I just returned home from riding down the California coast, Sugino triple
up front and 12-36 in back. I rode the middle ring for most of the flats,
rode the granny gear pretty hard around Big Sur, and was very thankful for
the big ring on slight descents and the glorious 20 miles of hard
not to offend Ian, but any idea what was the tallest gear you used?

As far as I'm concerned, every bike is a single speed , ya' can only
ride one gear at a time after all . No one says ya' gotta shift if ya'
got more , and no one says ya' don't :)
More isn't any less complicated than less, and less is no more simple than
more ! There's only the One .
46x12 on a 26 MTB looks like about 98.7

Aye. So do mediocre ones! Grin.

I'm on my own custom compact double using the same setup, 42/25T. I have a
9-speed rear, Miche custom cassette, designed so all my steps are 5-7
inches, total range is 23-90 inches.

I passed through a 40-26 on the way from Sugino triple to single speed.
It's pretty flat where I live though.

Is that a Microshift R10? What's your biggest cog on the cassette?
I like the way those look but it says on the specs that it only goes to 28.

i've been starting to wonder this same thing. i have the triple xd2 and

Drew, on my Hunqapillar I have removed my front derailer and have a middle
narrow wide 38t chain ring and a 24 granny. I am nearly always in the
middle, and simply view the big chainring as a rock guard. I figure I'll
ride this crank till it is done, then get a doublewide to replace it,
Hi Jim, Yes, R10, - isn't it beautiful? It's working great on a 29 for 40
and 23 gears. I used the Ultegra CS70 up front, and it makes the 17T step
beautifully, perfectly, smoothly, also, though it's rated for 14.
