CADIEK VERSUS GALIR Cadiak and pandai reflected both intellectual, skillful, and strategic capabilities. However, among some Minangs, this cadiak and pandai characters - under certain condition, for instance in financially or self-esteem emergency - usually encouraged them to be galie [galir]. Navis (1989), called galir as a creative tricky. On the other hand, Amir (1997:180-181) argued that this galir character was not similar to tricky. Nevertheless, it is very popular among the Minang. This is why, perhaps, other Indonesian ethnics stereotyped them as ´Padang Bengkok´ (´The Crook Padang´ [non-Minangs used to generalise all the Minangs as ´Urang Awak´ though they did not come from Padang]). In fact, however, the majority of the Minangs did not like to be galir.
