First time Qubes OS user here. I am excited to try this awesome OS. Thanks
for all the hard work went into building this OS. To install the OS, I had to
disable secure boot. The installation and post installation experience was
crippling slow. I had to add the kernel option `i915.force_probe=*` based on
the document
https://github.com/Qubes-Community/Contents/blob/eb7685d36850e58b99653746cd8a62833d6ca65b/docs/troubleshooting/intel-igfx-troubleshooting.md.
Unlike the document, the path to grub.cfg is /boot/efi/EFI/qubes in my
system. The laptop is functional after adding the kernel option. I sill find
the typing experience laggy. its not like typing in regular laptop. The
secondary choices in grub menu does not work. I think the configs in secondary
options look for kernel in root folder (like /vmlinuz) but kernel is in /boot
folder in my system.

[qubes-users] HCL - Dell Vostro 3425

2023-02-22 Thread 'moritor' via qubes-users
Here's my HCL report.

This PC has a buggy wifi card Realtek RTL8821CE. Its native driver crashes
sys-net. I removed wifi device from sys-net settings temporarily & downloaded
tomaspinho's driver by Ethernet. Cloned debian-11 template for sys-net, set the
new template in HVM mode and selected Debian kernel instead of dom0 kernel.
After installing new driver, PC works pretty well. But suspend doesn't work.

[qubes-users] HCL - ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (AMD)

2022-12-01 Thread Korhojoa
Running 4.1.1, but had to downgrade kernel to kernel-510, otherwise I kept
getting lockups and random reboots. sys-net has kernel-latest (6.0.2)
because the wireless nic is not supported until 5.16 (I added the name from
lspci into the pasted yml manually).
Sleep doesn't seem to work. LUKS prompt does not show input, but does work.

Running 4.1.1, no wifi issues now. Previous versions of Qubes required removing
the appropriate .pnvm file to get wifi to connect.Audio required
troubleshooting, but now functioning without crackling.Still having issues with
Windows qube audio, but file transfer between Qubes and attaching USB works
fine with it. Built-in microphone still doesn't function even though it'll
attach to any qube without any issue. Minor graphical artifacting during Luks
password entry screen. No other noticeable issues yet.

Graphics Issues With Solutions:

Install using disabled graphics, while following:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/installation-troubleshooting/#not-asking-for-vnc-because-we-dont-have-a-network--x-startup-failed-aborting-installation--pane-is-dead-error-during-installation
Video with the integrated graphics work on the latest Linux kernel supported by
R4.1. On Kernel version 5.16 there were issues with the i915 drivers (of
course), but those went away with 5.18 if I remember correctly. These features
are still working on 6.0.2-2.fc32.

I had an issue where I was having artifact from my Intel GPU after
installation. I found the fix from here:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7507#issuecomment-1153081021

The following is a slimmed down version of what needed to be in the config.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-intel.conf

> Section "OutputClass"
> Identifier "Intel"
> MatchDriver "i915"
> Driver "intel"
> EndSection

PCI(e) Pass-Through Solutions:

PCI(e) pass-through had to be enabled by disabling the raid option so that VMD
works as per
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/6932#issuecomment-1084468446

I have not tested PCI(e) yet, but I plan to soon and write a guide for gaming
potentially.

Graphics Issues W/O Solutions:

The resolution seems to be stuck as 4k with this config. I have tried i3, KDE,
and of course I stuck with Xfce due to the support. Probs a side effect of what
I did to the XOrg conf. I haven't looked into it that much. If you care about
high dpi issues check out the arch Linux wiki on Xfce High-DPI:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/HiDPI#Xfce

Mouse Issues W/O Solution:

There may be an issue with the mouse, however I can not quite tell to be honest
if it is my physical hardware or software limitations. Lastly, there seems to
be an issue with the speakers not working, however, I don't use them.

Installed from QubesOS 4.04 media, with LUKS disk encryption enabled.

- Installer boots cleanly to GUI, no adjustments required.
- The touchpad is unpredictable during the installer. Post installation,
this operates correctly.
- Everything is functional post-installation. Tested Wireless, Internal
Speakers, USB Ports Both Type-A and Type-C.

