Wow, my post gathered some great advice including that from Peter White, I'm honored to say. So, I ordered a Velo Orange Grand Cru from our local bike shop today which will be an upgrade, just like you recommended Michael. The only good thing about repairs is the chance to upgrade, right?

It's too late for me to offer you advice as I see you've placed an order for a VO headset. I did want to comment that I've been pleased with the FSA Duron-X that came installed on the Sam Hillborne frame I purchased last year from Rivendell. David Person On Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 9:06:26 PM

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm honored that Peter White chimed in and learned a lot from his comment. I asked my bike shop to order me a Velo Orange Grand Cru based on several good reviews. I'm looking forward to the upgrade from the generic one it replaces. As Michael suggested, the one

I'm usually in the camp of face and mill the head tube for a headset camp, but I also still have the original Ultegra PJW refers to in my orange Rambouillet, not even close to having any measure of wear. If I had a CK sitting in my tool chest waiting this might be different. Andy Cheatham

+1 on the Chris King/Frame prep requirement. I just had the head tube on a new frame faced in anticipation of a King headset. I've had good luck with the lower-end Cane Creek models as well. On Monday, May 16, 2016 at 10:07:56 AM UTC-5, Tony McG wrote: > > The headset on my Toyo-built Atlantis

The headset on my Toyo-built Atlantis would never stay tight, so the LBS machined the headtube when they tore it down to reapply Frame Saver. It still didn't stay tight, so another LBS added a spacer because the headset apparently ran out of threads on the fork. If I were to replace the

No headset will last if the head tube isn't properly machined. When I was selling Rivendell frames many customers would ask to have a King headset installed. I was selling the Rambouillet, Atlantis and A Homer Hilsens. Early frames shipped with a Tange headset, and later frames with a Shimano

A Tange Levin CDS 26.4 steel headset is $20-25 , or even the Alu version for a bit more, both with super polished races and a sealed mechanism. Classic ! Get them online everywhere . The thing with boutique parts is they often require boutique tools, parts or service, now and or later.

In my non-expert personal experience, Tange headsets last for a very long time. Five years for an improperly installed $30 headset is pretty damn good. Get a new one installed properly and you'll get plenty more. Bob On Monday, May 16, 2016 at 12:06:26 AM UTC-4, Sean on Bike wrote: > > My
