Liesl, Your experience mimics mine, as I posted on the older thread. Until I started riding upright, I seriously thought I'd have to give up road cycling. Not sure what you mean by brake-cable-mitten space, but just in case, I found the Bosco riding experience to be even better with reverse

The mitten clearance: if my hands are in position just forward of the brake levers, resting almost at the bend, the brake cable passes fairly close to the bar between the first and second bend. Not a problem with bare hands but with thick mittens you've gotta kind of work to slot them in
