[qubes-users] HCL X570 Aorus Extreme v1.1 Ryzen 5950X R4.2-rc5
Hi, I could not post to the forum.qubes-os.org becuse I am a new user, so I am posting here. I could not get R4.1 to work so it forced me to install the rc5. I tried the R4.2 latest kernel but had network errors after updating, which is an issue on GitHub. This is install is with the default kernel. I had installer issues with rc5 that the reboot button on install sometimes does not work. And once on boot I got a CPU core locked errors. I turning of SMT which fixed some installer problems with R4.1 but did not fully fix the installer that hung up polling nvme. It could not load to the install Wizzard. I am unhappy that I can not install the stable version. And wish I could I have not been using it long. I had tried a previous release on a M6800 but due to hardware limits I could not use the current version and the version that worked is no longer supported. I did not use it for long at the time. I am starting over as a new user. Everything seems to work for R4.2 on x570 Aorus Extreme v.1.1 with Ryzen 9 5950X and AMD Radeon 5700XT Graphics. Re: [qubes-users] HCL - ASUS Vivobook X1503ZA
I had to disable both intel VDM and secure boot via UEFI/BIOS to make the installation start. Everything seems to work fine But: 1- wake from suspend is not working even after i followed the documentation's potential fix (screen stays blank until hard reset/shutdown) 2- TPM status is not found in the .yml, not sure if it's due to lack of TPM 2.0 support as i didn't test the TPM manually. I apologize as I have not included the .yml file in the first post so here it's in this post If any further information is needed please inform me Original Message On Aug 21, 2023, 2:02 PM, 'Gandalfen' via qubes-users - qubes-users at googlegroups.com wrote: > --- > layout: > 'hcl' > type: > 'notebook' > hvm: > 'yes' > iommu: > 'yes' > slat: > 'yes' > tpm: > 'unknown' > remap: > 'yes' > brand: | > ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. > model: | > Vivobook_ASUSLaptop X1503ZA_X1503ZA > bios: | > X1503ZA.305 > cpu: | > 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H > cpu-short: | > Intel i7-12700H > chipset: | > Intel Corporation Device [8086:4641] (rev 02) > chipset-short: | > Intel [8086:4641] (rev 02) > gpu: | > Intel Corporation Device [8086:46a6] (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) > > gpu-short: | > Intel Iris Xe Graphics > network: | > MEDIATEK Corp. If it works, power off the VM, remove the device from it and try the other ones in turn. If the machine gets instantly powered off instead then make a note about the broken device. I'll write some step-by-step examples once I got it working a bit more reliably, but for now the next device that is misbehaving sometimes is the network card: 0e:00.0 Network controller: MEDIATEK Corp. MT7922 802.11ax PCI Express Wireless Network Adapter Sometimes it just keeps printing messages that it is waiting after FLR, and the boot doesn't actually finish (or maybe I didn't wait long enough, I gave up after half a minute after it has printed a few retry messages about FLR). Other times it works reliably (it seems to misbehave if I boot into Qubes directly after the machine has been powered off, but seems to work if I first boot into native Fedora and then reboot into Qubes). Is a bus reset of a device in D3hot even valid? I tried plugging a USB device in the controller so it went to D0 and changes reset method to pm on its own, but that didn't help. However I found out that I *can* pass-through 2/4 USB controllers, these ones are safe to pass through: ``` +-02.1-[06-10]00.0-[07-10]--+-00.0-[08]-- | +-0c.0-[0f]00.0 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:43f7] +-08.1-[12]--+-00.0 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raphael [1002:164e] |+-00.3 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:15b6] ``` These ones are NOT safe to pass through, they result in instant power off of the host, followed by a poweron couple of seconds later: ``` +-08.1-[12]--+-00.0 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raphael [1002:164e] |+-00.4 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:15b7] +-08.3-[13]00.0 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device [1022:15b8] ``` This is very weird because 12.03 and 12.04 are quite similar from a topology point of view. I'm not sure what Qubes could do to detect or avoid this situation, but perhaps just hiding the USB controllers that are in D3hot instead of passing them through is the safer option? But even that becomes unsafe if I plug a USB device into 12.04. Anyway I have a workaround now to at least pass some of my USB devices through, and I have my Yubikey working in my 'vault' VM. Best regards, --Edwin > > Although changing the 'reset_method' still doesn't make device pass- > through work: attempting to pass it