Thanks Xiaohui. I saw your solution a few days ago but only now realize what you're doing. It didn't at the time make sense to me to use the density from R directly. Now, I get it. The solution you get also make sense because the par[2] is ~ 1/par[1] which is what the analytical MLEs imply.
