Supposedly, the transcontinental Amtrak routes all have baggage cars with bike racks. This one had a special compartment in one of the cars which was used for intermediate stops like Winona. It was convenient, but frankly using one of their boxes and having them handle it all the way was

Yep, the upper MS valley area is awesome to drive or ride Marc !! The area between La Crosse and Red Wing is what I am most familiar with. There are tons of routes inland. We lived near there and visited often, once you get a open vista to the river and valley it takes the breath away