through still causes a host > reboot > (although more like a poweroff followed by a powerup than a warm > reboot, I tried disabling various options in the BIOS but it still > powers off directly, e.g. the PSP/SMU debug mode appeared promising > but > didn't help). > > Best regards, > --Edwin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. There is a newer BIOS > with > newer AGESA available, I'll have to retry using that. Using > permissive > mode or non-strict PCI reset doesn't help: New BIOS doesn't help, but I found one source of the host reboot: bus reset of the USB3 controller PCI device. /sys/bus/pci/devices/:13:00.0/reset_method has 'bus', and its parent /sys/bus/pci/devices/:00:08.3/reset_method has 'pm'. No FLR on these (which is confirmed by 'lspci' it says FLReset-). Changing 'bus' to 'pm', and performing an unbind from /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd, and then echoing '1' to 'reset' seems to survive and it no longer causes the system to power off. (now I don't know whether the problem is with reseting the device, or resetting the parent's secondary bus, IIUC even if parent device's reset method is pm, secondary bus will still be reset if that is what the child does). Note that all the other USB controller's reset_method is already 'pm'. All but one USB controller is in D3hot (which is expected), the other is D0. Is a bus reset of a device in D3hot even valid? Although changing the 'reset_method' still doesn't make device pass- through work: attempting to pass it through still causes a host reboot (although more like a poweroff followed by a powerup than a warm reboot, I tried disabling various options in the BIOS but it still powers off directly, e.g. the PSP/SMU debug mode appeared promising but didn't help). [qubes-users] HCL report motherboard MSI MEG x670e ACE
Here is my HCL report for the motherboard MSI MEG x670e ACE. Booting even the installer works only with the x2apic=false flag set in both xen and linux lines in grub. Automatic creation of networking related qubes (sys-firewall and sys-net) during first configuration after install crashes the pc. Displayport is working, video seems to be working at least from an initial test. Usb devices work and attach successfully to qubes. Creation of new qubes works. Will have to attempt to manually create networking qubes and report back. I should also note that the motherboard is running a beta bios version due to a problem with vsoc voltage being set too high and not properly capped leading sometimes to frying 7000 series cpus with expo profiles enabled. Here's my review of the cirrus7 nimbini v3, which is largely based on the Intel NUC 12 (NUC12WSHv5). QubesOS with the "kernel latest" option runs great. Most importantly, it is a dream to work on a fanless computer that still runs completely silent under heavy load despite various Qubes running in parallel including several standalone machines. Installation instructions : Please note that I'm using HEADS and not a normal BIOS 1. Use ISO Qubes 2. In the Heads menu, go to USB boot 3. When booting to install, select “Install Qubes OS" 4. Finish installation and boot into OS Remarks The only issue I've encountered is the WiFi killswitch : If you deactivate the wifi/bluetooth before booting, sys-net will have an issue and won't boot. It seems that it's because of Dom0 recheking each time the PCI device. If you re-enable the wifi and reboot the laptop the wifi will work again without problems The important things work: -Wifi -Sound (Even though, you have to manually change from Speaker/headphone librem EC's fault, not QubesOS) -HDMI -USB -Fedora 37 -Debian 11 -Whonix -Gentoo Archlinux BlackArchlinux parrot kali Openbsd debian 12 Not tested: -Bluetooth -Microphone/Camera -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Here's my HCL report. This PC has a buggy wifi card Realtek RTL8821CE. Its native driver crashes sys-net. I removed wifi device from sys-net settings temporarily & downloaded tomaspinho's driver by Ethernet. Cloned debian-11 template for sys-net, set the new template in HVM mode and selected Debian kernel instead of dom0 kernel. After installing new driver, PC works pretty well. But suspend doesn't work. [qubes-users] HCL - Lenovo T14s Gen3 Intel i7-1260P