- Tested with StarPort 12-port USB-C hub - HDMI Outputs, NIC, USB Type-A's
and C, SD Card

NOTE: That can pass-thru SD Card reader (both StarPort and on-board), but
unable to see contents within VM's. Running in-place upgrade from QubesOS

[qubes-users] HCL - Lenovo T14s Gen3 Intel i7-1260P

2022-10-02 Thread qubesfan via qubes-users
Hi,

Graphical issues

Out of the box graphics are problematic. Frames are rendered
very slowly. To solve this I installed kernel-latest from the testing repo
(5.19.9). This improves performance but leaves us with artifacts.
To solve the artefacts issue I created: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-intel.conf
with the content mentioned in:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7507#issuecomment-1153081021

The only area that this does not solve: artefacts while entering the disk
encryption passphrase - which is acceptable

WiFi

WiFi does not work out of the box.
I used an USB to ethernet adapter to install kernel-latest-qubes-vm
from the testing repository, and WiFi works fine after booting sys-net
with kernel version 5.19.9.

Suspend does not work

The BIOS has two options:
- Windows and Linux
- S3 Linux
with 'S3 Linux' suspend works once but after wakeup the touchpad does no
longer work (trackpointer continues to work) and you can no longer
shutdown and need a hard reset.

Hard reboots when entering disk encryption passphrase

On two occasions (out of about 6) I observed a hard reboot while typing
the disk encryption passphrase - before pressing enter (while using kernel
5.19.9, this did not happen while on 5.15.x).
I'm not sure yet if that helps prevent it reliably but I now press Esc to
switch to the console mode for entering the disk encryption passphrase.

Thanks for all your hard work to maintain and improve Qubes OS!

[qubes-users] HCL - Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 10

2022-08-09 Thread Martin Holst Swende

Hi,

I installed qubes on a brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon, but encountered a lot
of issues.

1. The wifi is unavailable. I have no idea why, but I did boot it into
an ubuntu live cd once, and the wifi card was found on ubuntu. This gist
(https://gist.github.com/holiman/83c76e4cd98d087719773486a77d9112)
contains the `lspci` and `lsusb` from both qubes and ubuntu.

On qubes, the relevant pci device is

00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 51f0 (rev 01)

On ubuntu, it is identified as:

00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-P PCH CNVi WiFi
(rev 01)

2. Graphics is a mess. Already at the installer-stage, things were
really bad. A drop-down window slide took on the order of seconds. I
went through with the installation anyway, and the graphics are really
really slow. Dropping down the upper-left menu takes ~1s, first showing
a fragmented puzzle, and a bit later filling out the missing bits in the
puzzle, and the menu is shown. I have a video, not sure if it's worth
posting anywhere.

Fwiw,

- the bios does not contain any option to toggle between integrated /
discrete graphics.

- I have not yet tested any of the tricks (i915.enable_psr2_sel_fetch=0)
mentioned on
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Fedora/Fedora-on-X1-Carbon-Gen-10/m-p/5135869?page=1.

This was marketed as an x330. Works fine with R4.1.1 after I added

templates for sys-net as well.

I removed the remark about the upgraded WiFi as it doesn't describe an issue
but merely the result of a modification. So as a guide to which laptop is
compatible, it's less important. I like to keep the remarks in the table
minimal and on point or link to the thread.

Please feel free to post more details about your experience into this thread,

I've previously left "Dasharo (coreboot+UEFI) v0.4.0" unchanged in the
case of the MS-7D25 reported by @renehoj. So there is definitely an
inconsistency here that needs addressing. I've shortened BIOS entries

Why is the "(coreboot+UEFI)" part important / not redundant? Isn't
Dasharo an UEFI implementation on top of coreboot?

Dasharo isn't only an UEFI implementation. It may come in various other
flavors like (coreboot+SeaBIOS) or (coreboot+heads), etc. More
information about the versioning can be found here:

https://docs.dasharo.com/dev-proc/smbios-rules/#bios-information-type-0

Secondly inconsistency in the BIOS version naming on the HCL site could
introduce confusion or doubts if it is really the same firmware.

In any case, I made the change you requested but would appreciate some
background if you could.

Thank you.

[qubes-users] HCL Report for: Lenovo T14s AMD Ryzen 7 5850U PRO (20XF004VUS)

2022-04-18 Thread Ymec Holding B.V. | ICT Department
Hi Sven,

Next to my T480s I recently bought a Lenovo brand new T14s AMD Ryzen 7 5850
PRO 32GB RAM.

Full installation of QUBES OS finished within <9 minutes including my slow
decision making (I finally do like Debian 11 as the standard and not Fedora).

Ultimately I want to run a openSUSE Qube as the standard work cube and a Kali
Linux Cube, Windows 11 Cube.

For now:
Not really tested anything but installed very smoothly and fast.
Starting QUBES OS also blazing fast.

This blazing fast laptop install didn't really surprise me because of the
hardware the 8 cores and 16 lanes in this AMD CPU being complemented with 32GB
RAM do their job.

I am very curious How this new T14s will operate on QUBES OS

Please find attached my HCL report.

