Putting into root/config/locales works perfectly.
though I added the locale files in my extension to the I18n.load_path list
in myextension_extension.rb:

I18n.load_path += Dir[ File.join(RAILS_ROOT,
'vendor/extensions/bayes/config', 'locales', '*.{yml}') ]
