Hi guys-
I'm investing in some new tires for my paved path / gravel path rambler and
wanted to get some opinions. My usual ride for the rambler consists of –
surprise, surprise – about 50/50 asphalt and finely packed gravel (with a
few rougher sections). Any suggestions on whether to go with

I say plus 5 as that's about how many times I have thought I had a hub or
other serious problem but it turned out to be the stem making noise in the
rim hole.

Catch and release. I bought these from Isaac a few weeks ago for a San
Marcos build. Well, I bought a Nobilette Rando, sold the San Marcos, and
these things are just too nice to throw on my winter beater High Sierra.
Plus, I want some Swift front panniers for the Nobilette and I need the
cash.

I had this problem. It was a supre supple tire that wasn’t seated all the way
on Synergy rims. Reseating then and carefully making sure they’re fully seated
solved it.

I would second this suggestion, since you are going with a black part's
scheme. A 31.8 opens up a world of black bars, including the Jones Loop
Bar, Jones Bend Bar, Surly Moloko, Surly Sunrise, etc.

I’ve had good luck getting black albatross and black bosco bars from Blue Lug.
You do pay premium for shipping, but the service is great. They seem to carry

Ditto. I had the exact same problem with the rear wheel on one of my bikes

or the hub. Turned out to be the valve stem on a new tube I had installed,
one that was smooth and un-threaded all the way to the rim hole (no
That's 27.2. I believe MIT Atlantis (and all MIT Rivs) is 26.8.

That's going to be very pretty.
I've seen two-bolt Nitto S83s in black but they're hard to find, especially in
26.8. A Thomson with setback will work if you have enough post showing to
accommodate the bend in their posts.

I had this on a front wheel. There was a chirping once per rotation. It
didn't happen in the stand. I was convinced it was the hub. Turned out to
be the valve stem of the tube against the rim. Very subtle.

They only have the 170mm 40/32 in stock. No worries 74mm rings are dirt
cheap, buy a 26 or whatever you want and replace it.
Otherwise, a wide/low prefab crank is just a regular XD
Whoops, this is the RBW list. It might have been the iBOB list with the

Someone just went through something like this either here or on the RBW list. I
think that one turned out to be spoke nipple or the crossover point of two
spokes rubbing.
Check your spoke tension, try a drop of lube on each spoke nipple and see if
you still have the chirp.

Replacing the bearings is part of a hub service. Of course, it may not help the
chirip. Still, less expensive than a new hub by a lot of pennies. Grin. Also,
when you stand and pedal or coast, does it still chirip? If not, it’s not the
hub. Does it speed up as you do, slow down as you do? If
Last stop before hub replacement... :)
So my Saluki developed a distinct rotational chirp about 2 weeks ago that

pedaling and coasting, when I'm on the bike, but doesn't present in the stand.
Before deciding it was the

Nope. The spindle is steel (or rarely, titanium) and the cranks are (usually)
aluminum. The issue with wear on that interface is with cranks that get loose
and wobbly from being mounted too many times..the spindle is the harder piece.

Can one swap out different square taper cranksets on a square taper bb or
better to replace with fresh bb for each new square taper crankset?
