btw you can use qubes's AEM as a poor mans secure boot solution.

the question is more that if secureboot supports qubes, rather than the
otherway around. to be supported by secureboot, one would need to buy a very
expensive license from microsoft, something qubes is not able afford atm.

Re: [qubes-users] Question about qubes s hypervisor

2017-10-20 Thread blacklight
What i wonderd the most, if bhyve had these features, would it be a more secure
hypervisor then xen for qubes? Since xen has the advantage of having a broader
audience looking at the code for vurnablities, and bhyve has less lines of code
to have vurnerablities in, i wonder what would be preferable for a secure
hypervisor for qubes.

[qubes-users] Weird login problem

2017-10-04 Thread blacklight
So i recently decided to try subgraph out as a hvm in qubes, first everything
went well, i choose lvm and everything installed fine, i could also boot up the
system, so i thought everything was alright, until i logged in, because after i
log in, the system starts acting weird. It seems like only the bottem half of
the screen displays subgraph, while the upperhalf still shows the background
image of the login screen.

Things i have tried:
Reinstalling
Logging in with different graphical modes.
Launching the vm with the video type changes from xen to cirrus.(this will make
the vm freeze at boot after grub)

Things to note:
I have tried booting the live enviorment, which seems to work perfectly fine,
and doesnt show the issue i have with the installed version.

I hope if anyone here has suggestions of what to do next?

A big thanks to all who read this :)

Greetings, blacklight447

first, with as root, they mean you should type "sudo" in front of all the
commands (without the quotation marks) in the dom0 command line.
second, it depends on your threat level, as it is described: during boot, dom0
is shortly exposed to all the usb controllers, so if one where to be able to
plug in a malicous usb drive during the early boot period, he might be able to
takeover your system, this can be prevented by blacklisting all usb controllers
in dom0. deciding whether this might be a threat in your situation is up to you
and depends entirely on your threat level.

actully dom0 has a file structure, but its just advised to use dom0 for
anything other than management.

so first tell me: where does it exactly hang? the part where it boots up? where

other things you could try: verify that your iso is not corrupt, try another
usb drive, attach your laptop to another screen and see if if it see it

So the notion in the pdf file stating that dom0 is unecrypted is wrong i
understand? also, what about xen, is it located in /boot or is it also
encrypted?

another option could be to download the drivers on another machine, putting
them onto a usb drive, and then installing them on your qubes installtion.

you would want to take a look at this
:https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/full-screen-mode/

i have to warn you though, enableing fullscreen does have some security risks.
copied from the link above:

Why is full screen mode potentially dangerous?
If one allowed one of the VMs to “own” the full screen, e.g. to show a movie on
a full screen, it might not be possible for the user to know if the
applications/VM really “released” the full screen, or if it has started
emulating the whole desktop and is pretending to be the trusted Window Manager,
drawing shapes on the screen that look e.g. like other windows, belonging to
other domains (e.g. to trick the user into entering a secret passphrase into a
window that looks like belonging to some trusted domain).

good luck :)

have you verified the Iso before installing?
your iso could have become corrupt during your download causing a defect
installaton to take place.
