABLE' and 'select STATIC_OPTION_TABLE' in
Kconfig. I use an external 4K screen and never checked if this is also an issue
without it being connected. You might not need to do this.

-> Random freezes of the system ... this is clearly connected to the 5.4 kernel
and never happens when using the 4.19 kernel. As long as the 4.19 kernel is
supported I feel no pressure to do anything about it and hope that when the day
comes, the newer kernel at that time will not have this issue anymore. There is
some talk about this being connected to the i915 driver.

-> Some warnings about the CPU having issues when booting... that's a bug in
Coreboot you can simply ignore. If you however want to fix it, just apply this fix
[2] manually.

Good luck and let us know how it went!

Re: [qubes-users] How to assign keyboard shortcuts to a VM?

2021-08-11 Thread Sven Semmler

Just to riff on this ...

I made a bash script called qvm-run-in-focused-vm that accepts one command as
parameter and then uses the structure @unman showed to run that command either
in dom0 or the VM that has the focus.

Then I hooked up the following XFCE shortcuts:

Ctrl+Enter  --> qvm-run-in-focused-vm xterm
Ctrl+Shift+Enter--> qvm-run-in-focused-vm nautilus
Ctrl+Shift+W--> qvm-run-in-focused-vm "sudo poweroff"

So much goodness! ;-)

Re: [qubes-users] HCL -Lenovo Thinkpad X230

2021-08-04 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi Cody,

I am working on a list of recommended laptops for Qubes OS R4.0.4 as a
community effort[1]. When reviewing your HCL report I saw you reported
having to apply UEFI fixes when installing R4.0

My own experience with another ThinkPad was similar: I had to apply UEFI
fixes for R4.0 but starting with R4.0.3 those where no longer necessary.

I am hoping you are still using Qubes OS and have meanwhile reinstalled
with R4.0.3 or R4.0.4 and can confirm that UEFI workarounds are no
longer needed. This would be required for this machine to make it on the
list.

Thank you for your consideration & time!

[qubes-users] Short list of laptops/desktops that work well with Qubes OS

2021-07-20 Thread Sven Semmler
*** Please reply either on qubes-users or on the forum[1] but not both.
I'll compile results from both sources into one list. Thank you! ***

In addition to the three certified[2] laptops and the large hardware
compatibility list[3] there is a need for a shorter list of laptops /
desktops that are available to be bought that work well with the current
Qubes OS release.

As a first step, this thread is meant to collect candidates for that
list. If you run a setup that fulfills ALL of the following conditions,
please list it in this thread.

1) Qubes OS R4.0.4 can be installed without workarounds

2) Mayor functionality is available (i.e. graphics, sound) with the
standard Fedora template (i.e. WiFi, Ethernet) without additional
   troubleshooting

3) The performance is acceptable for every day tasks (web incl.
   audio/video, view/edit documents)

4) The computer is readily available to be bought new or used

If things like Bluetooth or suspend are not working "out of the box"
this can be mentioned as a limitation. The part about "readily
available" might vary by region -- that is fine.

Any candidate that fulfills the above conditions and is backed by two or
more reporters makes it on the list. We might repeat this process once a
year or after a major release (like R4.1).

The list will be hosted in the forum and marked as a community effort
independent from and not endorsed by the core team.

Re: [qubes-users] langage change after install Qubes os

2021-07-18 Thread Sven Semmler

Qubes OS dom0 is based on Fedora, so I imagine

sudo qubes-dom0-update system-config-language
sudo system-config-language

and then a reboot. I installed and ran it but haven't actually changed
the language... might be worth a try.

Personally I like that once I setup a Debian qube, it'll run and receive
security updates for many years. I haven't looked up how quickly a
Fedora qube EOLs but it 'feels' like year, maybe 18 months.

It kind of depends what you want from your setup. I've reached a point
where I have plenty of stuff to do and don't want to deal with things
like updates and changing interfaces any more than necessary. Don't get

up, but now that it works I enjoy not having to think about it all the time.

Re: [qubes-users] Disposable sys-net >> wifi login

2021-07-11 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi one7two99,

there is another way.

Your sys-net is a named disposable VM, which is based on an AppVM that
has the "template_for_dispvm" property set true. This AppVM is in turn
based on your fedora-33-minimal clone.

The reason you have an AppVM as template for disposable VMs is the
ability to do customization. So here is what I do:

AppVM:

1) set virt_mode to 'hvm'
2) attach wifi via qvm-pci
3) launch
4) connect to wifi (this will safe the password)
5) shutdown
6) detach wifi
7) set virt_mode to 'pvh'

sys-net:

1) attach the wifi again
2) start

... from now on your sys-net will automatically connect to your Wifi. I
do this for my home wifi and my hotspot.

My guess is that you made necessary changes (e.g. installed something)
in the template and then forgot to shut the template down before testing
the qube based on the template.

In which case that qube would start with the version of the template
before your necessary changes. Now, a day or two passed. You maybe
restarted your PC or some other action of yours shutdown the template
and committed the respective changes.

So this time your VPN qube started with all the bits in the right order
and it worked.

Happened more than once to me ... no way to prove that that's what
happened to you.

Re: [qubes-users] How to assign keyboard shortcuts to a VM?

2021-06-22 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi Michael,

I don't have the time currently to figure this out and send you a
working solution. So instead I'll share things I know:

1) if you inquire the window property "_QUBES_VMNAME" of the active
window, you'll get the name of the qube

2) you should be able to get to this with wmctrl or maybe xdotool

Then write a little bash script in dom0 and hook it up to a shortcut, is
what I think.

Good luck!

Re: [qubes-users] VPN up/down pop up not working?

