Here's what you can do:
fix(plot.phylo)
Find the line 104 which should be:
xx - seq(0, 2 * pi * (1 - 1/Ntip), 2 * pi/Ntip)
and replace it by:
open.angle - pi/4
xx - seq(0, 2 * pi * (1 - 1/Ntip) - open.angle, length.out = Ntip)
where 'open.angle' is the angle you want
