Dirty gravel! Beats me how they categorize this stuff, I took that off the
profile provided by the Almanzo 100 website. I categorize hills as
pleasantly rolling, difficult, and painfully steep!

Indeed. Surface matters. I've had paved hills I've had to walk up when

experience. I've walked hills I would otherwise make it up either because
of spinning rear wheel or ruts, roots, rocks I simply am too unskilled to

Marc,
Thoroughly enjoyable write-up--and photos, as well. The first one of that

Good weather, well, that's subjective ;) Looks like it might be a little damp,
but local forecasts are notoriously unreliable.
Sounds like we have maybe 6-7 campsites reserved at Forestville. I expect that
will be enough.

I just got in touch with the park ranger at Forestville. The rule is up to
2 tents per site, up to 6 people per site. So unless we have more than 1-2
person tents, maybe it makes sense to get a few more sites.

I just updated my blog post with the new info about camping. Basically,

If I get the gist of the itinerary, we are going to camp and stay at
Forestville, ride out each day, end up making a loop and return to the
campground. So riding loaded with camping gear from place to place is not
on the agenda if we are camping there, correct.
Marc

That's right Marc. For those of us camping at Forestville, we can leave our
gear there during the day. I'm basing the official start each day in Spring
Valley and Preston, respectively, because those towns have services like
lodging, groceries, etc. This gives us some bonus miles commuting to
Also, starting in the towns allows one-day ralliers to drive in, park
somewhere, and meet us conveniently.

Great! So far I know of three people who reserved sites. Rumor has it that
the park rangers are flexible about the number of small tents, so I think
you can probably count on sharing a site, if you choose. The campground has
a number of non-reservable sites, for those who show up without
