-some say- its a downgrade not an update...
Me wouldnt do that, dont know if the UE Software is still in development
like SQ or LMS.
There's no benefit to it and you'll end up with a Radio that can't run
on the same server as your other Squeezebox devices.
If you have the itch to upgrade, then install the LMS 7.9 beta server.
It's great.

What's the benefit? Is it better than SQ currently on v7.7.2?
Is there any real differences?
I basically use it for Internet radio and playing my music from my iMac.
Can UE still do this?
I'd like to be able to play direct from my iPhone but not sure if this
can be done anyway.

Internet Radio and playing from the Mac should still work, you'd have to
install a new server software.
You can still not play from the iPhone, though.

squeezebox radio?
You can use iHeartRadio and you don't have to switch music sources (to
MySB) when you shut down your server