Hi, Graphical issues Out of the box graphics are problematic. Frames are rendered very slowly. To solve this I installed kernel-latest from the testing repo (5.19.9). This improves performance but leaves us with artifacts. To solve the artefacts issue I created: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-intel.conf with the content mentioned in: https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7507#issuecomment-1153081021 The only area that this does not solve: artefacts while entering the disk encryption passphrase - which is acceptable WiFi WiFi does not work out of the box. I used an USB to ethernet adapter to install kernel-latest-qubes-vm from the testing repository, and WiFi works fine after booting sys-net with kernel version 5.19.9. Suspend does not work The BIOS has two options: - Windows and Linux - S3 Linux with 'S3 Linux' suspend works once but after wakeup the touchpad does no longer work (trackpointer continues to work) and you can no longer shutdown and need a hard reset. Hard reboots when entering disk encryption passphrase On two occasions (out of about 6) I observed a hard reboot while typing the disk encryption passphrase - before pressing enter (while using kernel 5.19.9, this did not happen while on 5.15.x). I'm not sure yet if that helps prevent it reliably but I now press Esc to switch to the console mode for entering the disk encryption passphrase. [qubes-users] HCL - Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 10
Hi, I installed qubes on a brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon, but encountered a lot of issues. 1. The wifi is unavailable. I have no idea why, but I did boot it into an ubuntu live cd once, and the wifi card was found on ubuntu. This gist (https://gist.github.com/holiman/83c76e4cd98d087719773486a77d9112) contains the `lspci` and `lsusb` from both qubes and ubuntu. On qubes, the relevant pci device is 00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 51f0 (rev 01) On ubuntu, it is identified as: 00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-P PCH CNVi WiFi (rev 01) 2. Graphics is a mess. Already at the installer-stage, things were really bad. A drop-down window slide took on the order of seconds. I went through with the installation anyway, and the graphics are really really slow. Dropping down the upper-left menu takes ~1s, first showing a fragmented puzzle, and a bit later filling out the missing bits in the puzzle, and the menu is shown. I have a video, not sure if it's worth posting anywhere. Fwiw, - the bios does not contain any option to toggle between integrated / discrete graphics. - I have not yet tested any of the tricks (i915.enable_psr2_sel_fetch=0) mentioned on https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Fedora/Fedora-on-X1-Carbon-Gen-10/m-p/5135869?page=1. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] HCL Report for: Lenovo T14s AMD Ryzen 7 5850U PRO (20XF004VUS)
Hi Sven, Next to my T480s I recently bought a Lenovo brand new T14s AMD Ryzen 7 5850 PRO 32GB RAM. Full installation of QUBES OS finished within <9 minutes including my slow decision making (I finally do like Debian 11 as the standard and not Fedora). Ultimately I want to run a openSUSE Qube as the standard work cube and a Kali Linux Cube, Windows 11 Cube. For now: Not really tested anything but installed very smoothly and fast. Starting QUBES OS also blazing fast. This blazing fast laptop install didn't really surprise me because of the hardware the 8 cores and 16 lanes in this AMD CPU being complemented with 32GB RAM do their job. I am very curious How this new T14s will operate on QUBES OS Please find attached my HCL report. I found the same issue with the TPM2 as on the T480s. TPM2 is activated but the report says different. Hope this report is useful to other QUBES OS users. Have a great day! Roland -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] HCL - Acer-Predator G3 710
Remarks This machine probably isn't the most secure option since it doesn't seem to have a older PS/2 keyboard connector. Meaning a USB one must be used instead. Secure boot has also been disabled in the BIOS. Tested Graphical display works fine. XFCE4 Desktop works fine. TemplateVMs, Appvms and Dispvms all function properly. Wifi through sys-net connects fine. Full Disk encryption works fine. Audio works fine tested both HDMI output and Headphones. HVMs work fine. sys-usb was created after install and works fine. sys-whonix works fine. Microphone works fine. Screen locking and unlocking from display turning off works fine. Untested BIOS lists TPM interface as being supported though I don't own one to test. Not workingSystem suspend in the XFCE logout menu doesn't seem to boot back up properly just gives a black screen and keyboard and mouse don't seem to connect back up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Re: [qubes-users] HCL report: Schenker Xirios = Clevo P170EM barebone with Qubes-OS 4.1.0
Peter Funk: The performance in Qubes-OS was not as good as in Ubuntu. I had to change "smt=off" to "sched-gran=core smt=on" in order to enable hyper threading. That was first possible with Qubes 4.1.0. In Qubes 4.0.4 hyper threading was disabled. You're probably aware, but Smt=off is the default for security reasons, I believe. -- - don't top post Mailing list etiquette: - trim quoted reply to only relevant portions - when possible, copy and paste text instead of screenshots -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group.
