this sounds like the issues i had.
the below comments where made on 31st of january, and might be helpful.
i also deleted r from my mac and cleaned all .Rhistory and R library
entries according to the R uninstall guide on the CRAN R site - but the
below entry did finally do the job.
I also have this problem on my MacBookAir running OSX El Capitan.

My name is Pat. I have just had the same exact issue occur as mentioned by
Karl Thomaseth (dated 21-8-16). I am having the issue now.
I'm not Terminal savvy, but I assume the sudo find calls are executed at
Terminal---correct?I am running Sierra 10.12.2, R version 3.3.2
