It's a new feature since 1.2: The "main" power button acts on all
devices of a synced group, as does the main volume bar.

That's true. What _I_ do here (again: simple in iPeng on the players
screen) is to shut off all players except the one in the bedroom and
then set a "sleep" timer for the one in the bedroom. Thinking of it, you
don't need the latter since the bedroom one will be the one to do the
alarm anyway.

And if you don't fall asleep to music you could just use that main
"power" button to turn off all devices when you go to bed - this is what
this feature is made for - OK, MY man use is tu turn them all off when I
leave the house but that's similar, isn't it?

I'd find that one the best solution.

Maybe that's the trick. I could start using the power button in place
of the pause button when I want music to stop playing. I'm an iPeng
user, although have never used the master power on/off button.

However that doesn't address what happens when an album plays in its
entirety -- the players would all stay on. And then it'll be a loud
"good morning" throughout the house come 5am the next morning if I don't
remember to turn them off. Maybe I should just stop getting up at
5am...problem solved!

I don't see it this way. When I use the alarm, I often wake up to a
radio station. I then tend to sync in my other Squeezeboxen in the
kitchen and bathroom to keep listening.
So for me at least I would not see that I prefer either use case
(keeping synced or unsync), for me the "power" use case is fine, but the
I do have a nice "master" power button in iPeng :D

pippin;487029 Wrote:

The problem is remembering to do it each night. Same as remembering to
unsync. Either way I'm doing something out of the ordinary. I
generally want all of my players to start playing when I select music,
so the "off" state is rarely used.

I'm not arguing with the technical reasons given in the bug report.
I'm not a software engineer, and it sounds like a pretty big tear-up to
make an alarm sound on only one player in a sync group. However, from
the end-user perspective there is a clear difference between an alarm
and music playback. There are obvious reasons why music sync is wanted,
I struggle to see why anyone would want their alarms sync'd.
(Especially as one starts to accumulate several Squeezeboxen.) Rather
than an intended or desired feature, this seems to be a "that's just how
it works" limitation resulting from the underlying software
architecture.

All that said, I must be in the minority if this isn't a bigger deal in
the forums and on bugzilla. So I'll just keep my old alarm clock and
use the Radio for music playback only.

Leaving players off would work, although that may fail to prevent playback if
you have the settings set up to sync the power state as well. There is just
nothing specific in the alarm that breaks sync, for reasons given in the bug
report.

I can't personally say anything against a decision made for reasons of not
wanting to simply change a feature at the cost of breaking something else.
Ideally, it would be great if the players automatically did exactly what you
want at all times without having to change settings or make more than one
gesture/action. Outside of Staples commercials with the "Easy Button", I don't
really see it happening all that soon :)

What's the problem with turning the players off?
Actually "the point" of this is exactly that they don't start to play
in a synced state.

That's at least one point where I have no "waf" issues with my GF, she
always insists to turn all devices "off" at night, whether it makes a
difference or not :D

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm and Sync?

2009-11-18 Thread ajkidle

Yep, I just tested it. My SBR started playing the alarm sounds. I
leave my 4 players sync'd all the time, and 3 of the 4 are "on" all the
time too. (What's the point of turning the Boom "off"?) So I either
need to remember to unsync the Radio every night, or turn all the other
players off, assuming that suppresses the alarm playback. Both options
are poor and fall far short of wife-acceptance.

Would be nice if there was a sync-alarm flag or some option here that
could be set. Very disappointing and (imho) odd behavior.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm and Sync?

Are you sure they will power up on Alarm?
I have my players synced most of the time and I'm pretty sure only the
one that has the alarm actually plays.
The others probably get the playlist, too, but unless you enable synced
power only one should actually play.
It's the same as pressing play.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm and Sync?

Sync'ed players become essentially one player. An alarmed player needs
to be manually unsync'ed if you wish to have it operate without the
rest.
