Joel, Fwiw, you could keep the fd and use a Shimano 31.8mm shim with it. Nashbar/Performance bike sell them for $3 plus $1.99 shipping. I've done this and it works great, and won't mark the frame if that's a concern.

Dan, Your frames handling is largely governed by it's design, namely the head angle and trail and the riders perceptivity in general. Dave Moulton has lots of good stuff about bike design and handling. Going back further on your bike from what you say is only to make it feel more odd.
