Thanks Greg Matthew. I have multiple polygons (a world map from the
wonderful naturalearthdata.com), so gDifference does exactly what I
needed. If the developers of rgeos are listening - thanks to them for
a seriously awesome package!

I'm happy to say that I think I was able to perform the IDW interpolation.
I was able (thanks to Minti) to import the file in asc format I made in qgis
to use as the grid (newdata). And it worked. Because I know that there are
more people struggeling with IDW, I post hereunder what I did, so
Dunno if this is the place to ask, but I'd appreciate pointers toward
learning about, and channels for asking questions about, analysis of
time series for evaluating model/obs fits. What I mean:
