Radeon HD 6450 worked out of the box for me with an intel CPU lacking
integrated graphics (I believe your max resolution will be 1920x1080
with this card, however, if that is an issue for you)

I use an nvidia 650 ti with Qubes and never had issues. Its better then the
intel integrated on another newer board I use. Meaning desktop effects and
smoother performance and colors look better. But thats all subjective I guess.

I suggested getting a board with intel integrated because there is indeed less
chance for incompatibility. A good rule of thumb, in general, is if its newer
then 2 years there is a chance for problems with linux, no matter the hardware.
Most drivers are made for windows first. And linux lags slowly behind with
support. Especially with hardware that is not very popular.

I wonder if mining would be worth it on Qubes since it would eat resources that
could be otherwise allocated. I also wouldn't use my Qubes machine as a server
or for gaming, I consider these also defeating the purpose of security. My
Qubes machine is simply a workstation for daily or sensitive tasks and
transactions.

Not sure what you mean, Styles. Discrete GPU passthrough can be difficult
to set up, but your chances will be better with AMD than nvidia. Go for an
RX 580 or older, I've seen reports of Vega not working. Qubes uses Xen, so
you can broaden your search. Mining on Qubes does seem a bit "wrong", it's
going to hurt the hash rate.

defeats the purpose I would just use integrated.
