What I'd dearly love to do, without looping or lapply-ing through t1
and rbinding (too much data for this to finish quickly enough -- this
is about 10% of what I'm eventually going to have to manage), is
convert t1 to one big dataf

important part of articulating your problem. A poorly articulated query
sends a signal to those generous souls who may reply -- it says, amongst
other things, "I'm unlikely to have looked at the documentation." Not a
good start, especially on this list.
