It seems like we found the solution to this latin-1-problem by taking a
curved route. Here is a brief summary of my observations and my

2.2.1 to 2.3.1. I installed several packages (at system level), but

Assuming you are using R.app, tcltk does work on Mac OS 10.4.6 and
R-2.3.1.
1) Is X11 installed/working on your system (in /Applications/Utilities)?
2) Did you install tcltk while installing R.app (check customize
button in
lower left corner during 5th step of install of R)?