I found the same issue with the TPM2 as on the T480s.
TPM2 is activated but the report says different.

Hope this report is useful to other QUBES OS users.

Have a great day!

Roland

Remarks
This machine probably isn't the most secure option since it doesn't seem to
have a older PS/2 keyboard connector. Meaning a USB one must be used instead.
Secure boot has also been disabled in the BIOS.

Tested
Graphical display works fine.
XFCE4 Desktop works fine.
TemplateVMs, Appvms and Dispvms all function properly.
Wifi through sys-net connects fine.
Full Disk encryption works fine.
Audio works fine tested both HDMI output and Headphones.
HVMs work fine.
sys-usb was created after install and works fine.
sys-whonix works fine.
Microphone works fine.
Screen locking and unlocking from display turning off works fine.

Untested
BIOS lists TPM interface as being supported though I don't own one to test.

Not workingSystem suspend in the XFCE logout menu doesn't seem to boot back up
properly just gives a black screen and keyboard and mouse don't seem to connect
back up.

[qubes-users] HCL - TongFang GM5ZN7W Laptop

2022-03-02 Thread vgc0v89jiy9 via qubes-users
Hello,

Hardware: TongFang GM5ZN7W Laptop
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070
RAM: 2x 32GB 3200Mhz

HVM: AMD-V
IOMMU: AMD IOMMU
SLAT: AMD-V RVI
TPM: V2.0
XEN: 4.14.3

Qubes R4.0.4 and Qubes R4.1.0 will not install

These are the 2 errors I encountered
- mwait-idle: does not run on family 25 model 80
- xenoprof: initialization failed, AMD processor family 25 is not supported

Upon further investigation I found that the Ryzen 5000 series of processors is
not supported by Xen below version 4.15.

Re: [qubes-users] HCL report: Schenker Xirios = Clevo P170EM barebone with Qubes-OS 4.1.0

2022-02-22 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

Peter Funk:

The performance in Qubes-OS was not as good as in Ubuntu. I had to
change "smt=off" to "sched-gran=core smt=on" in order to enable
hyper threading. That was first possible with Qubes 4.1.0. In
Qubes 4.0.4 hyper threading was disabled.

You're probably aware, but Smt=off is the default for security reasons,
I believe.

[qubes-users] HCL - Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3, model 20TK001HUS

2022-02-17 Thread able mylo stone
Original message bounced ... joined qubes-users -> trying again

Subject: HCL - Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3, model 20TK001HUS
To:

TL;DR: After upgrading to 4.1 (inplace upgrade) almost everything
seems resolved with the exception of the onboard microphone (a plug-in
headphone/mic does work).

Thanks!

Qubes is the best.

Mylo

A few notes:

I first installed 4.0.x on this box, and I was having significant issues:

* with the display just being kinda random:ie
* sometimes black screen after bootup [could still switch to
vconsole with Ctrl-Alt-F2]
  - it didn't seem to matter much whether BIOS settings were
"Hybrid" or "Discrete"
* sometimes wouldn't return from screenlock (xscreensaver) ... I
could switch to vconsole and restart lightdm to get the graphics back
[side note: it was very cool that my existing X session was still
alive after logging in]
* external monitor very iffy but would sometimes work with
specific resolutions and refresh rates [HDMI, 4k]

* with suspend ... just didn't work at all

* onboard mic-wouldnt work

[probably some other stuff I'm not remembering]

P.S. The actual original install was done on another box that got
crushed in an accident. It was a System76 Oryx Pro (oryp4). Pretty
much everything worked perfectly on that box, with the exception of
the suspend/resume. I don't think they sell that model anymore.

In a drawn out and slightly harrowing process, I was able to recover
the mvne drive from the crushed oryx and image it onto the lenovo
mvne. This was a bit involved because of encryption, differing disk
sizes and etc. The real process was "install 4.0.x on lenovo: ->
"bluntly rsync -a --delete /old/drive/ /new/drive/ over the top of the
new drive" -> "change disk UUIDs in xen.cfg, fstab, [?crypttab,
etc.??]" ->  -> joy

No, actually I did not touch it at all. I am on a NitroPad X230 and
recently they have provided an updated firmware for Qubes 4.1
(https://docs.nitrokey.com/nitropad/qubes/firmware-update-1.4.html#should-i-update-my-nitropad).
However, I did not upgrade to this new one yet. I am planing to do so
sometime next week.

Hi,

Sound and mic do not work out of the box, but you can make them work.

