All I can say is that they (knee savers) are widely used and appreciated by
recumbent riders. A simple solution of they scratch your itch.

Specialized makes some nice stainless steel ones... unfortunately they're
equally expensive at $40. I have them on two bikes (the third has pedals
ordered with custom extra length spindles).
