You are correct in your assumption that cassette hubs are incompatible with
freewheels. You can quite easily make a cassette hub a single speed with cog
and spacer kits.

It has a thick rubber shim in it and the derailer was mounted on my Sam,
whatever that ST diameter is. I can measure tonight.
IIRC the cable runs from m the shifter, along the downtube, under the bb up
along the ST to the the top

I have them on more than one bike and will probably put them on another
soon. Weight to me is a moot point. If I were concerned about that I'd lose
a couple pounds of body fat. Easy to set up, look good and maintenance