To make sound and mic work:

   1. dom0: *sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest git tar automake libtool*
   2. Create new cube called "alsa-download", and start a terminal in
   alsa-download vm.
   3. In alsa-download:
  1. *git clone git://git.alsa-project.org/alsa-lib.git
  *
  2. *cd alsa-lib*
  3. *git checkout v1.2.6.1*
  4. *cd ..*
  5. *tar czvf alsa-lib.tgz alsa-lib*
  6. *git git://git.alsa-project.org/alsa-ucm-conf.git
  *
  7. *cd alsa-ucm-conf*
  8. *git checkout v1.2.6.1*
  9. *cd ..*
  10. *tar czvf alsa-ucm.tgz alsa-ucm-conf*
  11.
*wget

https://download-ib01.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/testing/35/Everything/aarch64/Packages/a/alsa-sof-firmware-2.0-2.fc35.noarch.rpm

  *
   4. In dom0:
  1. *qvm-run --pass-io alsa-download 'cat /home/user/alsa-lib.tgz' >
  alsa-lib.tgz*
  2. *qvm-run --pass-io personal 'cat /home/user/alsa-ucm.tgz' >
  alsa-ucm.tgz*
  3. *qvm-run --pass-io personal 'cat
  /home/user/alsa-sof-firmware-2.0-2.fc35.noarch.rpm' >
  alsa-sof-firmware-2.0-2.fc35.noarch.rpm*
  4. *sudo dnf install alsa-sof-firmware-2.0-2.fc35.noarch.rpm*
  5. *tar xzvf alsa-lib.tgz*
  6. *tar xzvf alsa-ucm.tgz*
  7. *cd alsa-lib*
  8. *./gitcompile*
  9. *sudo make install*
  10. *cd ../alsa-ucm-conf*
  11. *cp -r ucm ucm2 /usr/share/alsa*
   5. Restart computer, and enjoy sound and mic. Make sure in dom0 `*uname
   -a*` gives you kernel version >= 5.15.
   6. Make sure every time you lose sound, or mic or both:
   1. double check kernel version in dom0 `*uname -a*` gives you higher
  than or equal 5.15
  2. in dom0:
 1. *cd alsa-lib*
 2. *sudo make install*
 3. *cd ../alsa-ucm-conf*
 4. *cp -r ucm ucm2 /usr/share/alsa*
 5. Make sure *`sudo dnf list --installed|grep alsa-sof` *gives you
version 2.0.2 or higher*. *If not, execute step 3.2, 4.c, 4.d from
 above in that order.

Enjoy sound and mic!
Best regards
Robert

Hello!
Thank you for your hard work in qubes. V4.1 is amazing.
Here is my HCL report.

Out of the box, sleep function restarted the computer on wake up . To make
sleep work, all the pci devices (in sys-usb and sys-net) had to have

I will need to dig in to QUBES OS soon.

[qubes-users] HCL - Dell Precision M4800

2021-12-31 Thread IX4 Svs
I have been using Qubes 4.0.x on this laptop for some time with no major
issues (only sleep/wake doesn't work), so I thought I'd install 4.1-rc3
today.

First impression is that most things work (good resolution to external 49''
monitor, networking, USB mouse, USB camera and microphone) BUT there is
something wrong probably with the display driver that makes the GUI very
sluggish (it takes approx 3 seconds for the XFCE menu to highlight the menu
item over which the mouse pointer is, dragging a window redraws the window
with significant lag, I can type faster than the characters of this email
can be displayed in the browser window...) - which didn't happen with 4.0.4.

If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to troubleshoot this,
I would appreciate it.

Happy new year!

Alex

Qubes version 4.1 for 2 days and no issues so far, keep you posted.

Installing version Qubes release 4.1 (probably also version 4.0) and
correctly enabling the disabled virtualization in a ASRock UEFI (BIOS).
Solution 1: You need to enable 3 settings to have virtualization enabled.
Setting 1: Advanced / CPU configuration / SVM mode --> enabled

Interesting.

Were you able to verify ECC function under Qubes? If so, how?
Documentation I'm finding indicates there is no Xen level support for
ECC, so it would be up to the BIOS to log any memory bit errors.

Suspending works just fine.
Machine comes bundled with a single DIMM2 8 RAM stick, but there are two
slots, making upgrading a possibility.

No built-in wireless controller.

Thank you Jolly for your HCL report, which is now part of this [pull
request](https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-hcl/pull/92) and will be visible on
the website soon!

That looks like an excellent machine too. I have the P52, but lately do
everything on a T430 with Heads and R4.0.4. Plenty of power!

... you guys make me wanna go out and get a X220 just for the fun of it. ;-) It
definitely seems to be one of the most popular Qubes OS machines out there.