2021-06-22 Thread Sven Semmler

Hi @stumpy,

I don't know what your goals are exactly, but if you'd like a
debian-minimal based qube to connect to a OpenVPN than this will work
for sure:

Template (cloned from debian-minimal):

apt install qubes-repo-contrib
apt update
apt install qubes-tunnel openvpn qubes-core-agent-networking

Qube (based on above template)

Obviously provide netvm and set provides_network to true. Also
'qvm-service sys-vpn qubes-tunnel on'

Then inside the qube

/usr/lib/qubes/qtunnel-setup --config

and finally copy and rename the .ovpn file provided by your VPN provider
to /rw/config/qtunnel/qtunnel.conf

That's all there is. Restart the qube and be happy.

There are three chips we should talk about to clarify this:

i7-3632QM (listed by Nitrokey, not compatible with Qubes OS)
i7-3740QM (the one I used, NOT listed by Nitrokey)
i7-3840QM (listed by Nitrokey)

The i7-3632QM is that fastest 4 core 35 watt chip Intel makes and the
socket 2 version of it, which you would need for the T430 does not have
Vt-d. Although there is a i7-3632QM version that has it, but that one
can't be used with the T430.

I originally ordered a i7-3632QM because I wanted to stay within the 35
watt design of the T430 and then found out that it lacks Vt-d when I
tried to install Qubes OS. I asked Nitrokey about it and they continued
to tell me that their i7-3632QM would have Vt-d. Then @Plexus made a
post on the Qubes OS Forum regarding this and alerted the Qubes OS Team
and that's when Nitrokey added the warning you saw.

You can however also use 45 watt chips with the T430 if you mod the
cooling (like I've done). In that case the fastest chip is the i7-3840QM
as offered by Nitrokey.

The one I've used is the i7-3740QM which was recommended by @Plexus.
It's a tiny bit less powerful than the i7-3840QM but about half the

Bottom-line: the i7-3740QM has Vt-d and works perfectly with Qubes OS!

Re: [qubes-users] MS Office 365 in Qubes

2021-05-27 Thread Sven Semmler
TLDR: installing O365 using CrossOver is a normal Linux thing and has
nothing Qubes OS specific to it -- whatever works in a "normal" Linux
will work on Qubes OS too; if done with a standard Debian/Fedora qube
all Qubes OS features will work.

experience running CrossOver in Qubes

I don't have any experience running O365 in CrossOver, but have observed
others doing so on "normal" Linux installs (Mint, Ubuntu etc). They
appeared satisfied.

Is it easy to get data in/out to other vms (via copy paste or file
transfer)?

It's a normal debian/fedora qube so all your Qubes features work.
Wine/CrossOver is an emulation layer, which means there is no Windows
clipboard but instead when the respective API gets invoked the contents
lands in your linux clipboard (inside the qube). From there you use the
normal shortcuts to transfer to/from dom0.

Sending/Receiving files works as always. Your Windows C: drive lives
under ~/.wine/drive_c or something similar.

O365 is not and has never been my main concern, but I do have it
installed in a Windows 10 qube. The reason I need Windows has more to do
with proprietary automotive network analyzing tools for which I also
need USB (that doesn't work with CrossOver). So it was never really a
question for me.

My point to the OP was merely that if O365 is the ONLY reason to run
Windows, I'd go and download a free eval copy of CrossOver and try that
first before attempting to install an entire Windows qube. Also because
I suspect it'll be far lighter on resources and cheaper than buying a
Windows license.

I'd recommend the same to you. It won't cost you a thing. Wine is FOSS
and CrossOver is a somewhat more polished commercial version of it with
a free evaluation. The reason I recommend it is that I expect it to work
a bit smoother than the vanilla Wine for the installation. Although the
Wine has also a package called Winetricks ... you could give that a try too.

That one went straight over my head, possibly been away from Germany for
too long (15 years). Sorry for being a bit grumpy. Didn't sleep much
last night.

For others finding this thread later: of course in many cases
LibreOffice is the way to go. It's what I too use 95% of the time. If
you are just dealing with DOC(X)s, chances are you can do everything in
LibreOffice even when collaborating with M$ Office users.

Watching PPT(X) files works great too, but there will be minor format
errors. However, if you have to collaborate with M$ Office users working
on a PPT(X) for example, you will become very unpopular fast if you try
to pull that off using LibreOffice. The results just look too different.

Don't know about spreadsheets much, but I guess if you go all power user
on the formulas there might be surprises too.

Bottom-line: I get why someone might HAVE TO use Office just to not piss
off everyone else they are working with.

The entire idea of Qubes OS is to compartmentalize your information, so
malicious code in one qube cannot damage the rest of your system.
Arguably it makes more sense to run Windows/O365 in Qubes OS then it
does bare metal.

Will Office work without OneDrive?

Of course.

Does that work (e.g. copying text in a non-X11 application to paste
it into some X11 application)?

Yes, in both cases: Windows qube with QWT or using Cross-Over (Win API
emulated in X11)

Does Office/365 support Windows 7?

Yes it does. I have used it this way myself.

Ulrich, I found this particular post of yours remarkably uninformed and
not constructive. It's not like the OP or myself advocate the use of
O365, but there are circumstances where one HAS to use something in the
context of earning money. Everyone outside of academia should be
familiar with that situation.

When using a Windows VM I don't think it really makes a difference. In
both cases you need to be online at install time to get the license and
can then work offline afterwards. In case of 2019 there might be an
option to activate via phone if they haven't killed it already.

When using CrossOver/Wine:

2019 ... 3/5 ... limited functionality [1]
 365 ... 4/5 ... runs well [2]

It's a Windows emulation on top of Linux. So you would install it in
your normal Fedora or Debian AppVM and then run Office that way. That
would make for perfect Qubes integration and lower resource usage.
