Yes, i3 works very well with multiple monitors. I use my notebook in three different configurations, standalone, dual (with a large external monitor) and clone (hdmi same as screen). i3 does layout to use the whole screen, partitioning as necessary. In my dual configuration, each screen is managed separately. You can pair screens independently, one on the notebook and one on the external display. You can reconfigure between the two using xrandr.
