Just thought I would mention that Betabrand is having a sale and the
knickers are 30% off. I can send people a link that will get you $15 off
$75 - which is is a little more than the knickers so you need to find
something cheap to add to the cart.
Email me off list of you want a link.

To get even more off that knicker price with betabrand, use their model
citizen page http://www.betabrand.com/modelcitizen and upload a picture
of yourself. 10% without any betabrand clothing on, 20% with. I think it
might stack with the $15 off that Dan mentioned, which I also have
I'd like the $15, if available...

I'd recommend Beta Brand bike to work knickers, which have become my most
worn pants very quickly. Looser than Swrve, tighter than Riv, and made in
San Francisco.
Had never heard of Beta Brand before your post. Decided to check them
out. My work knickers arrived yesterday. Have not tried
Anyone have a line on old corduroy (or even velvet!) mountaineering
knickers? Like Gaston Rebuffat
(http://www.pinterest.com/pin/216102482092532557/) That's what I'd love.
But the old Woolrich ones that I managed to find are sized for
six-footers, and I am wee.

Hey Mike -
As a fellow mesomorph who often has trouble finding clothes that fit, I
recommend Blurr. They call their knickers 3/4 pants. You can find them here:

Why do so few knickers/breeches/three-quarter-pants snug below the knee? I
can't stand wearing them loose. Of course I wear knickers or shorts and not

I find some of the best cycling wear not specified for cycling :)
While not knickers, lightweight nylon pants with drawcord adjustments built
in to the ankles to me are the bees knees ! I have 2 pairs each of Ex
Oficcio Amphi pants(no longer made though), and Outdoor Research Equinox
pants.
It's easy to add velcro or buttons and loops (instead of button holes) to
the ends. I myself prefer them tightly cinched and affect the Tintin look:
cinched and baggy.

Very classy musa knickers (the British listers are snickering about our

Those Beta Brand have nice features at a good price.
How thick are they? I like wearing knickers as they prevent uncomfortable
knee sunburn. The problem I've had with the SF made shorts and tops is
they do not account for the humid heat we get here in the Midwest.

I've had a tough time finding kickers too, that fit well and are not too
baggy. The Riv's are too baggy and don't stretch, the Swerves too tight
for my mesomorphic frame. My favorites are the Portland Cyclewear ones (
no longer made) and the Zoic Reign's. Comfortable through the hips and

I ride in Chicago, but haven't gotten through a whole hot, humid midwest
summer with them yet. Beta Brand does have a good return policy that should
work for you if you get them and realize that they're not what you wanted -

For summer wear I like the Castelli knickers. Although synthetic, they are
lightweight, have a decent bib, and a good chamois.
For fall/winter wear, I love the Ibex El Fito 3/4 wool knickers (either with or
without bibs). I live in those from October - March. Did I mention I love
these?

I have a pair of twin 6 size 33 if your interested and in the Bay Area you can
have them. I think I wore them once. The knicker thing just wasn't for me. If
they're a little big just get them taken in, I think they were around $100 new.
I would rather see someone use them.

Good luck! Baggy beats the heck out of too snug, and Riv is the only place
I've found (short of making our own, which I haven't asked my wife to yet)
that is baggy enough and too even a bit more than I'd like.
We added 6 of fabric to one company's knickers to make them work and they
