recently, my daughter said a student at the college where I teach had
expressed concern for my health, having seen me enter a conference 'lugging
my portable oxygen unit'.

I had to read it a couple of times to see the "joke". Bicycle messengers
are used in many large US cities for reasons of speed & efficiency. On any
give day in New York, I'll bet quite a few of those messengers are
delivering multi-million dollar contracts, proposals, lawsuits, reports,
etc.
