It seems to me that since there is no artwork in original stream and
artwork in Tune-in version - Tune-in is is supplying the artwork. LMS
plays other Tunein stream with changing artwork OK (i.e. LMS updates
artworks as it is changed) - so the problem probably lies with Tune-in
and the original stream.

That is pretty much what I am experiencing. As the track info does
change and show correct artwork when you restart it this to me suggests
the artwork is in the stream and it is the Squeezebox failing to update
its display as the stream continues.

>From one perspective this might be appropriate behaviour, that is for
local tracks the artwork is loaded when the track is loaded and when
that track finishes and the next track is loaded then again the artwork
is loaded. Obviously in the case of a continuous radio stream we need
different behaviour which is to continuously monitor for changes in the
stream and load new artwork as needed. The Sqeezebox DOES do this for
the artist and track info so why not for the artwork?

The stream https://media-ssl.musicradio.com/RadioXLondon has embedded
ICY metadata.

The StreamTitle is correct and is updated. StreamUrl which should have
an art URL but is left blank and a custom field "track_info" has Base64
encoded info.

Code:

  icy-description : Radio X London
  icy-genre : Indie/Alternative
  icy-name: Radio X London
  StreamTitle : Stereophonics - Dakota
  StreamUrl :
  track_info :

  UTC : 2020T113719.930

Track info decodes to something like
"statusH@atypeTidMX511733statusC@aStypeTidMX511857statusC@a>typeTidMX512785"
- very custom.

At the moment the Tune in stream only updates the track info if I
restart it and to confuse things it has reverted to the previous track
info after displaying the correct info.

Just for completeness, HLS streams can also have embedded metadata using
different methods. When playing stations which offer multiple formats
(e.g. http /mp3, http/aac and HLS) - the availability of embedded
metadata may vary.

I think some station streams do not have embedded metadata to encourage
listener to use "official" websites or consolidators (e.g. Tune-in) to
display ads as well track metadata etc.

gaps where the Info wasn't updated. Another odd thing is that it shows
the cover art out of sync with the track name when the now playing

In general, aac and mp3 (and even flac) can support icy metadata in the
stream, where the server indicate that every N bytes sent, a potential
metadata update can be found, with the stream artist, title/album and
very rarely the artwork url. Most players don’t support the artwork url,
unfortunately. This icymetadata interval of N bytes is above and
independent of underlying codec.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Best options for Radio streams

2021-11-09 Thread Paul Webster

Many radio stations (I suspect most) do not put cover art (url) in their
streamed metadata.
However, TuneIn (which used to be called RadioTime) has a facility to
provide missing cover art if it is told the track details.
TuneIn has their own API that they make available to broadcasters so
that TuneIn can know what track is playing without them having to "tune
in" to every radio stream.

So - when you play a radio station via LMS using a TuneIn link then
there is a good chance that the cover art that you are seeing has come
from TuneIn.

Occasional cover art for a single station implies a fault somewhere ...
the challenge is to find where in the chain it is broken.

To verify ... go to the TuneIn web site and look at the page on their
site for the radio station and see if the Now Playing information is
updating even when you do not play the station.

Note - TuneIn provides a downgraded service to UK listeners since a
court case a couple of years ago. Search for more info.

RadioFeeds does not have such a capability. So if you are playing a
radio station via a URL that you find there and you see cover art then
it is coming from somewhere else - e.g. the radio station is embedding
the URL to the cover art within their stream.

Radio.net has a similar API to TuneIn but I don't think they make much
use of it - except to show the data on their web site.

The other way to get cover art is for a plugin within LMS to add it.
Radio X (UK) is part of the Global group. If you have the plugin "Global
Player (UK)" then you can have augmented information but, from my quick
test of a few minutes ago, I don't think it provides cover art. However,
the plugin does provide access to podcasts and replays of shows.
