Perhaps it is a hand size thing...
I have large hands and find larger diameter bars more comfortable. My
Atlantis has two+ wraps of un-shellaced cotton which I find more
comfortable than the single wrap on other bikes. I also prefer wider
brake lever hoods.

Shellac is not very water resistant. It will whiten/discolor
I'll chime in here as well. I usually re-use old bar tape to pre-wrap the tops
of my bars starting at the brake hoods, working toward the center sleeve. Then
I wrap the whole bar with the new bar tape. I generally use cork, but have
lately been using the fizik tape as the top layer.
